Domestic LPG cylinders, including those issued under the Ujjwala Yojana, were found being used at several food stalls and chowpaties in Rewa, raising concerns over regulatory compliance and supply management.

Widespread Use Detected

Questions have been raised over the alleged misuse of domestic LPG cylinders at food stalls and chowpaties across Rewa after a local investigation found household gas cylinders being used for commercial activities in several parts of the city.

The issue has surfaced at a time when many consumers continue to report difficulties in obtaining timely LPG refills. According to findings from the ground, a significant number of food vendors operating in public food zones are relying on domestic cylinders instead of commercial LPG connections mandated for business use.

Ujjwala Cylinders Also Found

During the inspection, cylinders distributed under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana were also reportedly seen in use at commercial establishments. The scheme is intended to provide clean cooking fuel to economically weaker households, and its cylinders are meant strictly for domestic purposes.

The presence of such cylinders at business outlets has sparked concerns about possible diversion of subsidised resources meant for household consumption.

MP-17 Chowpaty Draws Attention

One of the most notable findings emerged from the city's prominent MP-17 chowpaty, located behind Sirmaur Square. Nearly all food stalls operating at the location were found using domestic LPG cylinders.

Observers reported that commercial LPG cylinders were largely absent from the site, despite regulations requiring restaurants, eateries, tea stalls, fast-food centres and similar establishments to use commercial gas connections.

Violation of LPG Rules

Industry experts note that domestic LPG cylinders are supplied under a separate pricing and distribution framework designed for residential consumers. Commercial establishments are required to use designated commercial cylinders, which are priced differently and monitored under separate regulations.

The commercial use of domestic LPG is considered a violation of established norms and can attract action from authorities. Such practices may also affect supply chains and create additional pressure on distribution systems intended for household consumers.

Consumer Concerns Grow

The issue has added to concerns among residents who frequently complain about delays in receiving LPG refills after booking. Many consumers argue that if domestic cylinders are being diverted for business purposes on a large scale, it could impact the availability of cylinders for genuine household users.

Local residents have also questioned the effectiveness of monitoring mechanisms and enforcement efforts. They contend that periodic inspections and stricter checks could help identify and curb such violations.

Questions Over Enforcement

The reported scale of domestic LPG use at commercial establishments has brought scrutiny on the role of gas agencies, enforcement authorities and the food and civil supplies administration.

Residents say discussions around action against illegal LPG usage have surfaced from time to time, but visible changes on the ground remain limited. They believe a detailed investigation could reveal a broader pattern of misuse across commercial food outlets in the city.

Administration Signals Action

Responding to the matter, Rewa SDM Anurag Tiwari said that the commercial use of domestic LPG cylinders is against the rules. He stated that if complaints have been received, the matter will be examined through the concerned departments.

According to the official, action will be taken in accordance with regulations wherever illegal commercial use of domestic LPG cylinders is found during verification.

The developments have put the spotlight on LPG regulation and enforcement in Rewa. Attention will now be on whether inspections are intensified and whether authorities act against establishments found violating LPG usage norms, particularly amid concerns over domestic cylinder availability.
