A fresh spell of monsoon activity has intensified across Madhya Pradesh, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a heavy rainfall alert for six districts over the next 24 hours. Meanwhile, three people, including an 11-year-old child, lost their lives after lightning strikes in Shahdol district, while several others sustained injuries during thunderstorms on Sunday.

According to the IMD Bhopal, heavy rainfall is likely in Umaria, Shahdol, Anuppur, Dindori, Mandla and Balaghat on Monday. Weather officials have also warned that heavy to very heavy rainfall may continue across parts of the state until July 30 due to multiple active weather systems.

Three Dead in Lightning Incidents

Shahdol district witnessed multiple lightning-related incidents amid intense rainfall on Sunday.

In the first incident under the Jaitpur police station area, a woman identified as Kishan (28) was struck by lightning while transplanting paddy in a field near Jhink village. She was initially taken to the local hospital and later referred to the district hospital, where she succumbed during treatment.

Two other people were injured in the same incident and are reported to be in stable condition.

Separate lightning strikes elsewhere in the district claimed two more lives, including an 11-year-old child. Police have registered cases and initiated investigations into all the incidents.

Multiple Weather Systems Active

Meteorologist Arun Sharma said an active monsoon trough, along with a low-pressure area, a depression, and an approaching western disturbance, is influencing weather conditions across Madhya Pradesh.

The combined effect of these systems is expected to bring widespread rainfall between July 27 and July 30, with isolated areas likely to receive heavy to very heavy showers.

State Still Faces Rainfall Deficit

Despite the renewed rainfall activity, Madhya Pradesh continues to record below-normal monsoon rainfall this season.

According to IMD data, the state has received an average of 334.9 mm (13.2 inches) of rainfall so far, against the normal 395.2 mm (15.5 inches), leaving a 15 per cent seasonal deficit.

The eastern region has recorded an 18 per cent shortfall, while western Madhya Pradesh remains 13 per cent below normal.

Rainfall remains below average in 41 districts, including Shahdol, Rewa, Satna, Sidhi, Singrauli, Jabalpur, Balaghat, Dindori, Chhindwara, Sagar, Vidisha, Ujjain, Gwalior and Narmadapuram.

In contrast, 14 districts, including Bhopal, Indore, Sehore, Rajgarh, Harda, Dewas, Burhanpur and Neemuch, have recorded above-normal rainfall.

Itarsi Residents Perform Ritual for Rain

With rainfall remaining inadequate in parts of Narmadapuram district, residents of Itarsi performed a traditional religious ritual seeking timely monsoon showers.

At the ancient Tilak Sindoor Temple, devotees conducted a special Rudrabhishek and immersed the Shivling in water, believing the ritual invokes Lord Indra's blessings and brings rainfall.

Large numbers of devotees participated in the prayers, seeking good rainfall, prosperity for farmers and a successful agricultural season.

Heavy Rain Likely Over Next Four Days

The weather department has advised residents in rain-prone districts to remain alert for thunderstorms, lightning, waterlogging and possible flash flooding in low-lying areas.

Authorities have also urged people to avoid open fields during thunderstorms and follow weather advisories issued by local administrations.

 The Madhya Pradesh government has carried out a late-night reshuffle of nine Indian Police Service (IPS) officers, introducing new leadership across several important police units and districts. The administrative exercise is aimed at strengthening policing, improving operational efficiency, and ensuring smoother law enforcement across the state.

According to the transfer order, senior IPS officer Ravichandra Mishra has been appointed as the Inspector General (IG) of Bhopal Rural, replacing his previous assignment at the Police Headquarters. The posting is considered significant as the Bhopal Rural range covers several rapidly developing districts that require close monitoring of law and order.

The state government has also appointed Chandrashekhar Solanki as the new Inspector General of Narmadapuram Range, while Mithilesh Shukla has been posted as the Inspector General of Sagar Range. Both officers are expected to take charge shortly.

In another important change, Simmala Prasad has been appointed as the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Khargone Range, reinforcing the police leadership in the western region of the state.

At the district level, Sanjay Kumar Agrawal has been appointed as the new Superintendent of Police (SP) of Shajapur, while Priyanka Shukla will take over as the Superintendent of Police of Shahdol. The appointments are expected to strengthen policing and administrative coordination in both districts.

The transfer order also includes the reassignment of Yashpal Singh Rajput, who has been shifted as the Railway Superintendent of Police (Rail SP), Indore. Meanwhile, Ramji Shrivastava, who was serving as the SP of Shahdol, has been posted as the Assistant Inspector General (AIG) at the Madhya Pradesh Police Academy in Bhopal.

Besides field-level postings, the government has assigned additional responsibilities to senior officers. Special Director General (Administration) Adarsh Katiyar has been given additional charge of the Telecommunications Department, while Anurag has been entrusted with the additional responsibility of Inspector General, SAF Indore Range.

Police officials said such administrative reshuffles are a routine exercise intended to optimise leadership deployment, improve policing standards, and enhance public service delivery across different regions of the state.

The latest transfer list comes as the state continues to focus on strengthening law enforcement, modernising police administration, and ensuring better coordination among field units ahead of several major administrative and public events scheduled in the coming months.

The newly appointed officers are expected to assume charge of their respective positions following the completion of departmental formalities.

Heavy pre-monsoon rain in Shahdol brought respite from soaring temperatures, but widespread waterlogging highlighted shortcomings in the city's drainage system.

Shahdol witnessed a significant weather change on Tuesday afternoon as heavy rain accompanied by strong winds brought much-needed relief from intense heat and humidity across the district. The downpour, which lasted for nearly half an hour in several areas, led to a noticeable drop in temperature and improved weather conditions after days of uncomfortable summer heat.

Residents across the district welcomed the rainfall, which arrived amid rising temperatures and persistent humidity. The showers cooled the atmosphere and offered temporary respite to people who had been struggling with oppressive weather conditions over the past few weeks.

Relief From Summer Heat

The sudden spell of rain transformed weather conditions across Shahdol and surrounding areas. Streets that had been baking under high temperatures earlier in the day experienced cooler conditions by late afternoon as clouds and rain dominated the skyline.

Local residents reported a sharp improvement in comfort levels after the rainfall. Strong winds preceding the showers further helped bring down temperatures, making outdoor conditions significantly more pleasant.

Farmers Receive Timely Support

Beyond urban areas, the rainfall proved beneficial for farmers preparing their fields for the upcoming kharif season. Several villages across the district received adequate rainfall, providing essential soil moisture ahead of sowing activities.

Farmers said the rain could help reduce dependence on early irrigation and create favourable conditions for crops such as paddy and other kharif varieties. Agricultural activities in many parts of the district are expected to gain momentum if similar weather conditions continue over the coming weeks.

The rainfall is being viewed as an encouraging sign ahead of the monsoon season, particularly for farming communities that rely heavily on timely precipitation for crop planning.

Waterlogging Hits City Areas

While the rain brought relief, it also exposed persistent civic infrastructure challenges within Shahdol city. Several roads, intersections and residential colonies reported waterlogging soon after the downpour.

Residents faced difficulties commuting as rainwater accumulated on major stretches. In many locations, clogged or poorly maintained drains prevented the quick discharge of water, causing temporary disruptions to traffic movement and pedestrian access.

The situation renewed concerns about urban drainage preparedness, especially with the monsoon season approaching. Local residents pointed to recurring waterlogging issues during heavy rainfall events and called for improved maintenance of drainage networks.

Pre-Monsoon Activity Underway

According to weather experts, the rainfall was part of ongoing pre-monsoon activity affecting several regions of Madhya Pradesh. Moisture-laden winds from the Bay of Bengal, combined with favourable local atmospheric conditions, have been triggering thunderstorms and rain in parts of the state.

Meteorologists expect such weather patterns to continue intermittently in the coming days as the southwest monsoon progresses towards central India.

Monsoon Arrival Expected Soon

Weather officials indicate that the southwest monsoon is likely to reach Madhya Pradesh within the next two to three weeks. Shahdol and neighbouring districts generally receive the monsoon by the third week of June.

The current spell of rain is being seen as a precursor to the larger seasonal transition. Farmers and residents alike are closely monitoring weather developments, hoping for a timely and well-distributed monsoon.

Rainfall Outlook For District

Shahdol typically records around 1,000 millimetres of annual rainfall. Last year, the district received rainfall close to normal levels, benefiting agricultural production during the kharif season.

With pre-monsoon showers already making an appearance, expectations remain high for another productive monsoon period. However, Tuesday's rainfall also served as an early reminder of the civic challenges that local authorities may need to address before the arrival of sustained seasonal rains.
