Chennai Super Kings have suffered another major setback in their IPL 2026 campaign as England fast bowler Jamie Overton has returned home due to a right thigh injury. The franchise confirmed the development on Wednesday night through its official social media platforms, raising fresh concerns over the team’s growing injury list at a crucial stage of the tournament.

Although Chennai Super Kings did not provide an exact timeline for Overton’s recovery, sources within the team suggest that the all-rounder is unlikely to feature in the remaining league matches of the ongoing IPL season. His absence comes as a big blow for the franchise, especially when the team is still fighting to secure a place in the playoffs.

Overton had emerged as one of Chennai’s most effective bowlers this season and currently stands among the team’s leading wicket-takers. His pace, aggressive bowling style, and ability to contribute with the bat added important balance to the squad. The England all-rounder had played a key role in several matches, particularly during the middle overs where he consistently delivered breakthroughs for the team. As Chennai battle through a difficult season filled with injuries, the departure of Overton further weakens the side ahead of its final league matches.

Alongside the announcement regarding Overton, Chennai Super Kings also confirmed a replacement signing. The franchise has brought in Karnataka all-rounder Macneil Noronha as a replacement for injured player Ramakrishna Ghosh. Ramakrishna Ghosh’s IPL journey unfortunately ended almost as soon as it began. The young all-rounder suffered a serious injury during his debut match against Mumbai Indians on May 3. He fractured his leg during the game and was ruled out for the remainder of the tournament.

Despite the setback, Ghosh had managed to impress in his first IPL appearance. He picked up one wicket while conceding 24 runs and showed glimpses of promise. However, the injury ended his campaign prematurely and forced Chennai to search for a replacement. Macneil Noronha arrives at CSK after a strong domestic season and is regarded as one of Karnataka cricket’s emerging talents. Recently, he was honored with the prestigious MA Chidambaram Trophy during the BCCI’s annual Naman Awards ceremony.

Noronha enjoyed a remarkable run in domestic cricket during the 2024-25 season. He finished as the highest run-scorer in the Colonel CK Nayudu Trophy and earned praise for his consistency with the bat. In the Maharaja Trophy 2025, representing Mangaluru Dragons, he scored 253 runs in 10 innings and also contributed with the ball by taking 10 wickets through his off-spin bowling. The versatile all-rounder is expected to provide additional depth to Chennai’s squad, though adapting quickly to the pressures of IPL cricket will be a major challenge.

Overton and Ghosh are not the only injury concerns troubling Chennai this season. The franchise has already lost multiple players due to fitness issues, severely affecting team combinations throughout the campaign. Fast bowler Khaleel Ahmed was ruled out earlier due to a thigh muscle strain. Before his injury, he had featured in five matches and picked up two wickets for the franchise. Though his performances were modest, his absence reduced CSK’s pace-bowling options.

Young batter Ayush Mhatre also suffered a hamstring injury during the season. Mhatre had impressed with his aggressive batting approach, scoring 201 runs in six matches at a remarkable strike rate of 177.88. His fearless batting in the middle order had become one of Chennai’s biggest positives this season. Australian pacer Nathan Ellis, meanwhile, failed to play a single match after suffering a hamstring injury before the tournament began. Chennai had purchased Ellis for Rs 2 crore during the IPL 2024 mega auction and expected him to strengthen the bowling attack, but fitness problems kept him out of action entirely. The team’s biggest concern, however, continues to revolve around former captain MS Dhoni. The legendary wicketkeeper-batter has not played a single match this season due to a calf strain. Dhoni’s absence has not only hurt Chennai’s batting depth but also deprived the side of his leadership and experience during tense situations.

Australian fast bowler Spencer Johnson has also remained unavailable because of fitness issues. Additionally, South African middle-order batter Dewald Brevis missed the first three matches of the season, which contributed to Chennai’s poor start in the tournament. Despite all these setbacks, Chennai Super Kings have managed to keep their playoff hopes alive. The five-time champions currently sit fifth in the IPL 2026 points table with 12 points from 11 matches.
