A heavy container train rammed into a stationary public bus trapped at a busy railway crossing, triggering a massive inferno that engulfed several vehicles.

A catastrophic collision between a heavily loaded container freight train and a Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA) public bus left at least eight people dead and 35 others injured on Saturday afternoon. The violent impact triggered a massive explosion, sending flames ripping through the bus and trapping passengers inside at a central intersection in the Thai capital.

Tragedy at Makkasan Crossing

The disaster struck around 3:40 PM local time on Asok-Din Daeng Road, right between the Rama IX and Asok-Phetchaburi intersections. According to local police and emergency workers, a freight train traveling from the southern Chachoengsao province toward Bangkok’s Bang Sue district plowed directly into the side of the public bus.

Initial reports from the scene indicate that the bus became stuck on the tracks at the Makkasan level crossing near the Airport Rail Link station due to a red light ahead, leaving it unable to clear the tracks before the automated safety barriers descended.

Horrific Chain Reaction

The heavily laden cargo train could not brake in time, hitting the stationary bus at a moderate speed and dragging it along the rail line. The impact crushed the vehicle, causing it to explode and violently burst into flames. The wreckage tore through nearby traffic, smashing into at least ten other vehicles, including several private cars and motorcycles waiting at the intersection.

"I heard a massive bang followed by intermittent popping sounds like explosions," said a local resident who witnessed the crash from a nearby shop. "The fire spread almost instantly, and smoke covered the entire street within seconds."

Massive Emergency Response

First responders from the Phaya Thai Fire Station and medical teams rushed to the site as massive plumes of black smoke billowed over downtown Bangkok. Emergency crews worked frantically to douse the intense blaze with water hoses while rescue workers pulled bleeding and burned victims from the mangled steel framework.

The city’s Erawan Medical Center confirmed that all eight fatalities occurred inside the bus, their bodies recovered once the fire was brought under control. Bangkok police chief Urumporn Koondejsumrit confirmed that 35 people were injured, with at least two individuals reported to be in critical condition. The injured were distributed to nearby hospitals for immediate trauma care.

Structural Failure Under Scrutiny

Speaking from the scene, Deputy Transport Minister Siripong Angkasakulkiat stated that preliminary findings show the bus was trapped across the tracks by a red light, which in turn prevented the safety barrier from operating or lowering properly. However, he emphasized that a deep technical assessment is required to see if mechanical or signaling failures contributed to the tragedy.

Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has ordered an immediate, full-scale investigation into the crash, demanding strict accountability and swift compensation for the victims through the BMTA.

Rail Safety Concerns Renewed

The central area where the crash occurred is heavily congested, catering to tens of thousands of commuters daily. This disaster has instantly reignited fierce public debate over Thailand’s transport safety records. It follows a harrowing incident in January when a construction crane collapsed onto a passenger train northeast of Bangkok, killing 32 people.

The State Railway of Thailand has temporarily suspended services on the line, deploying transit buses to ferry stranded rail passengers around the sealed accident site as investigators continue to comb through the debris.
