In Balaghat, heavy rain triggered a surge in the Bagh River, sweeping away construction vehicles at an under-construction bridge site, while floodwaters entered houses in Dindori, forcing residents to cope with significant property damage.

According to officials, the bridge over the Bagh River near the Maharashtra border was being constructed under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana at an estimated cost of over ₹10 crore. As water levels rose sharply following continuous rainfall, several vehicles deployed for construction work, including a car, a JCB machine and a loader, were washed away by the strong current. Videos from the site showing vehicles being carried downstream have circulated widely on social media.

In Dindori district, intermittent rainfall has caused the Narmada River and its tributaries to swell. Water flowed over a culvert on the Tudar River, cutting off connectivity to several villages in Karanjia block. Local authorities said floodwaters entered at least 11 houses, damaging household belongings and affecting residents.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for extremely heavy rainfall in nine districts on Monday. Sagar, Damoh, Betul, Dewas, Alirajpur, Umaria, Seoni, Chhindwara and Anuppur are expected to receive very heavy rainfall.

Heavy rainfall warnings have also been issued for Ratlam, Ujjain, Dhar, Shajapur, Sehore, Vidisha, Guna, Narmadapuram, Narsinghpur, Jabalpur, Mandla, Balaghat, Dindori and Panna. Besides these, several other districts, including Bhopal, Gwalior, Morena, Datia, Shivpuri, Satna, Rewa, Sidhi, Singrauli, Neemuch, Khargone and Burhanpur, are likely to witness light to moderate rainfall with isolated heavy spells.

The rainfall has remained widespread over the past 24 hours, with more than 30 districts recording precipitation. Chhindwara received nearly three inches of rain, while Ujjain and Balaghat recorded around 2.25 inches. Umaria and Khajuraho also received approximately two inches of rainfall. Moderate rainfall was reported from Bhopal, Gwalior, Seoni, Mandla, Jabalpur, Ratlam, Damoh, Vidisha, Sehore and several other districts.

Despite the active monsoon, Madhya Pradesh has so far recorded 163.1 mm of seasonal rainfall, about six per cent below the normal average of 172.8 mm. Rainfall distribution, however, remains uneven. Eastern Madhya Pradesh continues to face a 29 per cent deficit, while western districts have received around 17 per cent more rainfall than usual.

Meteorologists expect rainfall activity to intensify further through July, which is traditionally the wettest month of the southwest monsoon season in the state. Historically, nearly one-third of Madhya Pradesh's annual rainfall is recorded during July, making the month crucial for agriculture, reservoirs and groundwater recharge.

The state receives an average annual rainfall of about 37.3 inches. Cities such as Bhopal, Indore, Jabalpur and Gwalior generally record between 38 and 39 inches annually. Among districts this season, Dewas has received the highest rainfall at around 14.2 inches, exceeding its seasonal average by 125 per cent, while Alirajpur has recorded the lowest rainfall at approximately one inch.

Authorities have advised residents living near rivers and low-lying areas to remain alert as water levels continue to rise. Disaster management teams and local administrations are monitoring vulnerable locations, while officials have urged people to avoid crossing flooded roads, bridges and overflowing culverts until water levels recede.

The annual Amarnath Yatra commenced on Friday with the first batch of 4,822 pilgrims beginning their journey to the holy cave shrine through the Baltal and Pahalgam routes in Jammu and Kashmir. Authorities expect more than four lakh devotees to undertake the 57-day pilgrimage, which will continue until August 28.

Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha flagged off the first convoy from the Bhagwati Nagar Base Camp in Jammu. The pilgrims travelled in 259 vehicles under elaborate security arrangements before reaching Kashmir to continue the pilgrimage towards the cave shrine, located at an altitude of 3,888 metres.

The first batch includes 3,707 men, 816 women, 16 children and 246 sadhus. Devotees will offer prayers at the naturally formed ice Shivling, popularly known as Baba Barfani, inside the sacred Amarnath cave.

Authorities have strengthened security across both pilgrimage routes following extensive preparations. Security personnel have been deployed at key locations, while checkpoints and convoy monitoring systems are in place to ensure the safe movement of pilgrims.

Weather remains one of the biggest challenges for this year's pilgrimage. Intermittent rainfall has been reported over the past two days along the Baltal route, and the India Meteorological Department has forecast heavy rain in the region until July 6. In previous years, heavy rainfall and landslides forced temporary suspension of the Yatra, particularly on the Baltal route, which passes through several vulnerable stretches.

To improve pilgrim safety, authorities have installed 12 rainproof domes and shelter sheds along the Baltal-to-cave route. Large emergency shelters have also been established near Sangam and close to the holy cave to accommodate devotees in case of adverse weather conditions. Pilgrims have been advised to descend immediately after completing darshan to avoid congestion and weather-related risks.

Medical infrastructure has also been significantly enhanced this year. Nearly 1,000 doctors and healthcare personnel have been deployed along both routes. Temporary 100-bed hospitals have been established on the Baltal and Pahalgam routes to provide emergency medical care.

Oxygen booths have been installed at intervals of one to two kilometres to assist pilgrims facing breathing difficulties at high altitudes. Authorities have also arranged medical aid centres, emergency response units and oxygen-equipped camps at strategic locations, including Domel, Railpathri, Barari, Sangam Top, Chandanwari, Pissu Top and Sheshnag.

Real-time weather information is being displayed on digital screens at multiple locations, while regular announcements are being made at the base camps to keep pilgrims informed about changing weather conditions and route advisories.

The Amarnath Yatra is one of Hinduism's most significant annual pilgrimages, drawing devotees from across India and abroad. With enhanced security, medical facilities and weather monitoring systems in place, authorities are aiming to ensure a safe and smooth pilgrimage despite the challenging terrain and unpredictable weather.

Relief from the recent heatwave was short-lived as the State Meteorological Department on Sunday forecast thunder, lightning, heavy winds and localized rain over the next five days, with gusts likely reaching 50–60 kilometres per hour in parts of the state. The warning comes a day after a sudden storm in Korba’s Pali police station area caused a fatal tree collapse that killed three youths.

What happened in Korba
Saturday evening’s storm struck without much lead time, sending people rushing for cover. According to local police and hospital sources, three young men who took shelter under a large roadside tree in Pali were fatally injured when a heavy branch snapped and fell on them. Initial reports say the men were pronounced dead at the scene; their identities are being verified and an inquest has been ordered, officials said.

Other local impacts
Across the state, showers and gusty winds were reported in Raipur, Sarguja and Pendra. In Pendra, authorities reported that strong winds tore off a tin shed and uprooted at least one tree. No casualties were reported from those incidents. Meteorological data for the past 24 hours showed Durg recorded the highest daytime temperature at 42.6°C, while Pendra Road logged a minimum of 24.2°C.

What the forecast says
The meteorological department issued a fresh advisory early Sunday, warning of thunder, lightning, heavy winds and isolated heavy rainfall over various districts through the coming five days. Officials said two trough systems — one extending from central Pakistan to the Andhra coast and another active in the upper levels from the Bay of Bengal to the Lakshadweep region — are pumping moisture into the region and destabilising the atmosphere.

“Due to these systems, we expect convective activity across Chhattisgarh. Wind gusts of 50–60 km/h are possible at isolated places, along with lightning and scattered heavy showers,” a state meteorological official told reporters. The forecast specifically named Raipur, Durg, Korba, Sarguja and adjacent districts as areas likely to be affected.

Local advisory and safety tips
State authorities urged people to avoid standing under trees, stay away from power poles and open fields during storms, and secure loose objects that can be blown away by strong winds. The department also advised farmers to protect standing crops and fishermen to avoid venturing into seas or large reservoirs until advisories are lifted.

Raipur outlook
For the state capital, forecasters expect the sky to remain partly to mostly cloudy on Sunday with chances of thunder, dust squalls or brief heavy rain during the day. Raipur’s daytime temperature is likely to hover around 41°C, with a minimum near 28°C, offering modest relief from the more extreme highs recorded earlier in the week.

Wider context
Weather officials said daytime temperatures across the state have already fallen by 2–3 degrees Celsius in the last 24 hours, and another 2–3 degree drop is possible over the next two days as convective activity continues. However, they cautioned that the accompanying winds and lightning will pose hazards, especially where infrastructure is vulnerable.

Ground reaction
Residents in low-lying and open areas reported sudden changes in wind direction and rapid cloud build-up on Saturday evening. “The sky darkened within minutes and the wind hit so hard that sheets of the temporary market stalls started flapping,” said one trader in Pendra, who declined to be named. Local civic bodies said they are on alert and monitoring vulnerable trees and electricity lines.

What’s next
Authorities said district administrations have been asked to keep disaster response teams on standby and to coordinate with power and road departments for quick restoration work if needed. The meteorological department will review the situation daily and issue updates; people are being asked to follow local alerts and exercise caution during outdoor activities.

Rewa storm rips tin roofs in Chakghat; signboard falls on highway

Chakghat hit by storm
A late‑night thunderstorm and gale-force winds tore through Chakghat town and surrounding areas along the Rewa–UP border on Thursday, causing extensive damage to homes, shops and roadside infrastructure, local officials and residents said Friday morning. Initial reports indicate strong gusts and heavy rain struck the municipal area for several minutes, uprooting trees, toppling electric poles and blowing away tin roofs.

Heavy signboard collapses
The storm’s force was sufficient to bring down a large iron distance signboard that stood outside Chakghat police station on the national highway. The board crashed onto the road shoulder, scattering debris and prompting a brief spell of confusion among passing motorists before teams cleared the obstruction, according to police officials at the scene.

Damage across market
Business districts reported widespread damage to hoardings and shop canopies. Several tin sheds—common on shop fronts and residential houses—were ripped off and carried across lanes, leaving exposed interiors and broken windows. Stranded fallen trees and snapped utility poles blocked key stretches of the highway, disrupting traffic into the morning.

Power and traffic hit
The falling poles and severed cables left large pockets of Chakghat and nearby villages without electricity. Municipal and electricity department crews were working to isolate faults, remove debris and restore supply, but residents said many areas remained powerless during the morning peak. Motorists faced delays; local authorities advised drivers to take alternate routes until highways crews reopened the main carriageway.

No casualties reported yet
Officials and local volunteers said there were no confirmed fatalities by early Friday, a relief after the violence of the storm. “We have not received any report of loss of life,” a district emergency official said. Several vehicles parked on streets sustained dent and window damage after being struck by fallen branches or blown roof sheets, and a handful of residents reported minor injuries while moving debris.

Relief teams mobilised
Rewa district administration, along with Chakghat municipal staff and Rapid Action Force teams, reached the worst‑hit pockets before dawn. Crews cleared blocked roads and cut fallen trees to allow ambulances and essential vehicles through. Electricity department teams worked on reconnection and on temporary restoration measures, prioritising hospitals and critical installations.

Calls for faster survey
Local residents and traders urged authorities for a prompt damage assessment and financial relief. “Shops are damaged, stock ruined, roofs gone— we need an official survey so compensation and immediate repairs can begin,” said a shopkeeper in the main market who spoke on condition of anonymity. Neighbourhood committees helped identify the most vulnerable households and coordinated with municipal staff on temporary shelter and roofing material.

Weather context
Meteorological officers in Rewa said the storm was consistent with the region’s late‑season convective activity, when heat and moisture can produce sudden, intense squalls. “This was a short‑duration but high‑intensity thunderstorm with strong winds,” an IMD representative told reporters. Areas along the Rewa–UP border are often more exposed to gust fronts travelling west to east, the officer added.

Ground realities
On inspection rounds through the morning, journalists saw torn corrugated sheets draped over electric conduits, uprooted banyan and neem trees, and sections of roadside fencing crumpled under fallen signboards. Shopkeepers swept rainwater and sludge from doorways while municipal sweepers hauled branches into municipal trucks. Many residents remained anxious about recurring storms over coming days and sought clearer early warnings.

Next steps
District authorities said a formal damage survey would be launched later Friday to estimate losses to houses, businesses and public infrastructure, and to fast‑track relief where needed. Restoration of power and full reopening of the highway were listed as top priorities. “Teams are working to restore normalcy; the survey will help us plan compensation and rebuilding,” a senior district official said.

For now, Chakghat residents are clearing debris and checking on neighbours, while emergency crews continue restoration work. Authorities have asked the public to report fallen live wires or damaged poles to the district control room and to avoid standing near loose signboards.

Maximum temperatures are projected to hit 45°C as dry weather conditions persist across Delhi-NCR, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh.

A Blistering Summer Surge

Large swathes of North and Central India are bracing for prolonged, severe heatwave conditions over the coming week, with the mercury expected to cross the 45 degrees Celsius mark in several vulnerable districts. The India Meteorological Department on Monday issued an orange alert for multiple states, warning citizens to avoid outdoor exposure during peak afternoon hours.

According to IMD scientist Akhilesh Shrivastav, dry and hot westerly winds blowing from the desert regions are trapping heat across the plains, offering no immediate respite from the punishing weather systems.

Orange Alerts Across Multiple States

The weather bureau's regional warning systems have flagged extreme vulnerabilities in Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan. Furthermore, a rare "warm night" warning has been attached to western Rajasthan and western Uttar Pradesh, where minimum temperatures are failing to drop sufficiently after sunset, exacerbating heat stress on local populations.

"In Madhya Pradesh and the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra, severe heatwave conditions are likely to prevail over the next seven days," Shrivastav confirmed in an official update.

Delhi NCR Breaks Season Records

For the national capital region, the situation remains challenging as baseline temperatures continue to hover between 42°C and 43°C. The IMD expects the local temperature in Delhi-NCR to climb up to 45°C within the next 48 hours, prompting local municipal bodies to issue health advisories for construction workers, delivery executives, and traffic personnel.

Public transport commuters in New Delhi were seen covering their faces and carrying water flasks as local markets witnessed a distinct drop in footfall during the late morning and afternoon hours.

Regional Contrades and Next Steps

Interestingly, India is witnessing a highly contrasted weather pattern this week. While North and Central India choke under severe heatwave conditions due to completely dry atmospheric columns, southern states are beginning to register widespread pre-monsoon showers.

Health authorities have advised district administrations to set up dedicated heatstroke relief units in public hospitals and ensure uninterrupted water supply across urban settlements until the current high-pressure heat system dissipates.
