As the Mohan Yadav government approaches two-and-a-half years in office, the BJP leadership in Madhya Pradesh has begun an internal review focused on lost Assembly seats, booth management and preparations for upcoming civic and panchayat elections.

The review exercise started on Sunday at the Chief Minister’s residence in Bhopal, where Chief Minister Mohan Yadav held one-on-one discussions with around 20 ministers and senior BJP functionaries.

Focus On Lost Seats

According to party leaders, ministers were specifically asked about constituencies where the BJP lost during the last Assembly elections and the current political situation in those areas. Discussions reportedly included weak booths, local anti-incumbency issues, opposition activity and organisational preparedness ahead of future elections.

Senior BJP leaders, including Hemant Khandelwal, BJP national co-organisation general secretary Shiv Prakash and state in-charge Mahendra Singh, were also present during the meetings at the CM House.

The meetings began in the afternoon and continued late into the evening.

Civic Poll Preparations

A significant part of the review was linked to preparations for upcoming municipal and gram panchayat elections in Madhya Pradesh. Ministers were asked to provide feedback on strong and weak local bodies in districts under their charge.

Sources familiar with the discussions said the leadership also sought inputs on booth-level management, possible candidates and coordination with local party units. Ministers were questioned about their organisational participation, district visits and involvement in party meetings over the last several months.

The BJP leadership appears to be placing renewed emphasis on booth strengthening after identifying several weak pockets during recent electoral assessments.

Review Of Government Work

The Chief Minister also reviewed departmental performance and progress on election promises made by the state government since taking office in December 2023.

Officials said ministers were asked about the condition of schools, anganwadis and health centres in their respective districts and whether they had conducted regular field visits. The implementation status of welfare schemes and the on-ground impact of government programmes also came up during the review.

Discussions reportedly covered wheat procurement operations and other administrative issues linked to rural outreach.

Welfare Schemes Under Lens

The meeting also included a review of flagship state schemes such as Ladli Behna Yojana, Mukhyamantri Kisan Kalyan Yojana and housing-related initiatives.

Ministers were asked how actively they were monitoring these schemes in their districts and what kind of public response they were receiving. Feedback was also sought regarding publicity efforts and coordination with district-level officials.

The Chief Minister reportedly reviewed travel reports and sought details on how many district tours ministers had undertaken, the meetings they chaired and the development works they monitored.

Committees And Boards Discussed

Another issue discussed during the meeting was the formation and functioning of district-level committees and government-linked boards and corporations.

Party leaders reviewed the status of committees such as Disha Committees, Janbhagidari Committees and district coordination panels. Training and coordination for newly appointed chairpersons and members of corporations, boards and mandals also figured in the discussions.

Khandelwal later told reporters that a training programme for corporation and board chairpersons is being planned, where guidance will be given on public engagement and coordination with the organisation.

Debate Over Ministers’ Powers

During the discussions, the issue of expanding the powers of Ministers of State also reportedly came up. At present, state ministers in Madhya Pradesh have limited authority, mainly linked to transfer matters involving Class III and IV employees.

The leadership is understood to have discussed workload sharing between Cabinet ministers and Ministers of State, although no formal decision has been announced yet.

Khandelwal clarified that there was no discussion on cabinet expansion during Sunday’s meetings. He said the immediate focus remained on governance review and strengthening organisational activities in districts.

Senior Ministers Attend

Deputy Chief Minister Rajendra Shukla was among the first leaders to arrive for the discussions. Senior ministers including Prahlad Patel, Kailash Vijayvargiya and Vishvas Sarang also attended.

Deputy Chief Minister Jagdish Devda could not attend due to health reasons. Meanwhile, Energy Minister Pradyuman Singh Tomar drew attention after arriving at the CM residence riding an e-scooter without a pilot vehicle.

Later in the night, the BJP core committee meeting was also scheduled virtually, in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent push for reducing fuel consumption and encouraging virtual meetings.
