In Lucknow, intense rainfall on Saturday left roads and residential areas waterlogged. Several parts of the Uttar Pradesh capital were inundated after around three hours of heavy rain, with water reaching nearly two feet in some locations.

Meanwhile, rising river levels have increased the flood threat in several districts of Uttar Pradesh. Rivers including the Ganga, Yamuna and Sharda are reported to be flowing at elevated levels. In Chitrakoot, the rising Mandakini River has affected nearby settlements, with floodwater entering homes in some colonies.

Lucknow Faces Severe Waterlogging

Heavy rainfall brought parts of Lucknow to a standstill, with roads turning into stretches of stagnant water. Residential areas and low-lying locations were among the worst affected.

The latest spell has added to concerns over drainage and waterlogging in the city as the monsoon remains active across Uttar Pradesh.

The rising water levels of several rivers are also being closely monitored, particularly in districts located along major river systems.

Chitrakoot River Levels Rise

In Chitrakoot, the Mandakini River has risen rapidly following heavy rainfall in the region. Floodwater reached colonies located near the river and entered some houses.

The situation has raised concerns for residents living in low-lying areas as rainfall continues in parts of the state.

A bridge connecting areas of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh was also reported to have been submerged, affecting movement in the region.

Odisha Evacuates Over 95,000

Odisha has been among the states most affected by the latest spell of heavy rain. Flooding disrupted normal life across six districts, with more than 95,000 people evacuated from vulnerable and low-lying areas following heavy rainfall during the previous 24 hours.

In Jajpur district, the Kani River rose sharply at Dasarathpur, causing water to accumulate across nearby areas.

An under-construction bridge over the Kani River, a tributary of the Baitarani, was washed away by floodwaters. The incident disrupted connectivity and highlighted the impact of the sudden rise in river levels.

The state remains under a heavy rainfall alert through August 18.

Himachal Reports 183 Deaths

Himachal Pradesh has also witnessed significant monsoon-related losses. According to the latest figures, 183 people have died in rain- and monsoon-related incidents between June 30 and August 15.

As of Saturday evening, 103 roads remained closed across the hill state due to landslides, flooding and other weather-related disruptions.

Authorities continue to monitor vulnerable areas as further rainfall could trigger additional landslides and road blockages.

Army Personnel Missing in Arunachal

In Arunachal Pradesh's Dibang Valley, a cloudburst triggered flash floods and landslides, leaving five Army personnel missing.

The Army said two soldiers were rescued safely, while search and rescue operations continued for the remaining personnel. Multiple Army teams and helicopters have been deployed for relief and search operations.

Elsewhere in Upper Subansiri district, a landslide reportedly killed four people.

Uttarakhand Dam Near Danger Mark

In Uttarakhand, the water level at Tehri Dam has reached the danger mark amid continuing rainfall and rising water levels.

Authorities are keeping a close watch on the situation as heavy rain is expected to continue in parts of the state.

Red Alert in Odisha, Bengal

The weather situation is expected to remain active over the next two days.

For August 17, a red alert has been issued for heavy rain in Odisha and West Bengal. An orange alert is in place for Assam-Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir-Ladakh.

A yellow alert covers Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, central Maharashtra, Konkan-Goa, Sikkim and several northeastern states.

For August 18, an orange alert has been issued for Uttarakhand, Jharkhand and Odisha, while several northern, central and northeastern states remain under yellow alerts.

With rivers already running high in several regions, authorities are expected to maintain close surveillance of flood-prone and landslide-prone areas as the latest monsoon spell continues.

A 14-year-old girl who had been missing from Madhya Pradesh's Gwalior for the past seven days has been safely traced by the police following an intensive search operation involving CCTV surveillance, route mapping, and intelligence inputs. The minor, who had also gone missing two months ago and was recovered from Chitrakoot in Uttar Pradesh, has refused to return home after her rescue and has been temporarily shifted to a One Stop Centre for counselling and care.

According to police officials, the girl disappeared from her residence in Shatabdipuram under the Maharajpura police station limits on June 21. After her family failed to locate her through personal efforts, they approached the police and reported her missing.

Considering the sensitive nature of the case, a dedicated search team was immediately constituted under the supervision of City Superintendent of Police (CSP) Nagendra Singh Sikarwar. Station House Officer (SHO) Yashwant Goyal led the investigation, which included analysing CCTV footage from Shatabdipuram and nearby localities, questioning suspected persons, and activating the local informer network.
Police officials said that the search team carefully tracked the girl's movement through route mapping based on surveillance footage. The coordinated efforts enabled investigators to locate and recover the minor from the outskirts of Gwalior on Sunday evening.

Following her rescue, the girl was brought before the authorities. However, during preliminary interaction, she declined to return to her family. In view of her refusal and to ensure her safety and proper counselling, officials shifted her to a One Stop Centre, where she will remain under the supervision of counsellors and child welfare authorities until further legal and counselling procedures are completed.

During verification and counselling, police discovered that this was not the first time the minor had gone missing. Official records revealed that she had also disappeared on April 1, 2026. On that occasion, the Maharajpura police had launched a similar search operation and successfully traced her to Chitrakoot in Uttar Pradesh before handing her back to her parents.

Investigators are now examining the reasons behind the repeated incidents of the minor leaving home. Authorities are expected to conduct detailed counselling sessions to understand the circumstances that prompted her decision and to determine whether any intervention from child welfare agencies is required.

SHO Yashwant Goyal said that the police acted immediately after receiving the complaint and relied heavily on CCTV footage and route mapping to trace the girl's movements. He added that since the minor has refused to return home, she has been placed in a One Stop Centre to ensure proper counselling and care before any further decision is taken regarding her rehabilitation.

The case highlights the importance of swift police response in missing child cases and underscores the role of counselling and child protection mechanisms in addressing the underlying issues that may lead minors to repeatedly leave their homes.

The mutilated body of Anoop Sen, missing from Rewa since May 18, was recovered from a jungle in Uttar Pradesh’s Karwi. Family members blocked roads demanding immediate arrests in the suspected murder case. Police have launched a joint investigation.

According to police and family sources, Anoop Sen's badly mutilated body was discovered in the dense forest under Raipura police station limits in Karwi. The condition of the remains suggested foul play, leading to immediate suspicions of murder.

Disappearance and Initial Search

Anoop Sen left his home on the morning of May 18, informing his family that he was heading to Baikunthpur along with his friend Yashwant Chaturvedi. That was the last time his family heard from him. Soon after, his mobile phone was switched off, and all attempts to contact him failed.

Worried family members lodged a missing person complaint at Rewa Kotwali police station the same day. As days passed without any trace, the family grew increasingly anxious.

Mobile Location Provides Crucial Lead

During the investigation, police traced Anoop’s last mobile location to the vicinity of Rajapur village near Karwi in Uttar Pradesh. Rewa police then coordinated with their counterparts in Karwi. A search operation was launched in the forested area, where the body was eventually recovered.

Identification proved challenging due to the severe condition of the body. However, family members confirmed it was Anoop based on the clothes and shoes he was wearing when he left home. Police have collected DNA samples for further verification.

Family Points Fingers at Accused

Anoop Sen worked as a security guard with a company called KSS. His family has directly accused three individuals — Yashwant Chaturvedi, Vivek Tiwari, and Vandana Tiwari — of involvement in his murder. They claim police had prior suspicion on the trio but failed to act swiftly.

“Anup had gone with Yashwant. We had informed the police about our doubts earlier, but no one took it seriously,” a family member said during the protest.

Protesters Demand Justice

By late Tuesday evening, angry relatives and locals blocked the road in Rewa, raising slogans and demanding immediate arrest of the accused and a fair probe. The chakkajam caused significant traffic disruption in the area. Senior police officers reached the spot and persuaded the protesters to disperse after assuring them of strict action.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the quiet Mohalla, with many residents expressing concern over rising cases of missing persons and delayed police response in the district.

The family has appealed for a speedy and transparent investigation, fearing that delays could lead to evidence tampering. They have also demanded that the case be transferred to a specialized unit if needed.
