Gwalior police have launched an investigation after the superintendent of the Central Jail in Gwalior alleged that he was blackmailed using video clips purportedly showing irregularities inside a prison facility. According to officials, the matter came to light after Jail Superintendent Vidit Sarvaiya reported receiving calls and WhatsApp messages from an unknown individual who claimed to possess sensitive video footage related to jail operations. The messages allegedly sought money in exchange for not circulating the clips to senior authorities and the public.

Complaint Filed

The complaint states that the first contact was made on June 7 when an unknown person allegedly called and sent messages to the superintendent from a mobile number. The sender reportedly shared four video clips and claimed to have additional footage that could damage the reputation of the jail administration.

The messages allegedly warned that the videos would be forwarded to higher authorities if the demand was not met within a specified period.

Officials familiar with the matter said the superintendent informed senior prison authorities before approaching the police.

Demand Through Messages

According to the complaint, the sender later asked for a meeting and allegedly directed the superintendent to come to a rest house on Gandhi Road. Investigators say discussions in the WhatsApp chat indicated a demand for a substantial amount of money.

The complainant has alleged that a hand-palm emoji was used in the conversation as a symbolic indication of the amount being sought. Prison officials believe the demand was linked to an attempt to extort money in exchange for withholding the videos.

Videos Surface Online

After the alleged demand was not met, several video clips began circulating on social media platforms.

The videos purportedly show inmates and prison-related activities, including claims regarding the sale of items at inflated prices and alleged irregular practices inside a jail premises. However, authorities have cautioned that the authenticity and origin of the clips have not yet been verified.

Officials said it remains unclear whether the footage was recorded inside Gwalior Central Jail or another correctional facility.

Suspicion Over Possible Links

In his complaint, the superintendent reportedly expressed suspicion that the matter may involve individuals familiar with prison operations rather than a routine cyber fraud attempt.

Sources said the written complaint refers to the possible involvement of a suspended prison guard and a former inmate. Police have not confirmed any individual's role and have stated that all angles are being examined.

Investigators are expected to verify call records, digital evidence and the source of the videos before drawing conclusions.

The prison administration has handed over relevant material, including message records, call details and video files, to investigators. The evidence has reportedly been stored and submitted through digital media for forensic examination.
