India Probable XI for Afghanistan ODIs: Pace & Kohli replacement

With Virat Kohli ruled out due to a hamstring injury, Yashasvi Jaiswal emerges as the frontrunner to bat at No. 3; Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya cleared for selection

India’s men’s cricket team is set to experiment with both personnel and batting order in the upcoming three-match ODI series against Afghanistan, starting June 14 in Dharamshala. This marks the first bilateral ODI series between the two nations on Indian soil, and team management is likely to hand out at least two debut caps across the rubber.

Sources close to the selection committee confirmed that Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya have received fitness clearance from the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, making them available for the series. However, Virat Kohli’s absence due to a hamstring strain has opened up the crucial No. 3 slot.

Opening Pair Sorted

Captain Shubman Gill is expected to partner Rohit Sharma at the top of the order. Gill has been in formidable touch this year, amassing 732 runs in IPL 2026 and following it up with 490 runs in 11n international innings across formats. Rohit, despite a mixed IPL campaign plagued by minor injuries, still managed 650 runs in 14 games – including two hundreds – and finished as India’s second-highest ODI run-getter in 2025.

No Kohli, Jaiswal in Contention

With Kohli ruled out, the BCCI has officially named Yashasvi Jaiswal as his replacement. The left-hander has played only four ODIs in 2025 but scored 171 runs including a century. Ishan Kishan remains an option for the middle order, though team management prefers KL Rahul at No. 5, making Jaiswal the likeliest choice for the one-drop position.

Vice-captain Shreyas Iyer is set to bat at No. 4, followed by Rahul at five and Hardik Pandya at six.

Hardik’s Form Under Scanner

IPL 2026 was a forgettable season for the Mumbai Indians all-rounder. In ten innings, Hardik scored just 206 runs and picked only four wickets across nine bowling appearances. His ability to bowl a full quota of ten overs remains an unresolved concern.

“The sports science team has cleared him for competitive cricket, but match situations will be the real test,” a team insider said. If Hardik is rested or fails to deliver, Nitish Reddy – who smashed 302 runs in 14 IPL games this year – is expected to get a look-in.

All-Rounder Puzzle

Washington Sundar and Hardik will form the core all-round foundation. Washington was impressive against Australia in the third ODI, taking four wickets, and carried that form into the home series against South Africa. In case Hardik misses out, Nitish Reddy provides a like-for-like replacement.

With Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel not part of the squad, Vidarbha’s Harsh Dubey is in line for an ODI debut. Dubey finished as the highest wicket-taker in Ranji Trophy 2024-25 with 69 scalps, playing a key role in Vidarbha’s title win.

Pacer Face-Off: Arshdeep or Prince?

Arshdeep Singh has been India’s pace mainstay across formats, but his tendency to concede extras – especially wide deliveries – remains a recurring issue. “When he loses his line, especially the wide yorker, boundaries flow to third man and fine leg,” a bowling coach familiar with his game noted.

Prince Yadav, meanwhile, has impressed with his disciplined length. The youngster claimed the prized wicket of Virat Kohli in IPL 2026 and finished with 16 wickets in 14 games at an economy of 8.83. With head coach Gautam Gambhir keen to audition new names, Prince could get the nod over Arshdeep in at least one ODI.

Gurnoor Brar, the 6-foot-5 Punjab pacer who took 11 wickets in eight Vijay Hazare matches, is also expected to feature.

Possible Playing XI

Wicketkeeper: KL Rahul

Batters: Shubman Gill (captain), Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shreyas Iyer (vice-captain)

All-rounders: Hardik Pandya, Washington Sundar, Harsh Dubey, Nitish Reddy

Bowlers: Prince Yadav, Prasidh Krishna, Kuldeep Yadav, Arshdeep Singh

Series Schedule

The three ODIs will be played on June 14 (Dharamshala), June 17 (Lucknow) and June 20 (Chennai). All matches start at 1:30 PM IST.

RCB vs Punjab Kings: Bengaluru Look to Extend Dominance in Dharamshala

Virat Kohli Eyes 500 Runs as Punjab Fight Pressure Ahead of Crucial IPL Clash

The Indian Premier League returns with another high-voltage encounter as Royal Challengers Bengaluru take on Punjab Kings at the picturesque HPCA Stadium in Dharamshala on Sunday afternoon. The clash carries huge importance for both teams as the playoff race enters a decisive stage of the tournament. While Bengaluru arrive full of confidence after back-to-back victories, Punjab Kings find themselves under immense pressure following a poor run of form. The match is also significant because Punjab have struggled historically against Bengaluru at this venue and have not defeated them in Dharamshala for nearly 15 years.

The last time Punjab managed to beat Bengaluru at the HPCA Stadium was back in 2011. Since then, Bengaluru have enjoyed dominance whenever the two teams have met here. In the previous season, Punjab suffered a heavy 60-run defeat against RCB at the same venue. This contest is being viewed as a battle between momentum and pressure. Bengaluru are currently riding high after consecutive wins that have pushed them close to playoff qualification, while Punjab Kings are desperate to revive their campaign after suffering five straight defeats.

Adding more intensity to the rivalry is the memory of last season’s IPL final, where Bengaluru defeated Punjab by six runs in a thrilling contest to lift the trophy. Punjab now have an opportunity to settle scores in front of their home supporters. Historically, the rivalry between the two franchises has remained extremely close. Both teams have faced each other 37 times in IPL history. Bengaluru hold a slight edge with 19 victories, while Punjab have won 18 matches.

Much of Bengaluru’s success this season has revolved around the outstanding form of Virat Kohli. The veteran batter has once again proved why he remains one of the greatest players in IPL history. Kohli has scored 484 runs in 12 matches this season at a remarkable strike rate of 165.75. The former RCB captain is just 16 runs away from completing another 500-run IPL season. He enters the match after a sensational unbeaten century against Kolkata in the previous game, where he smashed 105 runs off just 60 deliveries.

Kohli’s consistency at the top of the order has given Bengaluru strong starts throughout the season. Alongside him, players like Will Jacks, Rajat Patidar and Devdutt Padikkal have contributed important runs in the middle order. Krunal Pandya has also played a key all-round role for the side. However, Bengaluru still have a few concerns. The form of Jitesh Sharma, Romario Shepherd and Jacob Bethell remains inconsistent, which could become an issue in pressure situations later in the tournament. In the bowling department, Bengaluru appear extremely balanced. Experienced pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar has led the attack brilliantly and currently sits at the top of the wicket-taking charts with 22 wickets this season. Josh Hazlewood has also provided crucial breakthroughs with the new ball and at the death.

Punjab Kings, meanwhile, continue to rely heavily on their batting lineup. Opener Prabhsimran Singh has been the team’s standout performer with the bat this season. He has scored 439 runs in 12 matches, including five half-centuries. He also enters this game with confidence after scoring a fifty against Mumbai in the previous match. Captain Shreyas Iyer has also been among the runs and has played several important innings under pressure. Punjab’s batting unit showed its full potential earlier this season when the team chased down a massive 264-run target against Delhi on April 25, one of the highest successful run chases in IPL history.

Despite their batting firepower, Punjab’s biggest weakness has been their bowling, especially during the death overs. The team has repeatedly failed to defend big totals because bowlers have leaked runs in the final overs of matches. At the Dharamshala venue itself, Punjab failed to defend totals above 200 in both matches played this season. Their inability to control scoring in the last five overs has become a major concern for the team management. Punjab also hold an unwanted IPL record. They have lost the highest number of matches after scoring 200 or more runs, highlighting their struggles in defending strong totals.

Arshdeep Singh remains Punjab’s leading wicket-taker this season with 13 wickets, but his economy rate of 9.69 reflects the challenges faced by the bowling attack. Marco Jansen and Vijaykumar Vyshak have chipped in with wickets, but consistency has remained an issue. The conditions at the HPCA Stadium suggest another high-scoring contest. Dharamshala has produced batting-friendly surfaces this season, with both matches played here witnessing scores of 200 or more. Interestingly, both games were won by teams chasing targets after winning the toss and choosing to bowl first. The weather forecast for Sunday looks clear, with no rain expected during the match. Fans can therefore expect a full contest under pleasant conditions in one of the most scenic cricket venues in the world.

For Bengaluru, a win would almost secure their playoff position and further strengthen their confidence heading into the knockout phase. For Punjab Kings, however, this match could define their season. Another defeat would seriously damage their playoff hopes and increase pressure on the squad. With star players, explosive batting lineups and major playoff implications, the clash between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Punjab Kings promises to deliver another thrilling chapter in IPL 2026.

Punjab Face Mumbai In Must-Win IPL Clash At Dharamshala

Punjab Kings aim to end four-match losing streak as struggling Mumbai Indians look to stay alive in playoff race.

Punjab Kings will face Mumbai Indians in a crucial IPL 2026 clash on Thursday at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamshala, with both teams under pressure for very different reasons. Punjab are desperate to end a four-match losing streak and keep their playoff hopes alive, while Mumbai, already struggling near the bottom of the table, are looking to salvage pride in what has been one of their poorest IPL campaigns.

The match will begin with the toss at 7 PM. With just a few league games remaining, every point has become vital, especially for Punjab Kings, who have slipped after a promising start to the season. A defeat in Dharamshala could leave Punjab needing to win their remaining two matches to stay firmly in the playoff race.

Punjab’s biggest concern this season has been their bowling attack. Captain Shreyas Iyer recently admitted that the team’s batting performances earlier in the tournament had hidden the weaknesses in the bowling department, but those issues are now becoming increasingly difficult to ignore. Punjab suffered another painful defeat in their previous game against Delhi, where they lost control despite being in a winning position during the final overs.

The pace attack, led by Arshdeep Singh, has recorded the worst economy rate among all ten teams this season. Despite trying multiple combinations involving Lockie Ferguson and Ben Dwarshuis, Punjab have struggled to contain runs during crucial stages of matches. The team management may also consider bringing veteran spinner Yuzvendra Chahal into the playing XI depending on the pitch conditions in Dharamshala.

Punjab’s batting, however, has been one of the brighter aspects of their campaign. Cooper Connolly has emerged as the side’s standout batter this season. The Australian all-rounder has scored 415 runs in 11 matches, including one century and two half-centuries, while maintaining an impressive strike rate of 168.01. His ability to accelerate in the middle overs has made him Punjab’s most reliable run-scorer.

Arshdeep Singh remains Punjab’s leading wicket-taker with 13 wickets in 11 games. Although he has occasionally delivered breakthroughs with the new ball, support from the other bowlers has often been inconsistent.

Mumbai Indians, on the other hand, are enduring a disappointing season. The five-time champions have managed to win only three of their eleven matches and are currently placed ninth on the points table with six points. Injuries, inconsistent batting and a lack of momentum have all contributed to Mumbai’s struggles this year.

Captain Hardik Pandya missed the last two matches because of a minor injury, forcing Suryakumar Yadav to lead the side. Hardik could return for the Dharamshala clash, which would provide a much-needed boost to the team both as a batter and an all-round option.

Suryakumar himself has not been in the best form over the last year, and Mumbai have struggled to find consistency in the middle order. Despite these issues, the team still possesses several match-winners capable of changing games quickly.

Ryan Rickelton has been Mumbai’s top batter this season. The South African wicketkeeper-batter has scored 382 runs in nine matches, including one century and two fifties, at a strike rate of 188.17. His aggressive starts at the top have often given Mumbai momentum during the powerplay overs.

In the bowling department, young spinner Allah Ghazanfar has impressed with 13 wickets in nine matches. Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult are also expected to play key roles in Dharamshala, especially if the conditions assist seam bowling under lights.

Historically, the rivalry between Punjab Kings and Mumbai Indians has been evenly contested. The two teams have faced each other 35 times in IPL history, with both sides winning 17 matches each. One match ended in a tie. Thursday’s clash will therefore also decide which team takes the lead in the head-to-head record.

The HPCA Stadium in Dharamshala is known as one of the most scenic cricket venues in the country and generally offers excellent conditions for batting. The black-soil pitch provides good bounce and pace, allowing batters to play attacking strokes freely. Due to the stadium’s high-altitude location, the ball tends to travel faster through the air, often resulting in high-scoring matches and long sixes.

However, weather could become a major factor in the contest. The Kangra Valley region has witnessed changing weather because of a western disturbance, and there is a possibility of light rain and thunderstorms during the evening. Temperatures are expected to remain between 12 and 20 degrees Celsius with humidity levels around 65 to 75 percent.

Despite the rain threat, the HPCA Stadium has an excellent drainage system. Earlier matches at the venue have started on time even after afternoon showers, so organizers remain hopeful of a full game.

Punjab Kings are likely to field Priyansh Arya, Prabhsimran Singh, Cooper Connolly, Shreyas Iyer, Marcus Stoinis, Suryansh Shedge, Marco Jansen, Lockie Ferguson, Arshdeep Singh, Yuzvendra Chahal and Yash Thakur, with Shashank Singh expected to be used as the impact player.

Mumbai Indians could line up with Ryan Rickelton, Naman Dhir, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Will Jacks, Raj Bawa, Corbin Bosch, Shardul Thakur, Deepak Chahar, Allah Ghazanfar and Jasprit Bumrah. Rohit Sharma is expected to be used as the impact player.
