Petrol And Diesel Will No Longer Be Sold In Bottles

State Government Imposes Strict Rules To Stop Hoarding And Black Marketing

In a major step to prevent hoarding and black marketing of fuel, the state government has issued strict new guidelines regarding the sale of petrol and diesel. Under the new order, petrol pumps across the state, including Bastar region, will no longer be allowed to sell fuel in bottles, drums, or jerrycans without official permission.

According to the directive issued by the Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Protection Department, fuel will now be supplied only directly into vehicle tanks at all retail outlets operated by oil companies and parallel marketing agencies. The government has warned petrol pump operators that strict legal action will be taken against anyone found violating the order. Officials say the move is aimed at controlling illegal storage, black marketing, and unauthorized resale of fuel during rising demand and fluctuating prices.

Strict Action Against Violators

Authorities have clearly stated that selling petrol or diesel in containers such as bottles, drums, or plastic cans without authorization will be treated as illegal fuel distribution. The government order mentions that any violation will invite action under the Motor Spirit and High Speed Diesel (Regulation of Supply, Distribution and Prevention of Malpractices) Order, 2005, along with provisions of the Essential Commodities Act, 1955.

Officials believe the decision became necessary after reports of illegal stockpiling and unauthorized fuel sales surfaced in different districts. Concerns had also increased following recent hikes in petrol and diesel prices, which triggered panic buying and black market activities in several areas.

Fuel To Be Supplied Only In Vehicle Tanks

Under the new rules, petrol pump operators must ensure that fuel is filled directly into the fuel tanks of vehicles only. Staff members have been instructed not to provide petrol or diesel in loose containers unless proper permission documents are presented.

Authorities say this system will help track fuel distribution more effectively and reduce the chances of illegal resale. Officials added that the decision is also important from a safety perspective, as improper storage of petrol and diesel in homes or commercial areas can lead to fire hazards and accidents.

Farmers Given Relief Under New Policy

While imposing restrictions, the state government has also provided relief for farmers and essential public works. The order states that diesel can still be supplied for agricultural activities related to Rabi crop harvesting and Kharif season preparations. Farmers who require fuel for tractors, irrigation pumps, or agricultural machinery will continue receiving diesel under regulated procedures.

Apart from agriculture, fuel supply in containers will also be allowed for government-approved infrastructure projects such as railway operations, road construction work, and building construction projects. District collectors will also have the authority to identify additional government works eligible for exemption under the new rules.

Hospitals And Essential Services Exempted

The government has ensured that emergency and essential services are not affected by the restriction. Hospitals, mobile tower operators, and other critical service providers will still be allowed to obtain fuel in drums or jerrycans when necessary. However, they must first apply for permission through the local Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM).

After verification and approval by authorities, petrol pump operators will be allowed to supply fuel while following all required safety protocols. Officials said the permission system has been designed to maintain transparency while ensuring uninterrupted functioning of emergency services.

Rising Fuel Concerns Behind Government Decision

The latest order comes at a time when fuel prices have been witnessing repeated increases across the country. Authorities fear that price hikes often encourage illegal fuel storage and black marketing by traders and middlemen seeking extra profits.

In recent weeks, reports of panic buying and unauthorized fuel sales had emerged from multiple districts. Long queues were also seen at several petrol pumps after rumors regarding supply shortages spread among the public. The government believes the new restrictions will help stabilize fuel distribution and discourage illegal practices.

Petrol Pump Operators Asked To Follow Safety Norms

Petrol pump owners have been instructed to strictly comply with the guidelines and maintain proper records of fuel sales wherever exemptions are granted. Officials warned that surprise inspections may be conducted to ensure compliance. Any operator found violating the rules may face suspension of license, legal penalties, or criminal proceedings.

Authorities have appealed to citizens not to engage in panic buying or illegal storage of fuel. Consumers have also been asked to report black marketing or suspicious fuel sales to local administration officials immediately. The government maintains that the restrictions are temporary preventive measures aimed at maintaining fair fuel distribution and protecting consumers from exploitation.
