Tension escalated in Rewa on Monday as Youth Congress workers staged a major protest against the rejection of senior party leader Meenakshi Natarajan’s nomination for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections. Demanding the immediate reinstatement of her candidature, protesters burnt an effigy of the Election Commission (EC) at the busy Sirmaur Chauraha, alleging bias and a political conspiracy.

The demonstration, led by the District Youth Congress president, saw heavy sloganeering against regulatory bodies and the ruling government. Following the protest, a formal memorandum was submitted to the local administration demanding central intervention into the scrutiny process.

Effigy burnt at Sirmaur Chauraha

The protest began in the morning hours when dozens of Youth Congress office-bearers and party workers gathered at Sirmaur Chauraha with placards and banners. Traffic was briefly disrupted as angry demonstrators raised slogans against the electoral authorities.

Addressing the gathering, youth leaders alleged that democratic institutions were being manipulated under pressure from the ruling dispensation to stifle the opposition's voice. Security personnel were deployed at the site to monitor the situation, which remained highly charged throughout the afternoon.

Omission of pending case details

The controversy stems from the scrutiny of nomination papers filed for the Rajya Sabha seats from Madhya Pradesh. According to officials, Meenakshi Natarajan had filed her papers as the authorized candidate of the Indian National Congress.

However, during the scrutiny process, an objection was raised regarding the non-disclosure of certain information related to a pending legal case in her affidavit. The Returning Officer accepted the objection and subsequently rejected the nomination forms, leaving the Congress party without its primary candidate in the fray.

Outrage over opposition suppression

The decision has triggered sharp reactions from the Congress camp, which views the development as a deliberate attempt to keep their senior leadership out of the parliamentary race. Party representatives argued that the grounds for rejection were technically weak and politically motivated.

"Meenakshi Natarajan is a senior and respected leader. Rejecting her nomination on flimsy grounds is unfair and against the spirit of free and fair elections," a senior Youth Congress worker stated during the agitation, questioning the impartiality of the poll panel.

Congress mounts legal challenge

Apart from ground-level protests, the state unit of the Congress is reportedly exploring all legal avenues to challenge the Returning Officer's directive. Legal experts associated with the party are preparing to move higher authorities to seek relief.

Local administrative officials confirmed that the memorandum submitted by the protestors has been forwarded to senior quarters. Meanwhile, internal party meetings are being held in Bhopal and regional centers to finalize the next course of action.

Threat of statewide agitation

The Youth Congress has threatened to launch an intense, state-wide agitation if the decision is not reconsidered immediately. Protesters warned that Monday's demonstration in Rewa was merely a preliminary reaction and that the stir would expand to all districts of Madhya Pradesh.

As the political climate heats up, security has been stepped up around key government offices in the region. Party leaders maintained that they would continue to hit the streets until justice is served to their candidate.
