A surprise inspection of two spa centres in Gwalior led to questioning of staff and scrutiny of records as police intensified checks against suspected illegal activities.

A late-evening police operation at two spa centres in Gwalior triggered panic among staff after teams from the city’s Women Safety Wing carried out a surprise inspection on Sunday. The action was part of an ongoing drive to verify compliance and investigate inputs regarding suspected unlawful activities allegedly being conducted under the guise of spa and wellness services.

Officials said the inspections were conducted at two prominent establishments in the city following intelligence inputs received over recent weeks.

Staff Found Hiding

During the inspection, police personnel found several women staff members hiding inside a kitchen area and other corners of the premises. According to officials, the women appeared nervous when the teams entered the centres.

Female police personnel brought them out and conducted preliminary verification. As part of the inquiry, some of the women were taken to the police station for further questioning and identity verification. Authorities said the process was aimed at establishing their employment status and confirming documentation.

Multiple Teams Deployed

The operation was carried out under the supervision of Additional Superintendent of Police Anu Beniwal. Teams led by DSP Shikha Soni, DSP Annapurna Sirsam and Woman Inspector Deepti Tomar participated in the coordinated inspection.

Police officials said the checks were designed to assess whether the centres were operating strictly within the scope of their licensed business activities.

The raids come days after enforcement agencies increased monitoring of several commercial establishments across the city as part of a broader compliance drive.

Records Under Scanner

During the inspection, police examined customer registers, licences and other operational documents maintained by the spa centres. Authorities found that visitor records were incomplete and, in some instances, lacked proper identification details.

Officials noted that details such as customer names, contact information and identity records were not being maintained in accordance with expected norms. The documentation gaps immediately drew the attention of the inspection teams.

Police also reviewed CCTV camera placement and footage storage arrangements to determine whether surveillance systems were functioning properly and covering all required areas.

Warning to Operators

Following the inspection, police issued a stern warning to the owners and managers of the establishments. Authorities directed them to ensure strict compliance with operational guidelines and maintain complete records of visitors and staff.

Officials indicated that any future violations could invite legal action, including registration of criminal cases and sealing of premises if unlawful activities are detected.

The warning forms part of a broader effort by law enforcement agencies to tighten oversight of businesses that have previously attracted complaints or intelligence inputs.

Focus on Illegal Activities

According to police sources, the inspections were prompted by recurring information suggesting that some establishments may be misusing spa services as a cover for activities not permitted under law. Sunday's operation was intended to verify those inputs and assess ground realities.

At present, officials have not announced the detection of any confirmed illegal activity during the raids. However, inquiries are continuing and records seized during the inspection are being examined.

Speaking on the action, ASP Anu Beniwal said the Women Safety Wing's primary objective was to ensure that no illegal or unethical activities were being carried out under the cover of spa operations in the city. She confirmed that some staff members had been brought in for questioning and that customer registers were found to be incomplete.
