Massive wildlife casualties reported in Khairagarh and Kanker due to severe heatstroke; Raipur braces for peak temperatures amid Chhattisgarh heatwave.

A severe heatwave continues to sweep across Chhattisgarh, triggering a major environmental and wildlife crisis in the state. Extreme temperatures over the past 48 hours have led to the deaths of scores of wild animals and birds, including national birds and bats, across multiple districts. Local authorities and forest department teams have stepped up monitoring near natural water bodies as rural pockets bear the brunt of the intensifying summer.

Severe Casualties in Forests

In Khairagarh district, a tragic scene unfolded in the Dallikholi-Lachhna forest range where a patrol team spotted several animal carcasses near a depleting water hole. Forest officials confirmed the recovery of carcasses of one peacock, two peahens, and three Asian palm civets, alongside nearly 15 other birds.

The Khairagarh Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Pankaj Rajput, stated that primary indicators point toward extreme heatstroke and severe dehydration. However, forest teams are also examining internal organs to completely rule out any possibility of deliberate poisoning near the water source.

Hundreds of Bats Perish

The impact of the intense Chhattisgarh heatwave has been particularly devastating for nocturnal species. In Sarona village, located in Kanker district, local residents woke up to find approximately 500 bats dead beneath large trees.

This follows a similar incident in the Pali region of Korba district just two days prior, where over 200 bats succumbed to the rising mercury. Ground reports suggest that rapidly drying canopies and intense daytime heat are giving these animals no room to cool down.

Regional Temperature Surge

The regional meteorological center noted that dry weather conditions coupled with westerly winds have pushed maximum temperatures well above normal limits. Rajnandgaon recorded the highest temperature in the state at a blistering 45.5°C over the last 24 hours. Meanwhile, Ambikapur registered the lowest minimum temperature at 27.6°C.

Raipur Braces for Peak Heat

The state capital, Raipur, is currently facing some of its harshest summer days. Local weather forecasting units issued an alert warning that daytime temperatures in Raipur are highly likely to breach the 45°C mark today.

Morning commuters reported empty streets by noon as hot winds made outdoor movement difficult. Night-time temperatures are also refusing to drop significantly, staying around the 30°C mark, offering little relief to residents.

Cyclonic Systems to Bring Rain

Meteorologists are tracking multiple weather systems that could bring temporary relief from the grueling Chhattisgarh heatwave. According to the weather department, an upper-air cyclonic circulation is currently active over southern Bihar and adjoining areas. Additionally, a trough line extends from southern Bihar down to the northern Andhra Pradesh coast.

These active systems, combined with another cyclonic circulation over the west-central Bay of Bengal, are expected to alter wind patterns significantly by May 29.

Relief Forecast and Advisories

The Meteorological Department has predicted a shift in weather from May 29 onwards, with thunderstorms and light to moderate rainfall expected in central and southern Chhattisgarh. High-speed winds reaching up to 40-50 km/h and lightning strikes are also anticipated during this transition phase.

In the interim, agricultural scientists have issued urgent advisories for rural communities. Farmers growing rabi maize, banana, and papaya have been asked to undertake light irrigation post-weeding to shield crops from thermal stress, while harvesting of remaining wheat and gram crops is being fast-tracked.
