Petrol Diesel Prices Hiked Despite Global Oil Drop

Petrol and diesel prices rose again on May 25, 2026, with Delhi petrol crossing ₹100 per litre. Experts explain why domestic fuel rates are increasing even as global crude prices fall below $100 per barrel.

Fuel prices surge in major cities as oil marketing companies recover losses from earlier volatility

State-run oil companies increased petrol and diesel prices across the country on Monday, marking the fourth hike in just 11 days. Petrol prices rose by up to ₹2.61 per litre and diesel by up to ₹2.71 per litre, pushing rates to fresh highs in several cities.

In the national capital, petrol now costs ₹102.12 per litre, breaching the ₹100-mark for the first time in four years. Diesel is priced at ₹95.20 per litre. In Mumbai, petrol has climbed to ₹111.21 per litre, reflecting the sharpest impact in metropolitan markets.

The latest revision has left consumers puzzled, especially as global Brent crude oil prices have eased below $100 per barrel after touching highs of $126 during recent geopolitical tensions.

Why prices are rising amid global decline

Experts point to a clear disconnect between international crude benchmarks and domestic retail prices. The primary reason, they say, is the need to recover substantial under-recoveries accumulated by oil marketing companies when global prices spiked.

Financial Expert explained that during the peak of the US-Iran conflict, Indian companies absorbed heavy losses to shield consumers from immediate price shocks. “Oil companies were losing ₹10 to ₹14 on every litre of petrol and ₹25 to ₹30 on diesel,” he noted. With global prices now softening, firms are gradually adjusting retail rates to offset those losses and maintain operational viability.

Daily dynamic pricing and its pauses

India follows a daily dynamic pricing mechanism under which fuel rates are expected to be revised every morning at 6 AM, factoring in international crude costs and rupee-dollar exchange rates. However, companies often pause adjustments during periods of extreme volatility.

Central and state taxes, along with dealer commissions, make up a significant portion of the final pump price. This layered structure often delays the pass-through of global price movements to Indian consumers.

Time lag in crude procurement

Another key factor is the time lag in actual oil imports. India’s crude oil basket, a weighted average of various grades sourced from multiple countries, averaged $107.96 per barrel in May 2026. Although Brent futures dropped to around $98.59 on Monday morning following positive signals from the US-Iran peace process, Indian refiners are still processing shipments purchased at higher rates, including elevated war-risk insurance and shipping costs through the Strait of Hormuz.

Past instances of inverse movement

This inverse trend is not new. Similar patterns emerged during the 2022 Russia-Ukraine conflict when global prices spiked and later moderated, but domestic rates were adjusted only after a prolonged freeze linked to state elections. In 2020, despite crude prices crashing during the COVID-19 pandemic, the government raised excise duties, keeping retail prices stable or higher.

During the recent 2026 Iran-related tensions, prices were held steady initially due to electoral considerations before sharp upward revisions followed.

Impact on households and economy

The repeated hikes are adding to household budgets already strained by inflation. Transport operators, farmers, and small businesses are expected to face higher operational costs, which could eventually feed into higher prices of essential commodities.

Economists warn that sustained high fuel prices may affect rural demand and overall economic recovery momentum if not balanced carefully.

What lies ahead

Oil marketing companies are likely to continue calibrated increases to clear backlog losses. However, any further softening in global crude prices or strengthening of the rupee could moderate future revisions. Consumers will be closely watching the daily price announcements in the coming weeks.

The government has not issued any immediate statement on the latest round of hikes. Industry sources indicate that the current adjustment cycle aims to align retail prices more closely with actual import costs without triggering sharp one-time jumps.

Petrol at ₹105 drives Chhattisgarh EV demand surge

Repeated petrol price hikes, which have pushed rates past ₹105 per litre in the capital, are driving a clear shift in consumer preference across the state. Automobile dealers report a 20-30% increase in enquiries and sales of electric two-wheelers over the past few weeks, marking one of the sharpest upticks in demand in recent months.

According to officials and dealers, middle-class families and daily commuters are leading this change. With petrol retailing at around ₹105.19 per litre in Raipur—and crossing ₹106 in Surguja—the operating economics of petrol scooters have worsened significantly.

“People who travel 30 to 50 kilometres daily are now calculating their monthly fuel bills, and they don’t like what they see,” said a dealer in Raipur. “An electric scooter halves their running costs, even with today’s charging rates.”

Fuel shock accelerates EV shift

The price surge in Chhattisgarh is part of a broader national trend. Oil marketing companies have raised petrol and diesel prices three times in just eight days, cumulatively adding nearly ₹5 per litre since mid-May. The hikes are a direct consequence of rising global crude prices triggered by geopolitical tensions in West Asia.

Experts believe the current hike cycle is unlikely to end soon, with oil companies still reporting under-recoveries. This sustained pressure on fuel prices has fundamentally strengthened the long-term value proposition of battery-powered vehicles.

State sees steady growth in EV registrations

Chhattisgarh has recorded steady progress in EV adoption over the past year. According to the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), the penetration of electric two-wheelers in the central region, including Chhattisgarh, has risen to 7%. Data sourced from the Ministry of Road Transport indicates that over 12,600 electric vehicles were sold in the state in FY 2024-25, successfully meeting the state government’s policy targets for that period.

Subsidies and new charging rules

The state government has amended the Chhattisgarh Land Development Rules, 1984, to accelerate the installation of EV charging stations. The new provisions allow charging points to be set up in residential colonies, markets, industrial areas, and district centres. Furthermore, at least 20% of parking capacity in new buildings must be reserved for EVs, along with dedicated charging points.

Under the state’s EV policy, buyers currently get a subsidy of 10% of the vehicle’s ex-showroom price, capped at ₹1 lakh for two-wheelers. Additionally, EVs enjoy a 50% exemption on lifetime road tax, further lowering the total cost of ownership.

Dealers report changing buyer mindset

The rising demand is visible across showrooms. Hemant Goel, an electric vehicle dealer in Raipur, said the shift is not just about fuel savings. “Maintenance on an electric scooter is minimal compared to a petrol vehicle. No engine oil, no clutch, no gearbox issues. People understand this now,” he stated. Lower noise and vibration also make EVs a preferred choice in congested city traffic.

Challenges remain in infrastructure

Despite the positive trend, challenges persist. A March 2026 report by the Ministry of Heavy Industries flagged Chhattisgarh's lagging charging infrastructure. Although 607 charging stations have been installed in the last five years, only 524 are operational. Neighbouring states like Madhya Pradesh and Odisha currently have significantly higher numbers of functional public chargers.

Nonetheless, the government has now mandated that EV charging stations be installed every 25 km on national highways, a move expected to ease range anxiety for long-distance travellers.

Balancing traditional and electric mobility may be the way forward for now. While electric scooters are becoming the go-to option for city commutes, petrol vehicles remain more practical for long-distance travel and rural areas. But with battery technology improving rapidly and charging networks expected to expand, the electric wave in Chhattisgarh appears poised for sustained momentum.
