The countdown for Swachh Survekshan 2025-26 has begun in Bhopal, with the municipal corporation accelerating cleanliness and beautification work across the city ahead of the expected arrival of the survey team within the next two to three days. Civic authorities have intensified on-ground preparations to improve the city’s appearance under the revised survey guidelines issued by the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. The new framework places greater emphasis on visible cleanliness rather than paperwork-based assessments alone. Several public spaces, markets and roads in the state capital are witnessing rapid painting, cleaning and repair work as officials attempt to improve Bhopal’s ranking in the national cleanliness survey.

Focus On Cleanliness

Under the revised Swachh Survekshan guidelines, cities will now be assessed heavily on visible sanitation standards and public cleanliness. As part of the preparations, the Bhopal Municipal Corporation has started intensive cleaning drives on roads, drains and public toilets. Painting work with cleanliness-themed messages has also been carried out at multiple locations across the city. Authorities are additionally focusing on back lanes, garbage-sensitive areas and commercial markets to improve the city’s on-ground presentation before inspection teams arrive.

Markets Under Watch

Major commercial areas including New Market, 10 Number Market, Karond, Kolar, Bairagarh and parts of the old city have been identified as priority zones. Municipal teams are carrying out waste collection drives, repairing footpaths and improving public spaces in these areas. Decorative tiles and wall paintings are also being installed at several locations as part of the beautification campaign. Officials believe market cleanliness will play a major role in the city’s final assessment score under the new ranking parameters.

Visible Problems Remain

Despite the intensified campaign, several areas of the city continue to face problems such as open drains, damaged dustbins, pothole-ridden roads and garbage accumulation. Visible cleanliness alone carries 1,500 marks in the survey, making it one of the biggest challenges for Bhopal this year. Residents in some localities have pointed out that cleanliness drives are concentrated mainly on major roads while inner residential areas still require attention.

Ranking System Revised

According to officials, Swachh Survekshan 2025-26 rankings will be decided on the basis of 10 major indicators. The highest weightage of 10,500 marks has been assigned to on-ground assessment and citizen feedback. Visible cleanliness accounts for 1,500 marks, while ODF, ODF++ and Water Plus certification carry 1,000 marks. Garbage-free city star ratings will also contribute another 1,000 marks to the final ranking. The revised system has increased pressure on civic bodies to demonstrate practical sanitation improvements rather than relying on documentation.

Garbage Disposal Challenge

Garbage management in commercial markets remains one of the biggest concerns for municipal authorities. Under the guidelines, residential areas and parks must be cleaned at least once daily, while commercial markets, railway stations, bus stands and food streets require cleaning twice a day. Several market areas in Bhopal still struggle with overflowing garbage points and waste disposal issues, which could affect the city’s cleanliness score.

Beautification Work Continues

The corporation is also focusing on murals, waste-to-art installations and greenery enhancement projects to improve the city’s appearance. Nearly Rs 3 crore is reportedly being spent on wall paintings and artistic installations across Bhopal. Last year, major road improvement work was carried out ahead of the Global Investors Summit (GIS), but several stretches have again deteriorated. Back lanes are being painted and redesigned to improve the visual appeal of neighbourhoods included in the survey route.

Slums And Drains Concern

Cleanliness around slum areas, schools and drains continues to remain a major challenge for the civic body. Several drains across the city still contain garbage and debris despite ongoing cleaning operations. Near Ravindra Bhavan and other areas, broken protective nets and waste accumulation remain visible. Municipal officials said drain-cleaning work has been completed in six zones, while sewage infrastructure projects are also underway in some locations.

Adamapur Dumping Yard Biggest Issue

The Adamapur legacy waste dumping site continues to pose the biggest obstacle to Bhopal’s Swachh Survekshan performance. The massive garbage mound has repeatedly affected the city’s ranking in previous surveys. Officials have also faced challenges due to recurring fires and polluted water flowing from the site. Environmental concerns linked to the dumping yard remain unresolved despite ongoing waste management efforts.
