Fifteen-year-old batting prodigy Vaibhav Suryavanshi has been selected in the India-A squad for the upcoming One-Day Tri-Series in Sri Lanka, marking another major milestone in his rapidly rising cricket career. The squad was announced on Thursday, with Tilak Varma named as captain for the series that also includes Sri Lanka-A and Afghanistan-A teams.

Suryavanshi’s selection comes on the back of a remarkable run of performances across domestic and franchise cricket, including record-breaking innings in the Indian Premier League (IPL), standout displays at the Under-19 level, and consistent performances in List-A cricket. His inclusion has been widely seen as a reward for his explosive batting and maturity beyond his age.

The India-A team will play all matches of the Tri-Series in Dambulla in June, followed by two multi-day matches against Sri Lanka-A. While the white-ball squad has been announced, a separate squad for the longer format will be named later by the selectors.

Suryavanshi has been one of the most talked-about young cricketers in recent years. He first gained national attention during the Under-19 World Cup, where he played a crucial role for India and was named Player of the Tournament. In the final, he delivered a stunning innings of 175 runs, showcasing his ability to perform on the big stage under pressure.

His rise has been even more remarkable considering his extremely early entry into professional cricket. At just 12 years of age, he made his Ranji Trophy debut for Bihar in January 2024, becoming one of the youngest players ever to feature in India’s premier domestic competition. In doing so, he surpassed records previously associated with legendary names like Sachin Tendulkar and Yuvraj Singh in terms of debut age milestones.

Suryavanshi’s aggressive batting style has made him a standout in the shortest formats as well. In IPL 2025, he made a huge impact with two centuries, including a rapid 37-ball hundred against Hyderabad, where he hit 12 sixes and 5 boundaries in a breathtaking innings. He also scored another century earlier in the season against Gujarat, further cementing his reputation as a fearless young opener.

Across IPL 2026, he has continued his impressive form, scoring 440 runs in 11 matches at a strike rate of 237. His ability to consistently maintain such a high scoring rate has made him one of the most exciting prospects in Indian cricket. Overall, in his IPL career so far, he has accumulated over 250 runs in just a handful of matches, including a century and a half-century.

In List-A cricket, Suryavanshi has played eight matches, scoring 353 runs at an average of 44.12 and a strike rate close to 165. His highest score of 190 highlights his ability to play long, dominant innings, while also accelerating when required. He has already registered one century and one half-century in the format, along with a strong boundary-hitting record.

His performances in youth international cricket have been equally impressive. During the Asia Cup Rising Stars tournament, Suryavanshi scored 239 runs in four matches at an average of 59.75 and an astonishing strike rate of 243.87. His top score of 144 in the tournament demonstrated his ability to dominate bowling attacks, while also showing tactical maturity in pacing an innings.

Cricket experts believe that his rapid rise is a result of a rare combination of fearless hitting, natural timing, and strong mental composure. Despite his young age, he has shown an ability to adapt quickly across formats and conditions, which is a key requirement at higher levels of international cricket.

The India-A squad for the Tri-Series features a mix of young and emerging talents, including players like Priyansh Arya, Riyan Parag (vice-captain), Ayush Badoni, Nishant Sindhu, and Anshul Kamboj. Wicketkeeping duties will be shared between Prabhsimran Singh and Kumar Kushagra. The selection reflects India’s focus on building a strong pipeline of talent for the future.

Selectors are also keeping an eye on upcoming international commitments, including a Test match against Afghanistan scheduled for early June. Reports suggest that senior players like Jasprit Bumrah may be rested, while young performers could be given opportunities depending on workload management and team balance considerations.

Meanwhile, discussions continue around the composition of India’s white-ball squads, with selectors evaluating options for wicketkeeping roles and middle-order stability. Performances in domestic and IPL cricket are expected to play a key role in shaping future selections.

For Vaibhav Suryavanshi, however, the immediate focus will be on the Sri Lanka Tri-Series, where he will have another opportunity to prove himself at the India-A level. Given his current form and trajectory, expectations are high, but the selectors appear confident that the young opener is ready for the next step in his development journey.
