Re-polling boost gives saffron party decisive edge in South 24 Parganas seat

With 17 of 21 counting rounds completed by early afternoon, BJP candidate Debangshu has established an commanding lead in West Bengal's Falta constituency, securing over 1.2 lakh votes and opening up a gap of more than 85,000 votes over his nearest rival. The trend suggests the party is poised to breach TMC's 24-year grip on the seat—a significant turnaround in a district where the saffron party has historically struggled.

CPM's Shambhunath Kurmi has consolidated the second position with 35,000 votes, while the narrative took an unusual turn with TMC candidate Jahangir Khan—who had announced days before the re-poll that he would not contest—still registering over 5,000 votes from the ballot.

The Repolling Factor

The surge for BJP appears closely tied to the re-polling conducted on May 21 across all 285 booths following allegations of electoral irregularities during the April 29 polling. Voter participation during the re-poll climbed to 88.13%, nudging past the original 86.71% turnout—a marginal but potentially decisive increase in a closely watched contest.

Election officials had ordered the fresh round after investigators, led by then-observer Subrat Gupta, uncovered evidence of tampering in at least 60 booths. The probe documented allegations that tape had been pasted over the BJP button on electronic voting machines, along with attempts to interfere with CCTV footage at polling stations.

TMC's Withdrawal Complication

Jahangir Khan's public announcement on May 18 that he would step back from the race created procedural ambiguity. He did not file formal written withdrawal documentation, leaving his name and party symbol active on the EVM during re-polling. Despite the announcement reverberating through local media and ground reports, his continued presence on the ballot may have inadvertently affected vote distribution across the opposition.

The situation underscored friction between the ruling party and electoral machinery—something that would eventually contribute to the Election Commission's decision to order fresh elections in the first place.

Breaking a Long Pattern

Falta has remained TMC territory since 2011, when the party first claimed the seat from the then-dominant CPI(M). In 2021, the TMC candidate had cruised to victory with a margin of nearly 40,000 votes. BJP had never crossed the finish line here before.

The South 24 Parganas district, with 31 assembly seats, has seen the saffron party make incremental gains. Excluding Falta, BJP secured 10 victories in the remaining 30 seats during the 2021 elections, consolidating strength in constituencies like Sagar, Kakdwip, and Gosaba, while also making headway in urban pockets including Jadavpur and Tollygunge.

The Larger Picture

If Debangshu's early lead holds through the final four counting rounds, it would mark a watershed moment for BJP in this politically charged corner of Bengal. The seat's vulnerability—exposed through allegations of booth-level manipulation and subsequent re-polling—has created space for the party to challenge TMC's institutional dominance in a district once defined by Left politics.

Local observers say the result could reshape South 24 Parganas arithmetic, particularly given BJP's already strong position in nearby constituencies. Whether it signals broader momentum or remains a localized gain will become clearer as other delayed results trickle in from the state.

The final four rounds of counting were expected to conclude by late evening, with official confirmation of the victor likely before the day ended.
