In a major crackdown on the illegal liquor trade, Managawan police in Madhya Pradesh's Rewa district seized 500 bottles of country-made liquor from a Bolero vehicle and arrested one person allegedly involved in its transportation. The operation was carried out as part of an ongoing campaign against narcotics and illicit liquor across the district.

Police said the seized consignment comprised 10 cartons containing 500 bottles of country-made plain liquor. The liquor and the vehicle have a combined estimated value of ₹4.45 lakh.

Vehicle Intercepted Following Tip-Off

According to police, officials received specific information that a white Bolero carrying a large quantity of illegal country liquor was moving through the Managawan Basti Road area for illegal distribution.

Acting swiftly on the input, a police team laid a trap and intercepted the vehicle. During the search, officers recovered 10 cartons filled with country-made plain liquor from inside the vehicle. The liquor was immediately seized, and the vehicle was taken into police custody.

Accused Arrested on the Spot

The police arrested Mohammad Tauheed (36), a resident of Ward No. 10 in Raipur Karchuliyan, in connection with the case. An FIR has been registered against the accused at Managawan Police Station under Crime No. 407/2026.

Police booked the accused under Section 34(2) of the Madhya Pradesh Excise Act, which deals with the possession and transportation of liquor beyond the prescribed legal limit.

Liquor and Vehicle Worth ₹4.45 Lakh Seized

Additional Superintendent of Police Sandeep Mishra said that the police recovered approximately 500 bottles of country-made plain liquor valued at around ₹45,000. The Bolero vehicle bearing registration number MP-04-CT-0809, valued at nearly ₹4 lakh, was also confiscated during the operation.

The total value of the seized property has been estimated at ₹4.45 lakh.

Supply Chain Under Investigation

Investigators are now trying to determine the origin of the seized liquor and identify the intended destination of the consignment. Police are also examining whether the accused was acting independently or was part of a larger interstate or regional liquor smuggling network.

Officials said further investigation is underway to identify other individuals involved in the illegal supply chain and trace the source of the consignment.

Authorities say he had been on their radar for some time, with multiple complaints of illegal liquor sales piling up against him.

Tip-Off Led to Arrest

Acting on information from a local informer, a police team moved in and cordoned off the area near Shaheed Smarak Bhavan's parking. Khan was caught on the spot. During a search, officers recovered 36 pouva of Goa English liquor — amounting to 6.48 bulk litres — along with Rs 500 in cash and a Honda Activa scooter bearing registration number CG 04 MK 8657. The total value of seized material has been estimated at Rs 24,820, with the liquor alone valued at around Rs 4,320.

A Pattern of Evasion

What set this case apart, according to Maudahapara police, was Khan's deliberate effort to stay ahead of law enforcement. Instead of operating from a fixed point, he had shifted to selling from different locations around the area — a move the police say was a calculated attempt to dodge detection after pressure from ongoing surveillance mounted. Officers had also installed CCTV cameras at multiple spots to track suspicious activity. The strategy, however, ultimately failed as an informer's tip gave police the lead they needed.

No Papers, No Licence

When questioned, Khan could not produce any valid licence or documentation to justify possessing or selling liquor. Police then formally registered a case under Section 34(2) of the Excise Act and placed him under arrest.

Authorities note that Khan is a known habitual offender in the locality, and complaints against him had persisted over a considerable period before this arrest was made possible through sustained ground-level monitoring.

According to police sources, information from a confidential informant early on Tuesday prompted officers to set up a checkpoint on the road approaching Katra. Police said the driver, identified as Siddharth Singh, was taken into custody at the scene. The vehicle and the seized liquor were impounded, and an offence under the state excise laws has been registered. Initial questioning reportedly yielded limited details, but investigators are continuing custodial enquiries.

Value and identification
Senior officials estimated the retail value of the confiscated liquor at roughly Rs 1.12 lakh. The vehicle’s registration was confirmed by officers at the checkpoint and recorded in FIR documents, a police official stated. No other persons were arrested in the immediate action.

Contractor link under probe
Additional Superintendent of Police Sandeep Mishra told reporters that the driver, during preliminary questioning, claimed the cargo belonged to a contractor and was being transported on their instructions. “He has indicated the consignment was for a contractor,” Mishra said, adding that investigators are probing that lead and tracing the consignment’s origin.

Police teams are examining transport documents recovered from the vehicle and pursuing leads to identify others who may be involved in the alleged illegal movement. 29 cartons of illegal liquor seized from a Swift car; police say consignment was meant for supply to dhabas and grocery shops in tribal belt.

Early Monday morning, police in Khalwa town carried out a major seizure of illegal liquor, arresting a dhaba owner who is the nephew of a local representative of a Union minister. Around 290 litres of liquor were found in his car.

The arrest has brought fresh focus back on the network of bootlegging that allegedly operates with political protection in this tribal-dominated region of Khargone district. Police have identified the accused as Amit Bhati, who runs an eatery by the riverbank in Khalwa.

His accomplice, identified as Phoolsingh from Kotha village, managed to flee the spot on seeing the police vehicle. A search is currently on to locate him.

 How the Liquor Was Meant to Flow

According to initial investigation reports, the consignment of 29 cartons – totalling 290 litres – was being brought in from Chhanera. The plan was to discreetly supply this stock to several small dhabas and kirana shops in the interior parts of the Khalwa region.

Officials said that these establishments often use their storefronts as a cover to serve or sell liquor to customers illegally, particularly during late evening hours. Bhati’s own dhaba was also under scrutiny for similar activities in the past, according to local sources.

 Political Muscle Allegedly Shielded Operations

What makes this case different is the political background of the main accused. Amit Bhati is the nephew of Ramchandra Bhati, who is a close aide and the local representative of Union Minister and regional MP Durgadas Uike.

“Sources familiar with the matter said that due to this connection and lack of concrete evidence earlier, police had found it difficult to act against him in the past,” a senior officer said on condition of anonymity.

It was only around 4 am on Monday, during a routine night patrol, that a team managed to intercept the Swift car coming from the Chhanera side and caught him red-handed.

 The Syndicate Chain

Preliminary questioning has revealed a clearer picture of how the supply chain works. The accused allegedly purchased this stock from a licensed liquor shop in Chhanera. However, investigators suspect that shop’s operations are controlled by a larger syndicate of bootleggers.

This syndicate reportedly supplies liquor at a high commission to smaller hotel and kirana owners in the tribal belt. The public has often complained about the open sale of illicit liquor in the area, but action has remained slow until a major catch like this happens.

Khalwa police have registered a case under section 34/2 of the Excise Act. The seized Swift car has also been taken into custody.

“During night patrolling, our team carried out this action. We have recovered 29 cartons containing a total of 290 litres of liquor from inside the vehicle,” said Jagdish Sindia, Town Inspector (TI) of Khalwa police station. “One accused has been arrested, and efforts are on to nab the second one who fled.”

The FIR was registered around 5 am Monday morning, and further investigation is underway to trace the syndicate's wider network.
