Rain lashed several parts of Delhi on Sunday as a low-pressure area over southwest Uttar Pradesh and adjoining areas continued to influence weather conditions across the national capital. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rainfall at isolated places in Delhi and several neighbouring states on September 6.

The weather system, which had earlier been located over northwest Madhya Pradesh and adjoining southwest Uttar Pradesh, was positioned over southwest Uttar Pradesh and nearby areas on Sunday. The IMD said the system is likely to move east-northeastwards during the next 24 hours. 

IMD issues heavy rain forecast

According to the weather agency, heavy rainfall is very likely at isolated places over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi, as well as East Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand on Sunday.

The forecast comes after another spell of rain affected Delhi-NCR over the past few days, with heavy showers causing waterlogging and traffic disruptions at several locations.

The IMD's latest assessment indicates that the weather system over the region could continue to support rainfall activity across parts of northern India.

Safdarjung records 30 mm rainfall

Delhi's Safdarjung weather station recorded 30 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours preceding the latest observation, according to weather data cited in current reports.

The maximum temperature was recorded at 27.6 degrees Celsius, which was 6.5 degrees below normal. The minimum temperature stood at 24.6 degrees Celsius, around one degree below normal.

Humidity remained high, reaching 98 per cent in observations recorded during both morning and evening hours. 

The rainfall and cloud cover have kept temperatures considerably lower than normal for this time of the year.

Waterlogging reported in several areas

The recent spell of rain has also resulted in water accumulation in parts of the national capital. Areas including Geeta Colony and Akbar Road reported waterlogging during the ongoing wet spell.

Parts of the wider NCR, including Gurugram, have also faced waterlogging and traffic disruptions following heavy rainfall. Authorities have been monitoring vulnerable stretches and working to clear accumulated rainwater. 

The situation has renewed concerns over drainage capacity in low-lying areas, particularly during periods of intense rainfall.

Delhi government monitors drainage situation

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta conducted an inspection of Sadhbhavana Park and adjoining roads on Saturday amid continuing rainfall. She reviewed the waterlogging situation and interacted with officials and field staff regarding drainage arrangements.

Officials were directed to deploy pumps and other necessary resources in waterlogged areas and ensure that accumulated rainwater is removed promptly. 

The administration's focus remains on preventing prolonged waterlogging and reducing inconvenience to commuters during the continuing wet spell.

Weather expected to remain cloudy

The IMD's seven-day forecast indicates that Delhi is likely to experience generally cloudy conditions with moderate rain. The maximum temperature is forecast to reach around 32 degrees Celsius, while the minimum is expected to remain near 25 degrees Celsius. 

The weather is expected to become comparatively drier after September 6. Forecasts for September 7 and 8 indicate maximum temperatures around 34 degrees Celsius, while the IMD outlook carries no warning for those days. 

Rain may continue to affect daily life

The latest spell of rainfall has brought cooler temperatures but has also created challenges for commuters in Delhi-NCR. Waterlogging, slow-moving traffic and difficult road conditions remain concerns in areas receiving heavier showers.

With the IMD forecasting isolated heavy rainfall over Delhi on Sunday, residents in vulnerable areas are likely to remain alert as the weather system moves east-northeastwards.

For the coming days, the focus will remain on rainfall intensity, drainage conditions and the movement of the low-pressure system as authorities continue to monitor the situation.

Delhi woke up to light rain on Sunday morning, bringing relief from the recent heat and humid conditions across several parts of the national capital. The showers also brought down temperatures and gave residents a relatively pleasant start to the day. 

Light rain was reported in isolated parts of Delhi during the morning. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the Safdarjung area recorded mist along with a temperature of 27°C at 8 am. The Ridge area also witnessed light rain accompanied by a thunderstorm and mist, with the temperature recorded at 26°C around 7 am. 

The change in weather offered some relief to residents after warm and humid conditions in the capital. People out for morning walks at Kartavya Path were seen making the most of the cooler conditions as light showers continued in parts of the city. 

Over the previous 24 hours, Delhi had received very light to light rainfall at many places, while moderate rain was recorded at isolated locations along with thunderstorms and lightning. The minimum temperature across the city remained between 23°C and 26°C, while maximum temperatures settled around 34°C to 35°C. 

The latest spell of rain comes amid continuing monsoon activity over parts of northern India. Weather conditions in the capital have remained changeable, with periods of rainfall bringing temporary relief from high temperatures and humidity.

The light showers are also expected to influence morning commuting conditions in some areas. While the rainfall reported so far has been light in several parts of Delhi, residents travelling during periods of rain may encounter wet roads and reduced visibility in places where showers are accompanied by mist or thunderstorms.

The weather department's observations indicate that Delhi has continued to experience rainfall activity along with fluctuations in temperature. The combination of rain, cloud cover and thunderstorms has helped keep temperatures below the levels generally associated with hotter summer conditions.

For Delhi residents, Sunday's showers provided a welcome break from the heat and humidity. The national capital is likely to continue seeing variable weather conditions as monsoon activity persists over the region.

Severe Heatwave Grips North and Central India; IMD Issues Orange Alert

Maximum temperatures are projected to hit 45°C as dry weather conditions persist across Delhi-NCR, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh.

A Blistering Summer Surge

Large swathes of North and Central India are bracing for prolonged, severe heatwave conditions over the coming week, with the mercury expected to cross the 45 degrees Celsius mark in several vulnerable districts. The India Meteorological Department on Monday issued an orange alert for multiple states, warning citizens to avoid outdoor exposure during peak afternoon hours.

According to IMD scientist Akhilesh Shrivastav, dry and hot westerly winds blowing from the desert regions are trapping heat across the plains, offering no immediate respite from the punishing weather systems.

Orange Alerts Across Multiple States

The weather bureau's regional warning systems have flagged extreme vulnerabilities in Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan. Furthermore, a rare "warm night" warning has been attached to western Rajasthan and western Uttar Pradesh, where minimum temperatures are failing to drop sufficiently after sunset, exacerbating heat stress on local populations.

"In Madhya Pradesh and the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra, severe heatwave conditions are likely to prevail over the next seven days," Shrivastav confirmed in an official update.

Delhi NCR Breaks Season Records

For the national capital region, the situation remains challenging as baseline temperatures continue to hover between 42°C and 43°C. The IMD expects the local temperature in Delhi-NCR to climb up to 45°C within the next 48 hours, prompting local municipal bodies to issue health advisories for construction workers, delivery executives, and traffic personnel.

Public transport commuters in New Delhi were seen covering their faces and carrying water flasks as local markets witnessed a distinct drop in footfall during the late morning and afternoon hours.

Regional Contrades and Next Steps

Interestingly, India is witnessing a highly contrasted weather pattern this week. While North and Central India choke under severe heatwave conditions due to completely dry atmospheric columns, southern states are beginning to register widespread pre-monsoon showers.

Health authorities have advised district administrations to set up dedicated heatstroke relief units in public hospitals and ensure uninterrupted water supply across urban settlements until the current high-pressure heat system dissipates.
