Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan highlights focus on smallholders, food security, and climate adaptation ahead of the high-profile summit.

The commercial hub of Madhya Pradesh is entirely geared up to host the high-profile BRICS Agriculture Ministers meeting starting Tuesday. Addressing a press conference in Bhopal on Monday, Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan detailed the extensive roadmap for the summit, which will see representation from nearly 20 nations, including member states and dialogue partners.

The summit arrives at a crucial juncture as India steers the BRICS presidency this year. Originally formed in 2006, the bloc has expanded significantly to encompass 11 member states and 10 partner nations, consolidating its position as a formidable global force. The sheer scale of the alliance is reflected in its numbers—the BRICS bloc currently commands roughly 42% of the world’s agricultural land, 68% of agrarian holdings, and close to 42% of global food production.

Shift to Ministerial Level

Signifying the growing relevance of agrarian diplomacy, this iteration of the event marks a notable transition. "This is the first time the BRICS agriculture deliberations are being elevated directly to the ministerial level," Minister Chouhan stated during the briefing.

Prior to the main event, the agricultural working group completed an exhaustive preparatory phase, conducting eight distinct sessions over four separate rounds. India has previously held the BRICS chair in 2012, 2016, and 2021, notably pioneering the 'BRICS Agricultural Research Platform' during the 2016 tenure to foster institutional tech-sharing.

Focus on Smallholder Farmers

The upcoming Indore deliberations are slated to place vulnerable, small-scale farmers at the core of policy formulation. Officials familiar with the agenda indicated that bridging the gap between state-backed laboratory research and field execution remains a top priority.

"Every policy and collaborative framework design this year revolves around small and marginal farmers," Chouhan added, emphasizing that real agricultural progress hinges entirely on elevating rural incomes and safeguarding livelihoods. The core discussions will explicitly target smooth credit flow, market accessibility, and employment generation for smallholders.

Four Core Themes Identified

The five-day schedule has been structured to address pressing structural challenges across four distinct pillars:

Food security, nutrition, and sustainable livelihoods

Agricultural trade and cross-border cooperation

Climate adaptation strategies and sustainable farming practices

Fostering innovation and tech-driven public infrastructure

Amid mounting global climate anxieties, the Indian presidency intends to push hard for regenerative agriculture and the democratisation of digital public infrastructure. A dedicated ministerial dialogue titled "Future Food Security through Small Farmers, Women, and Youth" is scheduled for June 12 to institutionalize gender-inclusive agrarian policies.

Five-Day Schedule Detailed

According to the official itinerary, the initial leg from June 9 to June 11 will be dominated by the senior officials' agricultural working group meetings. This will be followed immediately by the main political consensus-building sessions, where the Agriculture Ministers will take charge between June 12 and June 13. Side deliberations will actively touch upon minimizing post-harvest food losses, managing fisheries, tracking animal husbandry challenges, and protecting native farmers' intellectual property rights.

Showcasing Central India’s Heritage

To anchor the diplomatic event with a green footprint, the administration is planning the creation of a 'BRICS Vatika' (BRICS Orchard) within Indore. Visiting delegates and ministers will participate in a collective tree-planting drive to symbolize joint ecological responsibility.

Local authorities have also curated a cultural itinerary for the foreign dignitaries. Delegates are expected to visit Indore’s iconic historical landmarks, including the Holkar-era Rajwada palace, the culinary hub Chhappan Dukaan, and the historic fortress town of Mandu, showcasing Central India's heritage alongside core diplomatic negotiations.
