Rain, Thunderstorms Lash Several MP Districts; Dust Storms Hit Indore, Dewas

Several parts of Madhya Pradesh experienced pre-monsoon showers and strong winds on Monday, offering much-needed relief from the intense summer heat even as dust storms disrupted normal life in some western districts.

Districts including Shivpuri, Tikamgarh, Guna, Sehore, and Ujjain received moderate to heavy rainfall at different intervals. In contrast, Indore, Dewas, and Mhow witnessed strong dust-laden winds that reduced visibility and caused minor damage.

Rain brings respite in eastern and northern MP

In Tikamgarh, strong winds started around 10:30 am followed by rainfall that continued intermittently. Guna saw a sharp spell of rain around 11:30 am that lasted nearly 10 minutes, with reports of showers also in Bamori and Kumbhraj areas.

Sehore received steady rain between 12 pm and 1:30 pm. Tragically, two goats were electrocuted in Chanakyapuri Colony after lightning struck an electricity distribution pole. Hail was also reported in the Amalaha Sonda area of the district.

Western MP battles dust storms

While some regions got rain, western Madhya Pradesh dealt with dusty conditions. In Indore, clouds gathered by afternoon followed by strong gusts of wind. A dust whirlwind was reported in Kanadiya area. Similar dusty winds affected the Rau bypass in Mhow, causing inconvenience to drivers.

In Dewas, a strong dust storm uprooted a tree on the Bhopal road and tore banners and posters along main routes. Agar Malwa also saw a dust storm followed by light rain, with a hardware shop shutter blown away on Baijnath Mahadev Road.

Other districts report scattered activity

Betul received rain with strong winds after 2 pm. Shajapur’s Akodia area saw brief showers around 2:20 pm. Satna experienced 20 minutes of heavy rain, while Rajgarh’s Khilchipur, Machalpur, and Chapiheda received moderate rainfall for nearly an hour. Ujjain also recorded strong winds followed by rain in the afternoon, bringing down the humidity.

In Mandla, intermittent rain since morning cooled the atmosphere significantly in both urban and rural pockets. Dhar’s Pithampur area saw clouds and strong winds after a sunny morning.

Monsoon arrival likely delayed

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated that the southwest monsoon, which normally reaches Kerala by June 1, is yet to make landfall this year. Consequently, its arrival in Madhya Pradesh — usually expected around June 15 — may be delayed by a week.

Officials suggest the monsoon could enter the state between June 20 and 22. The current pre-monsoon spells are being attributed to western disturbances and local convective activity.

Impact on daily life and agriculture

The scattered rainfall has brought down day temperatures in several places, including Bhopal, where a noticeable drop provided relief to residents. Farmers welcomed the showers as they prepare fields for the upcoming kharif season, though officials have cautioned against expecting uniform rain across the state.

Traffic was briefly affected in some areas due to strong winds and reduced visibility. Local authorities have advised people to stay indoors during dust storms and avoid open areas during thunderstorms.

Next spell expected soon

The Meteorological Centre Bhopal has forecast more such spells of rain and thunderstorms in the coming days in many parts of the state. Maximum temperatures are likely to hover between 38-42°C in most districts, with a further drop expected in areas that receive good rainfall.

As the state waits for the full monsoon, these pre-monsoon activities continue to provide intermittent relief from the summer heat.
