Indian cricket may be on the verge of a major leadership shift in the T20I format, with reports suggesting that Shreyas Iyer is set to take over as captain ahead of the upcoming tours of Ireland and England. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is expected to announce the squads on June 6 following a meeting of the senior selection committee headed by Ajit Agarkar in Mumbai.

The development marks a significant moment for Indian cricket, particularly because it comes just months after India successfully defended its T20 World Cup title under the leadership of Suryakumar Yadav. However, selectors appear keen to build a long-term leadership structure as preparations begin for future global tournaments and multi-sport events.

According to reports, Tilak Varma is also being considered for the vice-captaincy role. The young left-hander has emerged as one of India's most consistent performers in the shortest format and is viewed as a potential future leader within the national setup.

Iyer's Return Gains Momentum

Shreyas Iyer's anticipated appointment follows an impressive run in franchise and domestic cricket. The right-handed batter scored 498 runs during IPL 2026 at a strike rate of 168.81 and continued to enhance his reputation as a captain.

Over the past few years, Iyer has led multiple teams to notable success. He guided Delhi Capitals to the IPL final in 2020, helped Kolkata Knight Riders win the IPL title in 2024, and took Punjab Kings to the final in 2025. His leadership record has strengthened his case for a national leadership role.

Another major talking point is the expected inclusion of 15-year-old batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. The Bihar youngster enjoyed a breakthrough IPL 2026 season, scoring 776 runs at an extraordinary strike rate of 237.30.

If selected, Sooryavanshi would become one of the youngest players ever to represent India's senior men's team. His rapid rise has drawn comparisons with some of Indian cricket's most celebrated prodigies and reflects the growing influence of IPL performances on national selection.

Before joining the senior side, Sooryavanshi is scheduled to represent India A in a tri-series in Sri Lanka, providing selectors with another opportunity to assess his readiness for international cricket.

The reported change has generated discussion because of Suryakumar Yadav's impressive record as captain. Under his leadership, India won the 2025 Asia Cup and successfully defended the T20 World Cup in 2026.

India played 52 T20 internationals under Suryakumar's captaincy, winning 42 of them and achieving a remarkable win percentage of more than 80 percent. Despite those achievements, reports suggest selectors are considering a broader restructuring plan focused on the next Olympic cycle and future ICC events.
