The ongoing redevelopment of the historic Puran Talab under the AMRUT 2.0 Mission came under scrutiny after Raisen Municipal Council Chief Municipal Officer (CMO) Surekha Jatav identified deficiencies in construction work during an inspection on Sunday. She directed the contractor to rectify flaws in the stone pitching work and ensure quality standards are maintained.

Inspection of ₹1.35-Crore Project

The CMO reviewed the progress of the ₹1.35-crore lake rejuvenation project, which includes the construction of stone pitching, ghats, a boundary wall, landscaped areas and other civic amenities aimed at restoring the historic waterbody and improving public infrastructure around it.

During the inspection, officials found shortcomings in the pitching work. Jatav instructed the contractor to immediately carry out corrective measures and warned that any compromise in construction quality would not be tolerated.

Plantation Drive Under AMRUT Harit Campaign

Alongside the redevelopment work, the municipality has also launched preparations for a large-scale plantation drive under the AMRUT Harit Campaign.

The CMO said a total of 500 saplings will be planted around the lake premises. The first phase will begin with the plantation of 100 saplings, while the remaining trees will be planted in subsequent phases.

Shade and Fruit-Bearing Trees Planned

According to municipal officials, the plantation will include shade-giving and fruit-bearing tree species along the pedestrian pathway surrounding the lake. The initiative aims to improve the area's green cover while creating a more pleasant environment for residents and visitors.

Officials believe the landscaping component will complement the lake redevelopment project and enhance the site's ecological as well as recreational value.

Focus on Long-Term Urban Improvement

CMO Surekha Jatav said the objective is to transform Puran Talab into a modern, attractive and environmentally sustainable public space. She reiterated that contractors must adhere to prescribed quality standards throughout the project and complete the remaining work within the stipulated timeline.

Once completed, the rejuvenated lake is expected to emerge as a prominent public and tourism destination in Raisen, offering improved civic amenities and green spaces for local residents.

The first spell of heavy monsoon rain exposed the city's drainage vulnerabilities on Saturday night as nearly an hour of intense rainfall led to widespread waterlogging across several parts of Rewa, disrupting traffic and raising fresh questions over the Municipal Corporation's monsoon preparedness.

Several low-lying localities, including Uparhati, Tarhati, Nehru Nagar and Sirmaur Chowk, witnessed severe water accumulation after the downpour. Roads resembled ponds in many areas, forcing commuters and pedestrians to wade through knee-deep water while traffic movement remained slow for several hours.

Nehru Nagar Worst Affected

Nehru Nagar emerged as one of the worst-hit localities, where clogged drains prevented rainwater from flowing out, causing it to spill onto roads.

Residents said the waterlogging became so severe that it was difficult to distinguish between the road and open drains, posing a safety risk to pedestrians.

Locals alleged that the problem recurs every monsoon despite repeated complaints to civic authorities and that no permanent drainage solution has been implemented so far.

Waterlogging Disrupts Traffic

Heavy rain also inundated roads in Uparhati, Tarhati and Sirmaur Chowk, affecting vehicular movement across several stretches of the city.

Two-wheeler riders faced particular difficulty as several vehicles stalled in waterlogged areas, while many commuters were forced to take alternate routes to avoid submerged roads.

The water remained on several roads even after the rain had stopped, leading to prolonged traffic congestion.

Questions Over Monsoon Preparedness

The latest spell of rain has once again put the Rewa Municipal Corporation's pre-monsoon preparations under scrutiny.

Before the onset of the rainy season, civic authorities had claimed that drains had been cleaned and arrangements made to ensure smooth water drainage. However, Saturday's rainfall exposed shortcomings in the city's drainage infrastructure, with multiple neighbourhoods experiencing significant flooding after just one hour of rain.

Residents argued that timely desilting of drains and strengthening of the drainage network could have prevented such extensive waterlogging.

Civic Teams Deployed

Municipal Commissioner Akshat Jain said civic teams were rushed to affected locations immediately after reports of waterlogging were received.

According to the commissioner, workers cleared blocked drains and facilitated the drainage of accumulated rainwater in several areas.

He added that the Municipal Corporation would conduct technical surveys at locations that experience recurring waterlogging to identify long-term engineering solutions.

Residents Seek Permanent Solution

Citizens have urged the Municipal Corporation to implement a lasting solution rather than temporary measures every monsoon.

Residents warned that if the city's drainage system is not upgraded before heavier rainfall in the coming weeks, waterlogging could become more severe, affecting public safety and daily life.

With the monsoon season gathering pace, civic authorities are expected to face increasing pressure to improve drainage infrastructure and prevent repeated flooding across the city.

 Dhar Collector Rajeev Ranjan Meena carried out a surprise inspection across the city on Friday to assess the progress of development projects, the condition of government land, sanitation arrangements and ongoing construction works. During the visit, he issued on-the-spot instructions to officials, stressing timely execution of projects and improved civic management.

The inspection began at a vacant government land parcel opposite Naveen Lalbagh, where the Collector directed officials to prepare a comprehensive development plan that would ensure long-term public benefit. He said government land should be utilised effectively for projects that improve urban infrastructure and public services. Officials were instructed to prepare and submit proposals at the earliest.

Focus on Public Infrastructure

During the inspection, Meena also asked officials to prepare a list of old and dilapidated government buildings that require redevelopment. He instructed the administration to plan new construction projects in place of unsafe structures to improve public infrastructure and service delivery.

The Collector later visited another vacant government land parcel near Kila Maidan, where he reviewed the possibility of developing public welfare projects, including housing under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY). Officials were directed to explore suitable development options and prepare the required proposals.

Collector Expresses Concern Over Sanitation

Sanitation emerged as a major focus during the inspection. After noticing garbage accumulation around the Kila Maidan area, the Collector expressed dissatisfaction with the cleanliness arrangements.

He instructed the municipal administration to strengthen the door-to-door waste collection system and ensure regular cleaning across all parts of the city. Stressing the importance of maintaining a hygienic urban environment, he asked officials to improve waste management without delay.

Quality and Timelines Emphasised

The inspection also included a visit to the SPDA Ground, where public toilets are currently under construction. Reviewing the progress of the work, Meena directed officials to ensure that construction quality is not compromised under any circumstances.

He also instructed the concerned departments to improve the approach roads leading to the ground and complete all ongoing works within the prescribed timeline. The Collector said delays in development projects would not be accepted and asked officials to closely monitor execution at every stage.

Priority for Cost-Effective Development

Highlighting the need for efficient use of public resources, Meena directed officials to prioritise low-cost but high-impact development projects that can quickly benefit residents. He said proposals related to development works should move forward without unnecessary procedural delays so that citizens receive improved civic facilities at the earliest.

The Collector reiterated that the administration's focus remains on transparent planning, quality construction and timely completion of public projects.

Officials Present During Inspection

The surprise inspection was attended by SDM Ankita Prajapati, Chief Municipal Officer (CMO) Kunwar Vishwanath Singh, along with officials from the municipal administration and other concerned departments, who were instructed to ensure compliance with the directions issued during the field visit.

Irony dominated proceedings at the Raipur Municipal Corporation (RMC) on Monday as rainwater seeped through the roof of the civic headquarters during a special general body meeting convened to discuss monsoon preparedness, waterlogging and sanitation.

The meeting, called amid ongoing monsoon rains, focused on urban flooding, drain cleaning, road repairs and civic services. However, water leaking inside the assembly hall became the centre of attention, prompting sharp criticism from opposition councillors over the corporation’s preparedness.

The controversy gained further significance as the corporation has earmarked nearly ₹3,000 crore in its 2026-27 budget, a substantial increase from the previous year's allocation of around ₹2,000 crore, for civic works including drain cleaning and infrastructure maintenance.

Leader of Opposition Akash Tiwari arrived at the meeting wearing a life jacket fashioned from newspaper clippings, calling it a symbolic protest against what he described as the failure of the "triple-engine government." He alleged that despite increased spending, residents continue to face severe waterlogging and poor civic infrastructure during the monsoon.

The session also witnessed heated exchanges between elected representatives and officials. BJP councillor Swapnil Mishra accused zone officials of failing to discharge their responsibilities, referring to them as "thieves." The remark drew an immediate objection from the presiding chairperson, who acknowledged the councillor's concerns but advised him to use appropriate parliamentary language.

Outside the municipal headquarters, contractors staged a protest alleging delays in payment of dues. Raising slogans against the civic administration, they demanded immediate clearance of pending bills and criticised the functioning of the municipal authorities.

During the meeting, Mayor Meenal Choubey said the special session had been convened to address public grievances rather than engage in political confrontation. She expressed dissatisfaction with officials, saying councillors were repeatedly facing complaints from residents due to delays in resolving civic issues.

The Mayor attributed many instances of urban flooding to rapid concretisation and unplanned urban development. She urged the Town and Country Planning department to strictly enforce building norms while approving layouts. She also pointed out that roads constructed by multiple government agencies have contributed to drainage bottlenecks at several locations.

Responding to criticism over the leaking roof inside the municipal headquarters, the Mayor said the problem surfaced due to sudden heavy rainfall and assured that necessary repairs would be undertaken at the earliest. During the meeting, flower pots were placed beneath leaking sections of the roof to collect dripping water.

Several councillors highlighted additional civic concerns. BJP councillor Ramesh Sapha raised the issue of garbage collection being affected due to an alleged shortage of diesel for waste collection vehicles. Councillor Bhagat Lal Dhruv claimed that despite submitting 14 applications over the past eight months, officials had failed to act against encroachments in his ward. Councillor Rajesh Devangan also raised concerns regarding encroachment management.

The opposition also questioned the necessity of convening a special general body meeting for issues such as sanitation and waterlogging, arguing that these fall within the corporation's routine responsibilities. Former Mayor and Congress leader Pramod Dubey said special meetings are generally reserved for policy decisions or emergency situations and suggested that holding one for routine civic matters reflected shortcomings in administrative planning.

The discussions come as Raipur, like several parts of Chhattisgarh, continues to witness heavy monsoon showers, with civic authorities under increasing pressure to improve drainage, sanitation and urban infrastructure ahead of the peak rainy season.

Shahdol witnessed a significant weather change on Tuesday afternoon as heavy rain accompanied by strong winds brought much-needed relief from intense heat and humidity across the district. The downpour, which lasted for nearly half an hour in several areas, led to a noticeable drop in temperature and improved weather conditions after days of uncomfortable summer heat.

Residents across the district welcomed the rainfall, which arrived amid rising temperatures and persistent humidity. The showers cooled the atmosphere and offered temporary respite to people who had been struggling with oppressive weather conditions over the past few weeks.

Relief From Summer Heat

The sudden spell of rain transformed weather conditions across Shahdol and surrounding areas. Streets that had been baking under high temperatures earlier in the day experienced cooler conditions by late afternoon as clouds and rain dominated the skyline.

Local residents reported a sharp improvement in comfort levels after the rainfall. Strong winds preceding the showers further helped bring down temperatures, making outdoor conditions significantly more pleasant.

Farmers Receive Timely Support

Beyond urban areas, the rainfall proved beneficial for farmers preparing their fields for the upcoming kharif season. Several villages across the district received adequate rainfall, providing essential soil moisture ahead of sowing activities.

Farmers said the rain could help reduce dependence on early irrigation and create favourable conditions for crops such as paddy and other kharif varieties. Agricultural activities in many parts of the district are expected to gain momentum if similar weather conditions continue over the coming weeks.

The rainfall is being viewed as an encouraging sign ahead of the monsoon season, particularly for farming communities that rely heavily on timely precipitation for crop planning.

Waterlogging Hits City Areas

While the rain brought relief, it also exposed persistent civic infrastructure challenges within Shahdol city. Several roads, intersections and residential colonies reported waterlogging soon after the downpour.

Residents faced difficulties commuting as rainwater accumulated on major stretches. In many locations, clogged or poorly maintained drains prevented the quick discharge of water, causing temporary disruptions to traffic movement and pedestrian access.

The situation renewed concerns about urban drainage preparedness, especially with the monsoon season approaching. Local residents pointed to recurring waterlogging issues during heavy rainfall events and called for improved maintenance of drainage networks.

Pre-Monsoon Activity Underway

According to weather experts, the rainfall was part of ongoing pre-monsoon activity affecting several regions of Madhya Pradesh. Moisture-laden winds from the Bay of Bengal, combined with favourable local atmospheric conditions, have been triggering thunderstorms and rain in parts of the state.

Meteorologists expect such weather patterns to continue intermittently in the coming days as the southwest monsoon progresses towards central India.

Monsoon Arrival Expected Soon

Weather officials indicate that the southwest monsoon is likely to reach Madhya Pradesh within the next two to three weeks. Shahdol and neighbouring districts generally receive the monsoon by the third week of June.

The current spell of rain is being seen as a precursor to the larger seasonal transition. Farmers and residents alike are closely monitoring weather developments, hoping for a timely and well-distributed monsoon.

Rainfall Outlook For District

Shahdol typically records around 1,000 millimetres of annual rainfall. Last year, the district received rainfall close to normal levels, benefiting agricultural production during the kharif season.

With pre-monsoon showers already making an appearance, expectations remain high for another productive monsoon period. However, Tuesday's rainfall also served as an early reminder of the civic challenges that local authorities may need to address before the arrival of sustained seasonal rains.
