A case has been registered in Gwalior after a 12-year-old girl allegedly disclosed months of sexual abuse by her grandfather to her mother during a visit to Surat.

A 60-year-old businessman from Gwalior has been booked on charges of sexually abusing his 12-year-old granddaughter over several months, police said. The case came to light after the girl reportedly confided in her mother while staying with her in Surat during school vacations.

According to police, the child’s parents divorced in October 2023, and custody was granted to her father. The girl had been living with her father and paternal grandparents in Gwalior.

When the girl visited her mother in Gujarat in March 2026, the mother noticed that she appeared withdrawn and distressed. After repeated attempts to speak with her, the child allegedly revealed details of inappropriate behaviour by her grandfather.

FIR Registered in Gwalior

Officials at Janakganj police station said the complaint was initially registered in Surat and later transferred to Gwalior as a zero FIR for further investigation.

Based on the complaint, an FIR has been lodged and a probe has been initiated. Police said the accused is currently absconding and efforts are underway to trace him.

Authorities have not disclosed specific sections invoked in the case but said the matter is being investigated under relevant provisions relating to child protection and sexual offences.

Family Background

According to investigators, the complainant, a 37-year-old woman originally from Gwalior, currently works as an astrologer in Surat. Following her divorce, the court granted custody of the child to her father while allowing the mother visitation rights.

Police said the girl had travelled to Surat with her mother during summer holidays. Concerned by changes in her behaviour, the mother spoke to her, after which the alleged abuse came to light.

Search for Accused Underway

Police officials said statements are being recorded and evidence is being collected as part of the investigation. Teams have been deployed to locate the accused, who allegedly left his residence after learning about the complaint.

Officials have urged families to remain attentive to changes in children's behaviour and to report suspected abuse immediately. Child welfare authorities are also expected to be involved in providing support to the minor.

Madhya Pradesh High Court Allows Minor Rape Survivor to Continue Pregnancy

The Madhya Pradesh High Court has permitted a 16-year-old rape survivor to carry her 24-week pregnancy to term and directed the state to take full responsibility for the child’s care.

The Madhya Pradesh High Court has allowed a 16-year-old rape survivor to proceed with her pregnancy, which has reached 24 weeks. The case originates from Khargone district, where the minor became pregnant following an alleged sexual assault.

The girl informed the court that she did not wish to undergo abortion and wanted to give birth to the child. Respecting her decision, the court permitted the continuation of the pregnancy.

The matter was heard by Justice Rajendra Kumar Vani in a vacation bench sitting in Jabalpur.

Court Proceedings and Statements

During the hearing, the survivor, her parents, and police officials from Balakwada police station were present before the court. After verifying identities, the court recorded the statement of the minor and her family.

The survivor clearly stated that she wished to continue with the pregnancy, and her parents supported her decision. The state government was represented by government counsel D.R. Vishwakarma.

The court noted that the decision was voluntary and made with family consent, which formed the basis of its ruling.

State Takes Full Responsibility

The High Court directed the state government to ensure complete medical care for both the mother and the unborn child during pregnancy and after birth.

The court ordered that:

All medical expenses related to pregnancy and delivery will be borne by the state

Proper healthcare, nutrition, and postnatal care must be provided to the mother and child

The district collector must ensure the child’s care, education, health, food, and basic needs until the age of 16

These directions aim to secure the long-term welfare of the child.

Legal and Humanitarian Considerations

The court emphasized that the decision respects the survivor’s autonomy and her expressed wish to continue the pregnancy. It also ensured that the welfare of the unborn child is protected.

The ruling highlights the legal balance between reproductive rights, medical considerations, and child protection laws in sensitive cases involving minors.

Broader Impact of the Ruling

The case has drawn attention as an important precedent in similar situations where minor survivors choose to continue pregnancies beyond the legal abortion limit.

Legal experts note that such cases place significant responsibility on the state to ensure both medical safety and long-term social support for the mother and child.
