Chhattisgarh remained under a rain alert on Monday, with the weather department forecasting light to moderate rainfall across most parts of the state over the next 24 hours. Several areas may receive heavy to extremely heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning.

Amid the continuing downpour, a tragic incident was reported from Mainpat in Surguja district, where a young man and woman from Raipur were swept away in the strong current of the Ghungutta River while travelling on a motorcycle. The woman was rescued after a local resident reached the spot with a rope, while the man was later found dead.

The incident took place in the Kamleshwarpur police station area. According to preliminary information, the couple had travelled from Raipur to Mainpat for a visit. They were swept away after encountering the swollen river and its strong current.

A person who heard their cries rushed towards the river with a rope. By then, the woman had reportedly been carried nearly a kilometre downstream. He managed to throw the rope towards her and helped pull her to safety. The man, however, was swept further away.

His body was recovered from the riverbank around three kilometres from the spot on Sunday morning.

The incident comes as several rivers, streams and drainage channels across Chhattisgarh are witnessing increased water levels following persistent rainfall. Authorities have urged people to avoid entering or approaching swollen rivers and streams, particularly during periods of strong currents.

Waterlogging and road disruptions in Korba

Heavy rain has also affected parts of Korba. The Dadar Nala in the city was flowing at a high level on Saturday morning when a Scorpio attempting to cross the water was swept into the strong current. Three people travelling in the vehicle managed to get out safely. The vehicle was subsequently recovered.

In another incident, debris from the SECL Kusmunda dumping area flowed onto the Kanki-Sarvamangala main road, covering the stretch with mud and sludge. A car and a passenger bus became stuck in the debris. While the car was almost completely submerged in the mud, the bus remained trapped with its wheels stuck.

No casualties were reported in the incident.

Several residential areas of Korba also witnessed waterlogging, with water entering homes and shops in some localities. More than a dozen houses in the Sharda Vihar Atal Awas area were reportedly affected.

Modamsilli dam gate opens automatically

In Dhamtari district, the gates of the Modamsilli dam opened following a rise in the water level caused by continuous rainfall.

The dam, known for its automatic siphon system, had reached around 98.82% of its capacity. Its gates are designed to open automatically once the water level reaches full capacity.

With water levels rising in several parts of the state, authorities have appealed to residents to stay away from rivers, streams and other water bodies.

Rain likely to continue for two more days

The weather department has forecast light to moderate rainfall across most parts of Chhattisgarh over the next two days. Some areas may experience heavy rainfall along with thunderstorms and lightning.

Raipur witnessed rainfall throughout Sunday, with showers continuing intermittently on Monday morning. The city is expected to record a maximum temperature of around 24°C and a minimum of about 22°C.

During the previous 24 hours, Bilaspur recorded the state's highest maximum temperature at 28.6°C, while Jagdalpur recorded the lowest minimum temperature at 21.4°C.

The continuing rainfall has raised concerns over waterlogging, swollen rivers and road connectivity in several districts. Authorities have advised residents to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary travel through areas affected by flooding or strong water currents.

Four people lost their lives in two separate road accidents in Chhattisgarh's Surguja district on Friday night. Three young men were killed in a head-on collision between two motorcycles in Mainpat, while a woman died after an unidentified truck hit the motorcycle she was travelling on along National Highway-43. Her husband sustained serious injuries and is undergoing treatment.

Police have identified the deceased as Arjun Lohar (23), Viphal Kumar Majhi (21), Guddu Ram (22) and Rita Ekka (48). Separate investigations have been launched into both incidents.

Three Killed in Mainpat Bike Collision

The first accident took place at around 8 pm on the Narmadapur–Bijalhawa main road under Kamleshwarpur police station limits in Mainpat.

According to police, two motorcycles travelling at high speed collided head-on, throwing the riders onto the road. The impact was so severe that Arjun Lohar, a resident of Lundra, and Guddu Ram, a resident of Kot in Sitapur, died on the spot.

Third Victim Succumbs During Treatment

The third rider, Viphal Kumar Majhi, sustained critical injuries in the crash. He was initially taken to a Community Health Centre before being referred to Ambikapur Medical College Hospital.

Despite medical treatment, he succumbed to his injuries, taking the death toll in the accident to three.

Family members said Viphal and his friend Guddu had gone to Mainpat for an outing and were returning home when the accident occurred. Arjun was reportedly travelling to Narmadapur to visit his in-laws. He had been married for about a year.

Police said weather conditions were clear at the time of the accident, and preliminary findings indicate that overspeeding may have been the primary cause of the collision.

Woman Killed on National Highway

In the second incident, a couple travelling on a motorcycle was hit from behind by an unidentified truck near Sedam Bazaar on National Highway-43.

The collision claimed the life of Rita Ekka (48), a resident of Deori village, while her husband, Sukhan Ekka, suffered serious injuries.

The couple was returning home from Sitapur when the accident occurred.

Search for Truck Driver Underway

Police have launched a search for the unidentified truck and its driver, who fled the scene after the collision.

Officials are examining evidence and speaking to witnesses to identify the vehicle involved. A case has been registered, and further investigation is underway.

The twin accidents have once again highlighted concerns over road safety and speeding on highways and rural roads in the region.

Located in central India, the state offers many peaceful and scenic destinations that become perfect getaway spots during the summer season. While many people travel to crowded hill stations during vacations, Chhattisgarh provides calm, less-explored places where tourists can enjoy nature, adventure, and relaxation. The state is blessed with green forests, cool waterfalls, wildlife sanctuaries, and historical sites that attract travelers looking for a refreshing summer experience. Whether someone loves adventure, spirituality, or nature, Chhattisgarh has something unique to offer.

Here are the top three places to visit in Chhattisgarh during summer.

1. Chitrakote Waterfall – The Niagara of India

Chitrakote Waterfall is one of the most famous tourist attractions in Chhattisgarh and is often called the “Niagara Falls of India.” Located near Jagdalpur in Bastar district, this spectacular waterfall is formed by the Indravati River and is known for its breathtaking beauty.

During summer, Chitrakote becomes an excellent destination for travelers who want to enjoy nature and escape the heat. The cool breeze, surrounding greenery, and peaceful atmosphere make the place refreshing and relaxing. The waterfall drops from a height of nearly 100 feet and creates a stunning view that attracts photographers and nature lovers. One of the best experiences at Chitrakote Falls is watching the sunrise or sunset near the waterfall. The changing colors of the sky and the sound of flowing water create a magical environment. Tourists can also enjoy boating near the falls when water levels are safe.

The nearby tribal villages allow visitors to experience the rich tribal culture of Bastar. Local handicrafts, traditional food, and cultural activities make the trip even more memorable. Chitrakote Falls is not just a natural wonder but also a peaceful destination where travelers can relax and connect with nature during summer vacations.

2. Mainpat – The Mini Tibet of Chhattisgarh

Mainpat is a beautiful hill station located in the Surguja district of Chhattisgarh. Known as the “Mini Tibet of Chhattisgarh,” Mainpat is famous for its cool weather, lush green valleys, waterfalls, and Tibetan culture. The fresh air and calm environment make Mainpat a perfect destination for families, couples, and solo travelers during summer.

3. Tirathgarh Waterfall – A Hidden Natural Paradise
