India's military leadership is set for a major transition with the appointment of Lt Gen Dhiraj Seth as the next Chief of the Army Staff (COAS). The Centre announced the appointment on Saturday, confirming that he will assume charge on June 30 following the retirement of General Upendra Dwivedi. With nearly four decades of military experience and a distinguished operational record, Lt Gen Seth will take command of the world's second-largest standing army at a time when India's security environment continues to evolve rapidly. His appointment is being viewed as a significant step in ensuring continuity in military modernization, strategic preparedness, and operational effectiveness across multiple theatres.

The Ministry of Defence said that the President has approved the appointment of Lt Gen Dhiraj Seth in the substantive rank of General with effect from June 30, 2026. He will succeed General Upendra Dwivedi, who retires at the end of the month after completing his tenure as Army Chief.

According to the official notification, General Seth will remain in office until August 31, 2028. His elevation comes just two months after he assumed the position of Vice Chief of Army Staff, one of the most senior appointments within the Indian Army hierarchy.

Extensive Leadership Experience

Lt Gen Seth currently serves as the Vice Chief of Army Staff and is regarded as one of the Army's most experienced officers. Over the course of his nearly 40-year military career, he has held several operational, strategic, and administrative assignments across different regions of the country.

A graduate of the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla, he was commissioned into the Armoured Corps in December 1986. Since then, he has served in a variety of command and staff roles that have shaped India's military preparedness and operational capabilities.

His command experience spans multiple levels, including leading an Armoured Regiment in the desert sector, commanding an Armoured Brigade in the western theatre, and heading a Counter-Insurgency Force in Jammu and Kashmir. These assignments provided him with experience in both conventional and unconventional military operations.

Key Role in Modernisation

One of the defining aspects of Lt Gen Seth's career has been his contribution to force modernization and capability development. At Army Headquarters, he worked in key planning and development branches responsible for long-term military transformation.

Officials credit him with contributing to strategic planning initiatives, force restructuring programs, and efforts aimed at enhancing future combat readiness. His experience in modernization is expected to play an important role as the Indian Army continues to focus on technological upgrades, indigenous defence production, and integrated theatre commands.

As a Lieutenant General, he commanded the prestigious Sudarshan Chakra Corps and later served as General Officer Commanding, Delhi Area. He subsequently led both the South Western Command and Southern Command, becoming one of the few senior officers to command two operational Army Commands during his career.

His leadership across these commands involved oversight of critical operational sectors and strategic military responsibilities. Defence experts believe this broad exposure across different theatres has prepared him well for the country's highest military position.

Lt Gen Seth has also undergone training at several premier military institutions. He is an alumnus of the Higher Command Course and the National Defence College and attended the renowned Command and Staff Course in Paris. These academic and professional achievements have further strengthened his understanding of contemporary military strategy and global security challenges.

With Lt Gen Dhiraj Seth set to take over as the next Army Chief on June 30, attention will now shift to his priorities for the Indian Army. Defence observers expect continuity in modernization efforts, operational readiness, and strategic reforms aimed at strengthening India's defence capabilities in an increasingly complex security landscape.
