Fraud Allegation Surfaces

A startling case of alleged land fraud has come to light in Madhya Pradesh’s Satna, where an 85-year-old retired railway employee was reportedly declared dead in official records despite being alive. The alleged manipulation was carried out to facilitate the transfer of a valuable ancestral property, prompting district authorities to order a detailed investigation.

The case revolves around Ishwardeen Soni, a resident of Kamta Tola in Satna, who owns around 0.1680 hectares of ancestral land in the Kothi area. According to the complaint submitted to authorities, government records were altered to show that he had died more than a decade ago, paving the way for changes in land ownership.

Death Certificate Under Scrutiny

The controversy began after a death certificate was allegedly obtained in June 2024 through questionable means. Documents submitted before the municipal authorities reportedly stated that Ishwardeen Soni had died following a prolonged illness.

Investigators are examining how the application was processed and approved despite the individual being alive. Officials are also reviewing the verification process that led to the issuance of the certificate and subsequent revenue record changes.

Role of Local Officials

According to the complaint, several local functionaries allegedly played a role in validating the claim of death. A ward councillor reportedly issued a panchanama stating that the elderly man had died on July 18, 2015. The document was allegedly supported by signatures from witnesses.

Based on the submitted records, municipal officials initiated verification procedures. The matter was subsequently processed through the local administrative system, eventually resulting in official registration of the reported death.

Authorities are now examining whether due procedures were followed and whether there was any deliberate suppression of facts during verification.

Land Ownership Changed

The alleged fraud did not end with the issuance of the death certificate. Revenue records were reportedly altered to show that the elderly man was deceased and had no legal heirs.

Officials said the ancestral land was subsequently transferred in the names of relatives. The complaint further alleges that a local revenue official played a significant role in facilitating the mutation process. The land was later reportedly sold to the official’s spouse for around Rs 9 lakh.

Family members maintain that the claims in the records are entirely false. Ishwardeen Soni is alive and has three sons, making the declaration of him as childless and deceased highly contentious.

Son Approaches Authorities

The alleged irregularities came to light after Rajesh Soni, one of Ishwardeen’s sons, discovered discrepancies in official records. He filed written complaints with the district administration and local police authorities, seeking action against those involved.

The complaint triggered immediate attention from officials, leading to scrutiny of municipal and revenue department records linked to the case.

Collector Orders Probe

Satna Collector Dr. Satish Kumar S has ordered a detailed inquiry into the matter. Officials said all relevant documents, including the death certificate, verification reports and land mutation records, will be examined as part of the investigation.

The inquiry is expected to determine whether procedural lapses occurred or whether there was deliberate collusion among individuals involved in processing the documents.

Wider Concerns Raised

The Satna land grab case has once again highlighted concerns over document fraud and manipulation of land records. Legal experts note that fraudulent mutations and forged certificates can lead to prolonged property disputes, particularly in cases involving ancestral assets.

For now, the administration’s focus remains on verifying the authenticity of the records and fixing accountability. Further action is likely once the inquiry report is submitted and examined by district authorities.
