Crumbling roads, damaged pipelines and choking dust have pushed Bodabag residents to the brink — a chakka jam warning now hangs over the area unless authorities act fast

Anger Boils Over in Bodabag

Residents and traders of Bodabag locality in Rewa city have reached a breaking point. Months of deteriorating roads, uncontrolled dust pollution, and fears of sewage mixing into drinking water have finally pushed the community to issue a public ultimatum — fix the problems or face a peaceful chakka jam at Ravidas Chowraha on Sunday.

The warning came after repeated complaints to civic authorities went unacknowledged, locals said. What began as a pothole problem has now snowballed into a multi-layered civic crisis affecting daily life, health, and livelihoods across the area.

Road Has Collapsed in Stretches

The asphalt stretch running from Neem Chowraha to the bypass, once laid at significant public cost, has been reduced to rubble. Residents allege that relentless heavy vehicle movement — largely construction traffic from ongoing bypass work — has torn up the road surface beyond basic repair.

In several sections, the road has visibly caved in. The subsidence has damaged the sewer main line and chambers installed underneath, infrastructure that reportedly cost crores of rupees. According to locals, drainage channels and drinking water pipelines have snapped at multiple points due to the ground giving way.

Contaminated Water a Growing Fear

The broken pipeline situation has triggered health anxiety among residents. With sewage lines and drinking water pipes running in close proximity, the risk of cross-contamination is no longer theoretical — people say they are already seeing signs of discoloured or foul-smelling water in parts of the locality.

"There's constant worry about what's coming out of the tap," said homemaker Sunita Mishra. "With children and elderly people at home, we can't afford to take chances."

Health workers and residents both flagged that the situation, if unaddressed, could lead to waterborne disease outbreaks in the coming weeks, particularly as summer heat intensifies.

Dust Clouds Choke the Locality

Adding to the misery, the bypass construction company reportedly filled road craters with loose soil rather than proper repair material. The result: thick clouds of dust hang over Bodabag through most of the day.

Elderly residents, asthma patients, infants and young children have been the worst affected. Several families said they have reduced outdoor movement, keeping windows shut through the afternoon hours. The noise and vibration from passing heavy vehicles have compounded the distress.

Traders Count Their Losses

Local shopkeeper Rajesh Gupta said the road condition has driven customers away. "Dust settles on everything — goods, displays, food items," he said. "Footfall has dropped and we've complained multiple times without any result."

Other traders echoed similar concerns, noting that the combination of inaccessible roads and poor air quality had made it difficult to operate businesses normally. Some said they were considering joining the protest if the situation did not improve before Sunday.

What Residents Are Demanding

Community members have put forward a clear set of demands: immediate re-carpeting of the damaged road, repair of broken drainage channels and drinking water pipelines, fixed time-windows for heavy vehicle movement through residential zones, and regular water sprinkling for dust suppression.

They have also called for accountability — action against the officials and agencies responsible for the neglect. Resident Ashok Malani warned that if no resolution comes, the community would not stop at a chakka jam. "We will move court if we have to," he said.
