A 12-year-old Class 6 student was killed after a speeding truck ran her over in Gunderdehi village of Chhattisgarh’s Mohla-Manpur-Ambagarh Chowki district, triggering a dramatic 55-km police chase in which the driver allegedly kept breaking barricades to escape arrest.

The victim, identified as Poonam, was standing by the roadside when the truck hit her on Friday morning. Police said the driver, identified as Devi Singh from Uttar Pradesh, appeared to be heavily intoxicated and fled the scene in a desperate attempt to avoid being caught.

What followed was a high-speed chase that moved through multiple police checkpoints. Officers first tried to stop the truck in the Mohla area, but the driver rammed through the barricades and sped away. A second blockade near Manpur was also broken through, and police personnel narrowly escaped being hit in the process.

According to police, the truck was moving at around 120 kmph during the escape. The driver reportedly showed no sign of slowing down, even as teams from several police stations joined the pursuit. The chase created panic on the highway, with motorists and bystanders watching the vehicle tear through barricades and flee ahead of the police convoy.

The pursuit finally ended near Korkoti, between the Manpur and Kohka police station limits, when the truck went out of control and veered off the road into a roadside ditch. Police then overpowered the driver and took him into custody. He also suffered injuries during the crash and was taken to Manpur hospital for treatment.

Poonam’s death sparked anger in Gunderdehi village. Residents placed her body on the road and blocked traffic, demanding strict action against the accused driver and justice for the family. The protest brought movement on the stretch to a halt until senior administrative and police officers reached the spot and held talks with villagers.

The officials assured the crowd that action would be taken, after which the blockade was withdrawn. The body was later sent to Ambagarh Chowki hospital for post-mortem.

Police are now examining the circumstances of the crash, the driver’s alleged drunken condition, and the sequence of barricade breaches during the escape. Officers said the viral video of the chase is also being reviewed as part of the investigation.

The incident has once again raised concerns about drunken driving, highway safety and the risks police face during vehicle checks on busy routes. Locals said the case should send a strong message, especially when a child has lost her life and officers had to risk being run over while stopping the accused.

The vehicle rampaged through a 12-kilometre stretch, hitting pedestrians, handcarts, and two-wheelers, leaving multiple people injured.

The drama, which lasted for over an hour, finally ended after police teams from three different stations coordinated a high-stakes chase to corner the vehicle.

Midnight Birthday Party Turns Chaotic

According to initial reports, the incident began between 9:00 PM and 9:30 PM on Saturday. A group of youths, identified as Sarva Dubey, Aditya, Tushar Khare, and Sambhav Jaiswal, had gathered in the Bairagarh area to celebrate a birthday.

Sources familiar with the matter said that after consuming alcohol, the group left the venue in a Toyota Hyryder. While Aditya was initially behind the wheel, control of the vehicle was handed over to Sarva Dubey near the railway station. Local authorities confirmed that the driving became highly erratic immediately after the switch.

12-Kilometre Trail of Destruction

What followed was a trail of destruction that spanned across major parts of the city. Moving at a breakneck speed, the car started ramming into everything in its way, starting near Kirti Medical. The vehicle sped through Ashoka Garden, Ayodhya Nagar, Kolar Road, and the Minal residency area.

Eyewitnesses stated that the driver showed no intent of slowing down, knocking over roadside vendors, stationary handcarts, and multiple two-wheelers. "The car was being driven like a weapon. People were jumping off the road to save themselves," a local resident near Ashoka Garden noted.

Police Constable Hit During Rampage

The situation escalated drastically when the speeding vehicle hit a police constable on duty. The injury to the cop immediately triggered a city-wide alert.

Realising the gravity of the situation, control rooms coordinated a joint operation involving personnel from three local police stations. Patrol vehicles began chasing the luxury SUV, trying to block its potential escape routes through the city's arterial roads. After a tense chase covering nearly 12 kilometers, the police successfully boxed in the car near the Minal area.

Angry Crowd Surrounds Vehicle

As soon as the car was forced to a halt, an angry mob of hundreds of locals and commuters surrounded the vehicle. Having witnessed the reckless driving and injuries caused along the route, the crowd attempted to pull the youths out.

The responding police teams had to form a protective ring to rescue the accused from public fury. Local authorities managed to safely detain two of the youths from the spot, while the remaining occupants reportedly fled into the crowd during the commotion.

Investigation Underway Amid Casualties

The exact number of injured citizens is yet to be officially confirmed, though sources indicate the count is high. The victims were rushed to various hospitals across the Ayodhya Nagar and Ashoka Garden sectors for immediate medical attention. As of late Saturday night, no fatalities had been officially reported.

Bajaria Police Station In-charge, Shilpa Gaur, stated that the matter is being treated with utmost seriousness. "The sequence of events points to extreme negligence and endangerment of public life. A detailed investigation is underway, and strict legal action will be taken against all the accused involved," she said.
