Janshakti Janata Dal national president Tej Pratap Yadav was detained by Patna Police from a shopping mall near Dak Bungalow Chauraha on Saturday evening and taken to Digha Police Station, hours after he had joined demonstrators at Ram Gulam Chowk earlier in the day to express solidarity with protesting students. He was produced before a judicial magistrate late that night, who remanded him to 14 days of judicial custody. He has since been shifted to Beur Central Jail, formally known as Adarsh Central Jail.

Police said the arrest was connected to cases registered over vandalism, arson and damage to public property reported during the bandh, which was called by Left-wing student organisations protesting the alleged NEET-UG paper leak and police action against students. According to police, they reviewed CCTV footage from the protests and found evidence suggesting Tej Pratap had incited protesters, though the specific charges against him haven't been publicly detailed. An FIR was registered against him at Gandhi Maidan police station.

Tej Pratap's legal team has pushed back on how the arrest was handled. His lawyer, Jagannath Singh, said the FIR was filed only on the 26th, after the arrest, and disputed the manner in which police carried out the detention. Singh said a bail petition would be filed on Monday seeking his release.

The bandh itself saw disruption across several districts, including Patna, Saran, Siwan, Aurangabad and Bhagalpur, with protesters blocking roads and railway tracks at multiple points. Patna's Senior Superintendent of Police, Kartikeya K. Sharma, said demonstrators pelted police with stones and attempted to break barricades, and that several students had been detained as police worked to identify those responsible for the violence. Leader of the Opposition Tejashwi Yadav alleged separately that police opened fire on protesters in Siwan district, and criticised Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary over the incident.

Speaking to reporters during his detention, Tej Pratap said the students' demands were justified and called on the government to address them. The protests come against a backdrop of broader turmoil over the NEET paper leak controversy, which has already led to Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan's resignation from his post.

With Tej Pratap now in judicial custody and a bail plea expected Monday, the case is likely to keep Bihar's already charged pre-election political atmosphere in the spotlight in the days ahead.

A first information report has been registered against Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Tej Pratap Yadav in Patna following a complaint by Akash Yadav, brother of Anushka Yadav, who has been at the centre of a months-long controversy involving the former Bihar minister. The case alleges forced entry into the family's residence, criminal intimidation, and phone threats — including one in which the caller claimed to represent jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi.

According to the complaint, the incident at the family's home in Patliputra colony took place on 6 June. Akash alleged that Tej Pratap and his associate Motilal Yadav arrived at the property and attempted to force their way in, threatening family members present at the time. Akash himself was away visiting Khatushyam when the alleged intrusion occurred.

What followed, according to Akash, was a series of threatening phone calls. One caller, who identified himself as Mohit, allegedly told him: "I am Lawrence Bishnoi's man. Think carefully before speaking against Tej Pratap." Akash has claimed that recordings of these calls have been submitted to police as evidence, and that Tej Pratap himself allegedly spoke during one call, suggesting no FIR could be filed against him given his political standing. Motilal Yadav, he claimed, separately warned him to keep the events of 6 June secret.

The path to the FIR was not straightforward. Akash alleged he submitted a written complaint at Patliputra police station as early as 10 June but that no case was registered at the time. He subsequently moved Patna Civil Court on 17 June, after which proceedings began and police registered the FIR. Patna ASP Divyanjali Jaiswal confirmed the complaint had been received and said investigators are now examining voice notes, call records and other material placed on record — including calls allegedly traced to a US-based number.

The controversy involving Tej Pratap and Anushka Yadav stretches back to May 2025, when a post appeared on Tej Pratap's Facebook account claiming the two had been in a relationship for twelve years. The post was deleted soon after, and Tej Pratap maintained his account had been hacked and the photographs doctored. The issue resurfaced sharply in February when Union Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi posted a congratulatory message on X following the reported birth of Anushka's daughter. Tej Pratap denied paternity at a press conference the same evening.

Since then, the RJD leader has alleged that a group of five individuals — naming Mukesh Roshan, Sanjay Yadav, Rameez, Shakti Singh and Sunil Singh — orchestrated a campaign to defame him by hacking his accounts and circulating manipulated content. He has described the entire episode as a bid to damage his reputation as he works toward establishing his own political platform. In a post on X, Tej Pratap called the FIR a political conspiracy.

He has also announced plans to pursue legal action against those he believes are behind the allegations, drawing a parallel with his father Lalu Prasad Yadav's legal battles. The investigation is ongoing.

Tej Pratap Yadav’s Y-category security has also been withdrawn, and he will now be provided with a single bodyguard. However, Tejashwi Yadav’s security cover remains unchanged, and he continues to receive Y-plus protection along with escort arrangements.

Officials clarified that while the level of security has been adjusted, protection for all members will continue based on threat assessment and standard protocol.

Eviction notice over bungalow

The dispute centers around the government bungalow at 10 Circular Road in Patna, where the Lalu family has been residing since 2005. The Bihar government has issued a 15-day deadline for vacating the premises, stating that the residence has been officially allotted to a state minister.

The Building Construction Department had earlier served notices in May and again reiterated the directive after the family did not vacate the property. Officials also confirmed that alternative government accommodation has already been allotted to Rabri Devi at 39 Harding Road.

Political reactions intensify

The decision has triggered sharp political reactions from both sides. Rabri Devi has publicly challenged the government’s eviction order, stating that the family will not vacate the bungalow voluntarily. She questioned the timing and intent of the decision, alleging political pressure behind the move.

Responding to the controversy, Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary defended the government’s action, stating that no individual has a hereditary claim over official residences. He emphasized that government accommodation is meant for public service and must be vacated once reassigned.

Security arrangements explained

As per revised guidelines, Lalu Prasad Yadav will now receive a combination of BSAP house guards, Patna Police personnel, escort vehicles, and a bulletproof car. Rabri Devi will continue to receive a larger security detail, including female bodyguards and escort support.

Officials said the changes are part of routine security reassessment procedures and are not linked to any political considerations. However, the timing of the decision has added to the ongoing political debate in the state.

The issue has been ongoing for several months, with repeated notices issued by the state government asking the family to vacate the bungalow. The residence, commonly referred to as Rabri Residence, has been a political symbol for the family since Rabri Devi’s tenure as Chief Minister.
