Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar used Teachers’ Day to recall a lasting lesson from his late father, professor Ramesh Tendulkar, stressing the importance of integrity and hard work over shortcuts.

Tendulkar said his father, who was a professor and mentor to many students, taught him early in life that failure was acceptable but cheating was not.

The former India captain shared the message while discussing the disappointment of students amid the controversy surrounding alleged irregularities in the NEET-UG 2026 examination. He said young people should not lose faith in hard work and merit because of failures or an unfair system. 

Tendulkar argued that society has a collective responsibility to create an environment where effort is rewarded, honesty is encouraged and merit is respected.

He said parents, teachers, schools, administrators and society at large all have a role in ensuring that young people remain motivated and confident about their future. 

The cricketer's remarks came against the backdrop of student protests over alleged irregularities in NEET-UG 2026. While Tendulkar did not directly discuss every aspect of the controversy, his message focused on the broader principle that success should not come at the cost of integrity. 

He also stressed the danger of a culture that prioritises outcomes above effort. According to Tendulkar, when society places excessive emphasis on results, it can encourage people to seek shortcuts rather than pursue genuine achievement. 

The message carried particular resonance on Teachers’ Day, when India remembers Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan and recognises the contribution of educators. For Tendulkar, however, the occasion also became an opportunity to acknowledge a teacher and mentor from his own family whose lessons extended beyond academics and into questions of character.

England captain Joe Root has equalled Sachin Tendulkar’s record for the most half-centuries in Test cricket, reaching his 68th fifty during the first Test against Pakistan at Headingley.

With his latest fifty-plus score, Root moved level with Tendulkar, who also recorded 68 Test half-centuries during his international career.

The England batter now sits at the top of the list alongside the Indian great, while West Indies legend Shivnarine Chanderpaul is third with 66 fifties.

Root moves past two legends

Root’s latest milestone also saw him move clear of former Australia captain Allan Border and India great Rahul Dravid.

Border and Dravid finished their Test careers with 63 half-centuries each, three fewer than Root and five behind Tendulkar's tally.

The achievement further underlines Root's consistency in the longest format. Unlike a record based solely on centuries, the fifty-plus tally reflects how regularly a batter has contributed substantial scores without necessarily converting every start into three figures.

Root's 66 against Pakistan therefore adds to a statistical record built over years of sustained Test cricket.

Fifth among Test captains

Root has also entered the top five among captains for the most 50-plus scores in Test cricket.

Former South Africa captain Graeme Smith leads that list with 61 such scores. Australia's Ricky Ponting is second with 54, followed by Allan Border with 51.

Pakistan's Misbah-ul-Haq occupies fourth position with 43, while Root has now moved into fifth place.

The latest achievement comes soon after Root returned to the England captaincy following Ben Stokes' retirement.

Root returns as England captain

Root originally became England's Test captain in February 2017 after Alastair Cook stepped down.

He was England's 80th Test captain and remained in the position until April 2022, when he resigned and Stokes took over.

Stokes retired from international cricket in July 2026, paving the way for Root to return to the leadership role.

At 35, Root now has another statistical milestone within reach: moving outright ahead of Tendulkar for the most Test half-centuries.

India defeated Zimbabwe by 35 runs in the final match to complete a comprehensive clean sweep, with Suryavanshi once again emerging as the standout performer. The youngster also etched his name into Indian cricket history by becoming the youngest Indian cricketer to receive the Player of the Match award in an international fixture. He broke the long-standing record held by batting legend Sachin Tendulkar, who had achieved the milestone at 17 years and 112 days.

Globally, Suryavanshi now ranks second on the list of youngest Player of the Match winners in international cricket. Sierra Leone cricketer Elusin Ture remains the youngest, having achieved the feat at 15 years and 74 days.

The innings against Zimbabwe also marked Suryavanshi's second international half-century before turning 16. No other player has recorded more than one fifty-plus score in international cricket before reaching the age of 16. Nepal's Kushal Malla had previously managed one such innings, making Suryavanshi's achievement another unique milestone.

Apart from his record-breaking performances, the young batter has established himself as one of the most destructive T20 hitters in world cricket this year. Across all T20 competitions in 2026, Suryavanshi has struck 86 sixes, making him India's second-highest six-hitter this season. Only Abhishek Sharma, who smashed 108 sixes during the 2025 season, has recorded more in recent years.
