In a high-stakes maritime operation, the Indian Navy has successfully extracted an unexploded missile warhead lodged inside a commercial crude oil tanker off the Kerala coast. The Marshall Islands-flagged vessel, MT Olympic Life, had arrived in Indian waters after a multi-day journey from the UAE, unknowingly carrying the live weapon embedded deep within one of its primary fuel storage compartments.

Mid-Sea Attack Near Oman

The crisis began on May 26 when the vessel was transiting from Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates toward Kochi. While navigating the volatile waters off the coast of Oman, roughly 1.8 kilometres from the capital city of Muscat, a sudden explosion rocked the port side of the hull.

Initial reports from international shipping agencies indicated an explosion near the waterline, which caused a minor oil leak. The vessel’s management firm, Springfield Shipping, initially noted that an unknown object had struck the tanker. Despite the impact and subsequent fuel sheen on the water, the tanker continued its 2,000-kilometre journey across the Arabian Sea, as the structural damage was deemed non-critical.

Unexploded Missile Traversed Hull

It was only during subsequent internal inspections while en route that the crew discovered a highly dangerous reality. A military projectile had sliced through the outer hull, traversed multiple internal structural compartments, and come to a halt inside a fuel tank packed with crude oil.

Recognising the catastrophic risk of a secondary explosion, the vessel sent out an urgent alert. The distress signal was routed through the Information Fusion Centre–Indian Ocean Region (IFC-IOR) based in Gurugram, which immediately mobilised Indian maritime authorities.

Naval Commandos Launch Operation

Upon receiving the coordinates, the Southern Naval Command in Kochi assumed control of the tactical response. A specialist Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team alongside naval commandos was deployed to board the crude oil tanker as it neared the Kochi coast.

"The presence of a live, unexploded missile warhead directly inside a fuel storage compartment presented an extraordinary risk profile," a defence official said on condition of anonymity. "Any friction, spark, or static charge during the extraction process could have triggered a massive detonation, destroying the vessel and endangering regional port infrastructure."

Precision Extraction From Fuel Tank

The Navy’s elite EOD specialists adopted a highly calculated, multi-phase operational blueprint. Working under intense pressure inside the dark, fumes-heavy environment of the fuel compartment, the team utilized advanced diagnostic equipment to isolate the missile's volatile detonation mechanism.

After successfully neutralising the electronic and mechanical fuses, the team carefully extracted the heavy warhead along with associated metallic debris. The complex operation concluded without any casualties or further environmental leakage.

Security Net in Indian Ocean

According to an official statement issued by the Ministry of Defence, there were no Indian nationals among the crew onboard the MT Olympic Life. The extracted military hardware has since been moved overland to a secure naval facility in Kochi for detailed forensic analysis to identify the weapon's country of origin.

Naval analysts point out that the successful operation highlights New Delhi’s growing responsibility as a first responder and preferred security partner in the Indian Ocean Region.
