Datia Bypoll Countdown Puts Rajendra Bharti Under Pressure as Nomination Deadline Nears

With the nomination deadline for the Datia Assembly by-election fast approaching, the political future of former Congress MLA Rajendra Bharti appears increasingly tied to a pending decision of the Delhi High Court.

The bypoll has already emerged as one of the most closely watched political contests in Madhya Pradesh. While political parties are busy finalising their campaign plans and candidate strategies, uncertainty continues to surround Bharti's eligibility to contest the election.

The Datia seat fell vacant after Bharti's disqualification following his conviction in a case linked to alleged irregularities in a cooperative bank matter. After the conviction led to the loss of his Assembly membership, the Election Commission announced the by-election schedule, setting the stage for a politically significant contest in the Gwalior-Chambal region.

According to the election schedule, the process is already underway and the last date for filing nominations is drawing near. That has increased the urgency around Bharti's legal battle.

Sources familiar with the matter said Bharti has approached the Delhi High Court seeking relief against the conviction that resulted in his disqualification. The outcome of that petition is expected to play a crucial role in determining whether he can enter the electoral fray once again.

For the Congress, the situation presents both a challenge and a strategic dilemma.

Party leaders in the region have continued political preparations while awaiting clarity from the court. If Bharti receives relief before the nomination process concludes, the Congress could back him as its candidate. However, if the legal proceedings do not move in his favour within the available timeframe, the party may have to quickly identify an alternative face for the contest.

The uncertainty has also created intense political activity in Datia, where local workers from both major parties have begun mobilising supporters.

The Bharatiya Janata Party is treating the bypoll as an important electoral battle. Political observers believe the contest carries significance beyond a single Assembly constituency because it could offer an indication of voter sentiment ahead of future political contests in the state.

Datia has traditionally attracted attention due to its political importance in the Gwalior-Chambal belt. Any change in the electoral dynamics of the constituency is closely watched by both the BJP and the Congress.

Bharti has previously questioned the timing of the by-election and raised concerns over the circumstances under which the seat was declared vacant. Those arguments have become part of the broader political discussion surrounding the bypoll, though the legal proceedings remain separate from the electoral process.

Meanwhile, election officials are continuing preparations according to the announced schedule. Authorities have not indicated any change in the programme and all procedural activities are moving forward as planned.

Political analysts say every passing day is becoming increasingly important for Bharti because electoral timelines leave little room for delay. Even a favourable court order would need to come before key deadlines to have a practical impact on candidate selection and campaign planning.

For now, the focus remains firmly on the Delhi High Court, where the next developments could reshape the contest before nominations close. Until that clarity emerges, speculation is likely to continue in Datia's political circles, with both supporters and rivals closely monitoring the legal proceedings.

The by-election campaign has not fully gathered momentum yet, but the uncertainty surrounding Rajendra Bharti has already become one of the defining stories of the contest.

High-profile spiritual visit to Datia

DATIA: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath arrived in Madhya Pradesh's Datia district on Saturday morning to offer prayers at the world-renowned Pitambara Peeth. The brief spiritual stopover, however, was marred by operational gridlocks that left hundreds of ordinary devotees stranded outside the temple gates in sweltering heat.

The Chief Minister’s special aircraft touched down at the Datia airstrip at 10:15 AM, from where his high-security convoy moved directly to the temple complex.

Strict security protocols trigger public backlash

In anticipation of the VIP movement, local police and temple administrators enforced an ironclad security protocol. The entire temple premises were completely sealed off to the general public for nearly an hour and a half, disrupting the routine morning darshan cycle.

According to ground-level cues, the restriction was so unyielding that even several traditional temple priests (pandas and pujaris) were barred from entering their designated service areas. As time dragged on, visible frustration mounted among the crowd waiting outside the barricades.

CM Yogi's Datia-Jhansi Itinerary:

┌──────────┬─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐

│ Time │ Event / Operational Milestone │

├──────────┼─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┤

│ 10:15 AM │ Touchdown at Datia airstrip via special aircraft │

│ 10:30 AM │ Reached Pitambara Peeth; performed a 15-minute closed puja │

│ 11:00 AM │ Departed via road network toward neighboring Jhansi district │

│ Weekend │ Scheduled 20-hour halt in Jhansi for ₹1,500 crore project rollouts│

└──────────┴─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘

Stranded devotees voice anger

Speaking to reporters on the ground, Durgesh Bhargava, a devotee who had traveled from Gwalior, expressed dissatisfaction with how the situation was handled, noting that security personnel provided no advance warning about the lockdown.

Another elderly female worshipper recounted arriving early in the morning specifically to beat the intense afternoon heat, only to be forced to wait on the asphalt for over an hour before gates were opened post the CM's departure.

Brief ritual followed by transit to Jhansi

During his 15-minute stay inside the sanctum sanctorum, Adityanath performed elaborate rituals, offering prayers to the deity Goddess Baglamukhi and the historic, Mahabharat-era Vankhandeshwar Mahadev. Top administrative and police brass from the district monitored the venue's security layout.

Immediately after concluding his prayers, the Chief Minister left Datia by road, heading toward Jhansi in Uttar Pradesh, where he is scheduled to undertake a comprehensive 20-hour official tour.

Massive development push in Jhansi

Sources familiar with the matter confirmed that the Bundelkhand region is under a strict security vigil as Adityanath is set to chair a high-level review meeting with top regional bureaucrats.

Additionally, the Chief Minister will be inaugurating and laying the foundation stones for multiple infrastructure and welfare initiatives valued at over ₹1,500 crore.

Frequent political transit hub

The Pitambara Peeth continues to be an essential spiritual stop for the top political brass of Uttar Pradesh. Prior to Adityanath's visit, UP Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya along with a series of cabinet ministers have frequently traveled across the state border to offer prayers at the Datia shrine during critical political cycles.

Major Administrative Reshuffle in Datia: SDM, ADM Among Several Officers Transferred

General Administration Department issues fresh transfer orders; former officials return to key positions as district administration undergoes restructuring

A significant administrative reshuffle has been carried out in Madhya Pradesh's Datia district, with the General Administration Department transferring several senior officials and assigning new responsibilities across key departments. The latest orders are expected to bring notable changes to the district's administrative structure, while also marking the return of several officers who have previously served in Datia.

Among the major changes, Datia Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) and Joint Collector Lokendra Saral has been transferred to Indore. Saral had assumed charge as SDM only about a month ago and was also handling responsibilities related to multiple government departments in his role as Joint Collector.

His wife, Joint Collector Shruti Agrawal, has also been transferred to Indore. The officer couple had been serving in Datia for nearly a year. In another key development, Additional District Magistrate (ADM) Mahendra Kavche has been transferred to Bhopal, while Datia Janpad Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Vineet Tripathi has been posted to Sehore.

The transfer list also includes Medical College Pathology Department Head Dr. Arjun Singh, who has been given additional responsibility as the temporary Dean of a medical institution in Damoh.

Familiar Faces Return

The reshuffle has also brought back several officials who previously served in Datia. One of the notable names is Dhananjay Mishra, Additional Chief Executive Officer (ACEO) of the District Panchayat, who has been reposted to Datia. Mishra was transferred to Sidhi in 2025 and is now returning to the district.

Tehsildar Deepak Shukla has also made a comeback. He had earlier served in Datia before being transferred in 2018 and will now rejoin the district administration.

To fill the vacancy created by Mahendra Kavche's transfer, Bhupendra Kushwaha has been appointed as the new ADM of Datia. Kushwaha is familiar with the district administration, having previously served as a Tehsildar in Datia.

New Officers Assigned Key Roles

The latest administrative changes also introduce several new faces into the district's governance framework. Deputy Collector Surbhi Jain, a 2025-batch state administrative service officer, has been posted to Datia and is expected to take charge of important administrative responsibilities.

Meanwhile, Shivangi Pandey, who was serving as Chief Municipal Officer (CMO) in Beohari Nagar Parishad of Shahdol district, has been appointed as the permanent CMO of Bhander in Datia district.

Officials believe these appointments will strengthen administrative functioning and support ongoing development and governance initiatives in the district.

Collector Reviews New Team

Following the large-scale reshuffle, Datia Collector Swapanil Wankhede has reportedly begun reviewing the district's newly constituted administrative team. Sources indicate that the Collector has been conducting departmental meetings and assessing the experience, performance records, and work styles of newly posted officials.

Administrative sources suggest that the exercise aims to ensure a smooth transition and maintain continuity in governance while strengthening service delivery across departments.

The transfer orders are expected to have a direct impact on administrative operations in Datia over the coming months. With a mix of experienced returning officers and newly appointed officials, the district administration is preparing for a fresh phase of governance and implementation of development initiatives.

Observers note that such periodic reshuffles are a routine part of administrative management and are often intended to improve efficiency, accountability, and coordination within government departments.

Datia Minor Rape Case: Accused Booked for Repeated Assault on 17-Year-Old

Datia (Madhya Pradesh): Police in Datia district have registered a case against a man accused of raping a 17-year-old girl twice, using morphed photographs and videos to blackmail her and issuing death threats to her family.

The incidents came to light late on Thursday night when the minor, accompanied by her parents, reached Basai police station and lodged a complaint. Police have booked the accused, identified as Veeru Ahirwar, under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Teams have been formed to trace and arrest him.

First Assault in Fields

According to the complaint, the first incident occurred nearly two months ago. The girl was on her way to the fields in the afternoon when the accused allegedly approached her from behind on a secluded path. He overpowered her, dragged her into nearby bushes, and assaulted her.

When she resisted, he allegedly slapped her and threatened to kill both her and her father. The accused also captured photographs and videos of the act on his mobile phone. Fearing social stigma and the threats, the teenager chose to remain silent at the time.

Second Incident on May 18

The nightmare continued on May 18. The girl alleged that Veeru Ahirwar stopped her again on a village path and, using the previously recorded photos and videos as leverage, threatened to make them viral if she did not comply. He then allegedly raped her for the second time.

Even after the second assault, the girl initially hesitated to speak out due to continuous threats from the accused. Sources familiar with the case said the family faced immense pressure and fear of reputational damage in the close-knit rural community.

Family Breaks Silence

The situation escalated when the accused reportedly continued issuing threats to the family, including dire warnings against the girl’s father. This persistent intimidation finally compelled the minor to confide in her parents. On Thursday evening, the family decided to approach the police.

“Initial reports indicate that the family had been living in fear for weeks,” a police officer said, requesting anonymity. The complaint was formally registered late Thursday night at Basai police station.

Police Action Underway

Datia police have taken the matter seriously given the minor’s age and the repeated nature of the crime. A senior officer confirmed that multiple teams are actively searching for Veeru Ahirwar. “We have registered the case and are investigating all angles. The accused will be arrested soon,” the officer added.

Forensic and medical examination of the victim has been initiated as per protocol in POCSO cases. Police are also examining the mobile phone records and any possible digital evidence related to the alleged blackmail material.

Impact on Local Community

The case has sent ripples of concern through the villages under Basai police station limits. Residents expressed shock over the repeated assaults and the use of digital blackmail, a growing concern in rural areas with increasing mobile phone penetration.

Women’s rights activists in the region have called for swift action and better safety measures for girls traveling on isolated paths, especially in agricultural areas. Such incidents often highlight the vulnerabilities faced by young girls in parts of Madhya Pradesh despite various government schemes for women’s safety.

Background and Similar Cases

Datia, located in the northern part of Madhya Pradesh, has witnessed occasional reports of crimes against women, though officials maintain that the overall law and order situation remains under control. The district administration has in the past run awareness campaigns regarding POCSO and cyber blackmail.

This case once again brings into focus the challenges of timely reporting in sexual assault cases involving minors, where fear of social ostracization often delays justice.

Police have appealed to the public to provide any information regarding the whereabouts of the accused. They have assured complete protection to the victim and her family.

As the investigation progresses, authorities are expected to update on further developments in the coming days. The minor is currently being provided necessary counselling and support through district authorities.
