Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav questioned the management of Ram Temple donations as the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust held a meeting to decide its first full-time CEO. 

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Wednesday raised concerns over the management of Ram Temple funds, saying he hoped there would be no theft of “Ram Dhan” as the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust met to discuss the appointment of its first full-time Chief Executive Officer (CEO)

The Trust meeting in Ayodhya was convened to consider three shortlisted candidates recommended by a search committee for the CEO position. The appointment is expected to bring a more structured administrative framework for the management of the temple complex and related operations.

Akhilesh raises questions over temple funds

Reacting to the Trust meeting, Akhilesh Yadav said that the appointment process should ensure transparency and accountability in the management of donations received for the temple.

He referred to earlier allegations regarding irregularities in temple donations and said that the faith of devotees must be protected. The allegations have been a subject of political debate, with the Trust and other parties responding to claims made by opposition leaders. 

Trust moves ahead with CEO selection

The Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust has been working on selecting its first CEO to strengthen administrative operations.

A search committee reviewed applications and shortlisted candidates before submitting recommendations to the Trust. The meeting agenda included consideration of the shortlisted names as well as procedures and responsibilities associated with the CEO post. 

The CEO will be responsible for helping manage the growing administrative requirements of the temple, including operational planning and coordination.

Political debate continues

The issue has triggered a political exchange between opposition leaders and supporters of the temple administration.

While Akhilesh Yadav has demanded transparency over donations and management, the Trust has maintained that temple-related affairs are being handled through established procedures. 

The appointment of the first CEO is being seen as an important administrative step as the Ram temple complex continues to expand and attract devotees.

 The Samajwadi Party (SP) Madhya Pradesh unit has sharply criticised the state government's decision to procure only 60 per cent of farmers' moong crop at the Minimum Support Price (MSP), alleging that the policy is anti-farmer. The party has also put forward an unusual proposal, demanding that legislators, Members of Parliament and ministers should receive only 60 per cent of their salaries if the government is unwilling to purchase farmers' entire produce.

Addressing the issue, SP state president Dr Manoj Yadav questioned what he termed a "double standard" in the government's approach towards farmers and elected representatives.

'Leaders Should Also Receive Only 60% Salary'

Dr Yadav said farmers cultivate their crops with full effort over several months, but the government has decided to procure only a part of the produce at MSP while forcing them to sell the remaining quantity in the open market at lower prices.

"If the government is not prepared to purchase 100 per cent of the farmers' moong crop, then legislators, MPs and ministers should also receive only 60 per cent of their salaries," he said, adding that public representatives should share the burden if farmers are denied the full benefit of government procurement.

He argued that leaders cannot justify drawing full salaries funded by taxpayers while farmers are unable to sell their complete produce at the assured support price.

Attack on Union Agriculture Minister

The Samajwadi Party also targeted Union Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, stating that both the Centre and the Madhya Pradesh government are led by the BJP, yet farmers are still compelled to protest for their demands.

The party referred to the recent farmers' march from Narmadapuram to Bhopal, claiming that despite a "double-engine government", cultivators continue to struggle for assured procurement of their produce.

SP alleged that the government's decision to increase procurement from 25 per cent to 60 per cent came only after sustained protests by farmers and maintained that the revised limit remains inadequate.

The party demanded procurement of 100 per cent moong at an MSP of ₹10,000 per quintal, arguing that anything less would fail to provide meaningful relief to growers.

Food Security and Fertiliser Issues Raised

Apart from the procurement issue, the Samajwadi Party highlighted what it described as serious shortcomings in the state's fertiliser distribution system.

The party alleged that the existing e-token mechanism has forced farmers to travel long distances to obtain fertilisers while government outlets remain understocked. It further claimed that fertilisers are being sold at inflated prices in the open market, resulting in hardship for cultivators.

Demand for Inquiry Into Fortified Rice Distribution

The party also sought a high-level judicial inquiry into allegations concerning the diversion of fortified rice reportedly meant for malnourished women and children.

According to SP, rice valued at approximately ₹1,160 crore, intended for welfare programmes in several districts including Balaghat, was allegedly diverted for ethanol production. The party demanded an independent investigation into the matter.

Ken-Betwa Project Rehabilitation

The Samajwadi Party further raised concerns over the rehabilitation of families affected by the Ken-Betwa river linking project.

It urged the government to provide ₹25 lakh compensation along with three acres of land to each displaced family, particularly those belonging to tribal communities in Chhatarpur and Panna districts.

Key Demands

The Samajwadi Party has demanded:

• Procurement of 100 per cent moong at ₹10,000 per quintal MSP.

• Reduction of legislators', MPs' and ministers' salaries to 60 per cent if complete procurement is not ensured.

• Immediate action against fertiliser black marketing and transparent distribution.

• A judicial inquiry into the alleged fortified rice diversion.

• Enhanced compensation and land allocation for families displaced by the Ken-Betwa project.

The state government has not yet issued an official response to the party's latest demands.

According to party sources, the survey evaluates sitting MLAs' performance, their ground-level support base, and their prospects of winning, assessed across three distinct levels. The party's sharpest focus is on the 61 seats it has lost consistently over multiple election cycles. Feedback is being gathered from the RSS, party workers and the general public before the BJP begins finalising its next electoral strategy and candidate selection on these seats.

The 61 seats break down across three regions. In eastern Uttar Pradesh, 22 seats across districts including Azamgarh, Mau, Jaunpur, Ghazipur and Mirzapur have gone against the BJP for three consecutive elections. In western Uttar Pradesh, 13 Muslim-Dalit-majority seats across Saharanpur, Moradabad and Bijnor districts have similarly eluded the party. And across Awadh and central Uttar Pradesh, 26 seats spanning Rae Bareli, Sultanpur, Pratapgarh, Barabanki, Unnao, Hardoi, Fatehpur and Ambedkar Nagar districts round out the list. Of these 61 seats, 27 involve a direct contest with the Samajwadi Party, which has consistently won them.

The survey isn't limited to BJP's own seats — it also covers constituencies held by its alliance partners, including Nishad Party, Apna Dal, Rashtriya Lok Dal and the Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP).

Alongside the survey, the party has also been testing its own workers' knowledge and organisational readiness. Between July 6 and 28, the BJP conducted a nationwide online examination for party workers and office-bearers, covering the history and working culture of both the RSS and BJP, administered through the party's Saral app. Office-bearers from all six of the party's front organisations took part. Of 5.34 lakh workers from Uttar Pradesh who appeared for the test, 4.82 lakh passed — a success rate exceeding 90%, which the state reportedly recorded as the highest in the country.

Taken together, the survey and the internal examination point to a BJP state unit treating its 2027 preparation as a long-game, ground-up exercise — mapping precisely where it's weak, testing whether its own workers are organisationally sharp enough to close those gaps, and doing both well over a year before voters actually go to the polls.

Writing on X, Rajbhar asked Akhilesh Yadav a pointed question: if Pradhan's caste had been Yadav instead of Kurmi, would he have still demanded the minister's resignation, or would he have defended him instead? Rajbhar said he awaited a response.

The question follows social media claims circulating even before Rajbhar's post, alleging that opposition parties — particularly the Samajwadi Party and Congress — were targeting Pradhan specifically because he belongs to the Kurmi community. Some of these posts went further, suggesting the Kurmi community would respond to what they characterised as an insult through the ballot box in upcoming elections. Rajbhar's intervention has since intensified the political debate around the issue.

Pradhan resigned as Union Education Minister last Saturday, following weeks of student protests at Jantar Mantar, Sonam Wangchuk's hunger strike, and a movement that originated with the Cockroach Janta Party's social media campaign. His resignation marked what's being described as the protest movement's first major political victory — a campaign that started as an online jibe and grew into a nationwide student movement, now considered a notable moment in the history of Indian student politics.

Neither Akhilesh Yadav nor the Samajwadi Party had responded to Rajbhar's question at the time of publishing.

The Monsoon Session of Parliament witnessed repeated disruptions on Wednesday as opposition parties protested the police action against supporters of the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) during the 20 July Parliament march. Opposition MPs, dressed in black as a mark of protest, also intensified their demand for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the alleged NEET paper leak issue.

The uproar led to multiple adjournments in both Houses of Parliament, with proceedings in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha being repeatedly suspended amid continuous sloganeering by opposition members.

Akhilesh Yadav Questions Police Action

Speaking in the Lok Sabha, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav questioned the conduct of security personnel during the protests and asked who had authorised the police to allegedly tear the clothes of women demonstrators.

His remarks came as opposition parties accused law enforcement agencies of using excessive force during the crackdown on protesters participating in the Parliament march on 20 July.

The allegations have become one of the key issues driving the opposition's protest during the ongoing Monsoon Session.

Opposition Renews Demand for Minister's Resignation

Congress MP K.C. Venugopal reiterated that the opposition's primary demand remains the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

Opposition leaders have linked their demand to the alleged NEET paper leak and have also raised concerns over the handling of student protests that followed the controversy.

The issue has united several opposition parties, which have been coordinating their protests inside and outside Parliament.

Government Offers Discussion

Responding to the opposition's allegations, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said the government has been ready to discuss the alleged NEET paper leak issue for the past three days.

He maintained that the government was open to a structured debate in Parliament and urged opposition members to allow the House to function.

Despite the government's offer, the protests continued, resulting in repeated disruptions.

Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha Adjourned

The Lok Sabha was adjourned just one minute after it convened at 11:00 am due to continuous sloganeering by opposition members.

When the House reconvened at 12:00 noon, proceedings lasted only about five minutes before another adjournment until 2:00 pm.

The Rajya Sabha also witnessed similar disruptions and was adjourned until the afternoon amid the ongoing protests.

Opposition MPs Wear Black

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and several opposition MPs arrived in Parliament wearing black attire as a symbolic protest against the police action and the government's handling of the controversy.

The demonstration followed Tuesday's protests outside the Prime Minister's residence, where opposition leaders raised slogans demanding the resignation of both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

According to reports, Rahul Gandhi was later detained during the protest and released the same night.

Political Tensions Continue

The opposition has announced that it will continue raising the issues of the alleged NEET paper leak, police action against protesters, and accountability in Parliament.

Meanwhile, the government has maintained that it is prepared for a discussion but has urged opposition parties to allow normal parliamentary business to continue.

With both sides holding firm to their positions, the Monsoon Session is expected to witness further political confrontation in the coming days.

Both parties have begun sharpening their social outreach strategies, signalling that Dalit voters could play a decisive role in determining the electoral outcome in India's most politically significant state. Political observers believe the contest is no longer limited to traditional caste equations, as every major party is attempting to expand its social base ahead of the election.

The BJP is focusing on consolidating its support among Dalits alongside non-Yadav Other Backward Classes (OBCs), a strategy that has contributed to its electoral success in recent years. The party has also undertaken organisational changes in Uttar Pradesh aimed at balancing caste representation within its leadership structure before the election campaign gathers momentum.

On the other hand, the Samajwadi Party is attempting to strengthen its PDA (Pichhda, Dalit, Alpsankhyak) strategy under party chief Akhilesh Yadav. As part of that effort, the SP is planning to field a significantly higher number of Dalit candidates in the 2027 Assembly election, including candidates in several general constituencies, in an effort to broaden its support beyond its traditional Muslim-Yadav voter base.

Political analysts say the contest has become more competitive because the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), which has historically been the principal political force representing Dalit voters in Uttar Pradesh, is facing renewed challenges in retaining its traditional support base. This has encouraged rival parties to step up their outreach to Scheduled Caste communities through organisational changes, public campaigns and candidate selection strategies.

The BJP continues to project governance, welfare schemes and representation of marginalised communities as central themes of its campaign, while the Samajwadi Party is seeking to build a broader social coalition through its PDA narrative. The differing approaches highlight how both parties are attempting to appeal to voters whose support could influence dozens of Assembly constituencies across the state.

Dalit voters account for a substantial share of Uttar Pradesh's electorate and have traditionally played a decisive role in state elections. Their voting pattern has undergone notable changes over the past decade, making them one of the most closely watched electoral groups as political parties recalibrate their strategies.

The Congress has also stepped up its efforts by appointing Dalit leader Rajendra Pal Gautam as its Uttar Pradesh in-charge, while reaffirming support for the PDA political framework in coordination with its alliance strategy. The move reflects the wider competition among political parties to increase their presence among Dalit communities ahead of the election.

Although formal campaigning is yet to begin, organisational restructuring, candidate planning and community outreach programmes indicate that preparations are already well underway.

With the Assembly election expected next year, political observers believe the fight for Dalit votes will remain one of the most significant factors shaping Uttar Pradesh's electoral landscape. As parties continue refining their caste and social equations, the coming months are likely to witness intensified grassroots mobilisation across the state.

Speaking in Bijnor, Adityanath said that before 2017, chief ministers avoided visiting the district, treating it as inauspicious. He turned that framing around, arguing that it was those earlier leaders who were themselves the inauspicious ones, since a place blessed by the presence of the Ganga and linked to Lord Krishna's visit to Mahatma Vidur's home could never truly deserve such a reputation. He said Bijnor had since built a new identity around development, crediting what he called the "Double Engine Government" with transforming Uttar Pradesh from a long-struggling "BIMARU" state into one of India's leading ones.

He then turned sharply toward his political rivals, saying that those who wanted Bijnor to remain riot-prone, crime-ridden and under mafia control were the same people who, in his words, "believe in division and admire Jinnah." He summed up the contrast with a line that's since become the headline of his visit: "We do not like Jinnah; we like sugarcane" — pointing to his government's record of raising sugarcane prices and clearing the state of what he described as crime, riots, curfews and mafia influence as evidence of that priority.

The remarks echo a nearly identical attack he made a day earlier during a visit to Shamli, where he accused "worshippers of Jinnah" of deliberately altering the region's demography, pointing to past migration from Kairana and Kandhla as evidence. In Bijnor, he extended the same warning to local residents, cautioning that followers of what he called Jinnah's ideology would divide people along regional and caste lines whenever given the opportunity, and would resort to corruption in development work if allowed back into power.

On the sugarcane sector specifically, Adityanath recalled asking Suresh Rana, when he first took charge as sugarcane development minister in 2017, whether the state's mills would simply continue being sold off — to which Rana had reportedly assured him the mills would instead be reclaimed and restarted. The Chief Minister said 122 sugar mills are now operational, with farmers being paid on time and sugarcane prices at ₹400 per quintal, and cited Uttar Pradesh's position as the country's top producer of sugarcane, sugar and ethanol as proof of the sector's turnaround.

The visit was tied to the inauguration and foundation-laying of 89 development projects worth more than ₹581 crore across the Shamli, Thana Bhawan and Kairana assembly constituencies, continuing a pattern of framing infrastructure announcements alongside sharp political messaging as Uttar Pradesh heads toward its 2027 Assembly elections.

Neither the Samajwadi Party nor the Congress had issued a public response to Adityanath's remarks at the time of publishing.

The demand for 27 per cent reservation for Other Backward Classes (OBCs) is set to intensify in Madhya Pradesh, with the OBC Mahasabha announcing a march to the State Assembly in Bhopal on July 20. The proposed protest has received support from the Congress and the Samajwadi Party (SP), adding political backing to the agitation.

The protest aims to press the state government to implement the full 27 per cent OBC reservation and remove the legal hold on 13 per cent of the quota, which has remained stalled due to ongoing litigation.

Congress Backs Protest

Former Agriculture Minister and Congress MLA from Kasrawad, Sachin Yadav, has publicly supported the Assembly gherao through a written appeal.

He urged members of the OBC community across Madhya Pradesh to participate in large numbers and make the protest a success. Yadav said the movement seeks the full implementation of the 27 per cent reservation policy and the removal of the hold on the remaining 13 per cent reservation.

He also criticised the BJP government, alleging that its policies have been against the interests of the OBC community.

SP Demands 52% Reservation

The Samajwadi Party has also extended support to the July 20 protest.

State SP president Dr Manoj Yadav said his party stands with the OBC Mahasabha and reiterated its long-standing demand for 52 per cent reservation for the OBC community in Madhya Pradesh based on its population share.

The party has called for reservation benefits to be aligned with the demographic representation of backward classes in the state.

Focus on Pending 13% Quota

The central issue behind the protest is the implementation of the pending 13 per cent reservation, which remains on hold following legal proceedings. Although the state government had announced 27 per cent reservation for OBCs, only a portion of it has been implemented because of court-related restrictions.

The OBC Mahasabha says the July 20 Assembly march is intended to put pressure on the government to take steps towards resolving the issue and ensuring the promised reservation is fully implemented.

Political Significance

The protest comes at a time when reservation and social justice issues continue to feature prominently in Madhya Pradesh's political discourse. With support from opposition parties, the demonstration is expected to draw participants from different districts of the state.

The state government has not yet issued an official response regarding the planned protest or the demands raised by the OBC Mahasabha.

Adityanath arrived by helicopter around noon, heading first to inspect the local PAC camp before proceeding to the main event at Vijay Singh Pathik Degree College, where he inaugurated and laid the foundation for development projects worth ₹589 crore across the district. Addressing the gathering, he said that the resolve he had made — to send mafia elements either to jail or to hell — felt validated every time he visited the Shamli-Kairana belt.

The Chief Minister used much of his speech to draw a contrast between the district's present and its past. He said that until roughly a decade ago, Shamli was seen as a symbol of fear, alleging that a deliberate effort had been made through Kairana and Kandhla to alter the area's demographics and drive people out. He said women were once afraid to step out of their homes, that killings had taken place in the open, and that law and order had collapsed entirely — a situation he said had since reversed, with criminals no longer holding the same sway over the region.

On religious observances, Adityanath said that raising the slogan "Jai Shri Ram" used to draw lathis and bullets, and that celebrations like Janmashtami and the Kanwar Yatra were once obstructed altogether — a situation he contrasted with the present, where he said authorities now stand in service of these events instead. He appealed directly to Kanwariyas, describing them as descendants of Lord Ram and devotees of Lord Shiva, urging them not to create disturbances over minor issues during the yatra. He also cautioned that if any "wrong elements" tried to disrupt the pilgrimage, they should be identified and removed from the gathering.

Turning to the opposition, Adityanath described the Congress and Samajwadi Party as "worshippers of Jinnah," arguing that residents once went without basic amenities like reliable electricity while development stalled under previous governments. He said Shamli was now progressing rapidly, pointing to the district's position at the meeting point of the Delhi-Dehradun, Shamli-Ambala and Shamli-Gorakhpur expressways, and said the district was increasingly being developed in line with its emerging status as part of the National Capital Region.

Neither the Congress nor the Samajwadi Party had issued a public response to Adityanath's remarks at the time of publishing.

The BJP has continued to project Hindutva as one of the central pillars of its political campaign. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and other senior party leaders have accused the opposition of adopting what they describe as "soft Hindutva" only because of the approaching elections. BJP leaders argue that the opposition's recent emphasis on Sanatan traditions lacks consistency and is driven by electoral considerations rather than ideology.

At the same time, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav has noticeably altered his political messaging in recent months. While continuing to champion the party's PDA (Pichhda, Dalit and Alpsankhyak) social coalition, he has increasingly linked socialism with Sanatan values. Speaking at public events, Akhilesh has asserted that "Samajwad" represents the true spirit of Sanatan by promoting equality and welfare for every section of society.

The Samajwadi Party's outreach has also included visits to religious figures and temples, with the party preparing to launch a statewide PDA Rath Yatra from a prominent religious location later this year. Political observers view these moves as an attempt to expand the party's support base beyond its traditional caste coalition while countering the BJP's dominance over religious narratives.

The Congress has adopted a similar approach in Uttar Pradesh. State Congress president Ajay Rai has repeatedly highlighted his religious identity and has participated in temple visits and public religious events. Party leaders believe that emphasising Sanatan traditions could help counter the BJP's allegations that the opposition is anti-Hindu while allowing the Congress to reconnect with sections of the electorate that have drifted away in recent elections.

Political analysts believe the shift reflects a broader transformation in Uttar Pradesh's electoral landscape since 2014. With the BJP consistently consolidating a large section of Hindu voters, opposition parties appear to be balancing their traditional social justice and secular narratives with greater emphasis on religious and cultural symbolism.

The BJP, however, remains unconvinced by the opposition's strategy. Party leaders continue to accuse both the SP and Congress of pursuing "appeasement politics" in the past while adopting religious symbolism only in the run-up to elections. The party has intensified its criticism through public campaigns and protests, arguing that its commitment to Hindutva has remained consistent over the years.

As political activity gathers pace ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections, Sanatan politics is expected to remain a key campaign theme alongside governance, economic development and social welfare. Whether the opposition's evolving strategy succeeds in broadening its electoral appeal or the BJP retains its advantage on the Hindutva plank is likely to become one of the defining questions of the upcoming election battle.

According to party insiders, the proposed Rath Yatra will travel across different regions of Uttar Pradesh, focusing on strengthening the Samajwadi Party's support base among the PDA (Pichhda, Dalit and Alpsankhyak) social coalition while also reaching out to other sections of society ahead of the elections. The route and schedule are expected to be finalised in the coming weeks.

The decision to begin the yatra from a religious location is being viewed as part of Akhilesh Yadav's evolving political strategy. In recent weeks, the SP chief has made several appearances linked to religious and cultural issues, including his meeting with Shankaracharya Swami Avimukteshwaranand and his remarks on Ayodhya and Sanatan traditions. Political observers believe these moves reflect an attempt to counter the BJP's dominance over religious narratives while retaining the party's traditional social justice agenda.

The proposed campaign is expected to highlight issues such as unemployment, inflation, farmers' concerns, education and law and order. At the same time, party leaders are likely to use the yatra to mobilise workers at the grassroots level and prepare district units for the upcoming Assembly election battle.

Although the Samajwadi Party has not officially announced the exact starting point, sources suggest that a major religious centre is under consideration. The choice is expected to carry symbolic significance and could become one of the key talking points of the party's campaign launch.

The Rath Yatra will also provide Akhilesh Yadav with an opportunity to interact directly with voters across the state through public meetings and roadshows. Similar statewide campaigns have previously formed an important part of the Samajwadi Party's election strategy, helping the leadership connect with local workers and communicate the party's agenda before polling.

With less than a year remaining before Uttar Pradesh heads to the polls, political parties have begun intensifying their preparations. While the BJP is expected to focus on governance and welfare initiatives, the Samajwadi Party is positioning its PDA campaign as the centrepiece of its election strategy.

The launch of the proposed Rath Yatra is expected to mark the beginning of an aggressive campaign season in Uttar Pradesh, with political activity likely to intensify across the state in the months leading up to the Assembly elections.

The BJP's push, dubbed internally as a Bengal-style micro-management model, centres on booth-level control across all 403 constituencies. At a state executive meeting in Lucknow chaired by state president Pankaj Chaudhary and state general secretary (organisation) Dharampal Singh, the party directed leaders to compile booth-wise lists from its roughly 2.5 crore primary members, building on mandal-wise lists already prepared earlier. The plan involves appointing nearly 1.76 lakh "booth palaks," or booth caretakers, tasked with maintaining contact with voters, coordinating with local committees and monitoring political trends at the ground level. The BJP intends to review all 1,62,459 Assembly booths across the state — including over 27,000 "shakti kendras" spanning nearly 1,900 mandals — within the coming month, an exercise that will also cover close to 14,000 new booths created after the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.

The structure leans on a few specific mechanisms. Under the "panna pramukh" system, individual workers are assigned responsibility for 30 to 35 voters listed on a single page of the electoral roll, staying in regular contact to ensure they turn out on polling day. Booths are also being sorted into strong, competitive and weak categories, with additional manpower directed toward the more contested ones. Chaudhary has described booth-level workers as the party's "real warriors," and leaders have also been told to prepare lists of government welfare scheme beneficiaries as an additional outreach channel. Party discussions have specifically flagged the need to counter the Samajwadi Party's PDA formula — its strategy of consolidating backward classes, Dalits and minorities into a unified voter base.

The Samajwadi Party, for its part, appears to be running its own quiet parallel operation. According to party sources, SP has already internally finalised candidates for more than half of Uttar Pradesh's 403 seats, well ahead of any formal announcement, and has directed those selected contenders to begin strengthening booth networks and consolidating local caste and social equations in their constituencies. The party has reportedly prioritised seats where sitting legislators remain strong, where it narrowly lost in 2022, and where internal surveys point to winnable candidates.

The early positioning comes as SP and Congress, both part of the INDIA bloc, are expected to begin seat-sharing negotiations for 2027. Following the alliance's stronger-than-expected showing in Uttar Pradesh during the 2024 Lok Sabha election, Congress is believed to be preparing a more assertive claim on Assembly seats than in previous cycles, reportedly seeking strong candidates across 100 to 125 constituencies while keeping its organisational units active statewide as a contingency. SP leadership, buoyed by its own improved position after 2024, believes it has grounds to claim the overwhelming majority of seats within any alliance arrangement.

With the BJP betting on grassroots saturation and the SP betting on early candidate clarity and social coalition-building, Uttar Pradesh's 403-seat contest — India's largest assembly election by voter count — is shaping up as a battle that both major camps are choosing to fight years, not months, in advance.
