The co-location of Anganwadi centres and primary schools under National Education Policy 2020 is expected to improve early childhood education, nutrition access and school readiness for lakhs of children across Madhya Pradesh.

Integrated Learning Model

In a major step towards implementing the vision of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the Centre and state governments have begun integrating Anganwadi centres with nearby primary schools to strengthen the foundation of early childhood care and education.

The initiative, being carried out under the Ministry of Women and Child Development’s co-location guidelines and Mission Saksham Anganwadi and Poshan 2.0, aims to create a smoother transition for children entering formal schooling while improving access to nutrition and educational resources.

Officials said the move is designed to reduce the fear and hesitation many children experience when entering school for the first time. By bringing Anganwadi centres and schools into the same campus, children are expected to become familiar with the school environment much earlier.

Focus On Coordination

The co-location model is being implemented mainly in areas where Anganwadi centres are situated close to government primary schools and safe access is available for children.

According to officials, Anganwadi centres currently functioning in temporary or resource-constrained buildings are being shifted to school premises wherever additional classrooms are available. The arrangement is also expected to improve utilisation of government infrastructure and public resources.

In geographically difficult areas where physical co-location may not be feasible, departments are carrying out digital mapping of nearby Anganwadi centres and schools to ensure coordination between the two systems.

The initiative also seeks to strengthen coordination between the Women and Child Development Department and the School Education Department, something policymakers have repeatedly highlighted as necessary for improving foundational learning outcomes.

Easier School Transition

Education experts associated with the programme believe the integrated model could help reduce dropout rates in early grades.

Children studying in Anganwadi centres located inside school campuses are likely to develop familiarity with classrooms, teachers and surroundings before Class 1 admission. Officials say this could make the transition into formal schooling more comfortable and less intimidating.

The shared use of school playgrounds, learning materials and classroom infrastructure is also expected to improve the overall learning environment for children in the 3–6 age group.

Programmes such as “Aadharshila” and “Jadui Pitara”, which focus on play-based learning, are expected to see wider and more coordinated use under the new arrangement.

Data Mapping Planned

Authorities are also working on matching child-level data between Anganwadi centres and schools. Officials said the process would help avoid duplication of services and ensure that eligible children receive the benefits of government welfare schemes without interruption.

Regular attendance monitoring and early identification of children eligible for school admission are expected to become easier through the shared system.

The integration comes at a time when the Centre has been stressing foundational literacy and numeracy as a priority area under NEP 2020.

Madhya Pradesh’s Vidyarambh Drive

Madhya Pradesh has also linked the co-location model with its large-scale “Vidyarambh Certificate Distribution Programme”, aimed at formally marking the beginning of a child’s educational journey.

On the occasion of Bal Chaupal Early Childhood Care and Education Day, more than 94,000 Anganwadi centres across the state organised Vidyarambh certificate ceremonies simultaneously, making Madhya Pradesh the first state in the country to conduct the programme at such scale.

Officials said over 9.28 lakh children in the 5–6 years age group received certificates during the statewide campaign.

The programme saw participation from ministers, MLAs, collectors, chief executive officers and local administrators at various levels. Events were held across districts, projects, sectors and Anganwadi centres throughout the state.

Admission Planning Underway

As part of the next phase, the School Education Department has reportedly shared lists of eligible children with teachers to ensure maximum enrolment in government schools in the upcoming academic session.

Officials said the broader objective is not only to improve enrolment figures but also to strengthen foundational education outcomes during the critical early years of learning.

The Anganwadi-school integration model, a key component of NEP 2020 implementation, is now being closely watched as states look for practical ways to improve early childhood education and reduce learning gaps at the entry level.
