Seven women were killed and more than a dozen injured in a crowd crush at Bihar's Ashok Dham Temple in Lakhisarai during the third Monday of Shravan.

At least seven women were killed and more than a dozen people injured after a massive crowd surge at the Indramaneshwar Shiv Temple, popularly known as Ashok Dham Temple, in Bihar's Lakhisarai district on Monday morning.

The incident occurred at around 6:40 am, when thousands of devotees had gathered at the temple on Teesri Somwari, the third Monday of the holy Shravan month. Large numbers of devotees had arrived to perform Jalabhishek and offer prayers to Lord Shiva.

Officials said the tragedy was linked to a combination of an exceptionally large crowd, damaged barricades, congestion at entry points and panic following the fall of a utility pole near one of the queues.

Massive Crowd Builds Overnight

The temple complex had begun filling up during the night, with officials estimating that around 50,000 devotees had gathered in and around the premises.

By approximately 6 am, the queue reportedly extended for more than six kilometres towards Ashok Dham Halt railway station.

Lakhisarai District Magistrate Shailendra Kumar said the situation became particularly difficult between 6:30 am and 6:45 am, when two passenger trains arrived at the nearby railway station within a short interval.

Thousands of passengers reportedly got off the trains and proceeded towards the temple, adding to the already heavy crowd waiting to enter.

Barricades Give Way

As the number of devotees increased, pressure began building at the temple's entry points.

According to the district administration, a group of young men allegedly attempted to move ahead in the queue and broke through barricades near the entrance. The movement further compressed an already congested section of the crowd.

Police personnel had reportedly been deployed at the temple from around 3 am to manage the gathering. However, officials said the scale of the crowd created significant difficulties for personnel attempting to maintain separate queues and control movement.

Fallen Pole Sparks Panic

The situation escalated after a utility pole fell near the queue for male devotees.

Officials said the pole was carrying cable wires rather than high-voltage electrical lines. However, a rumour reportedly spread among devotees that a live electric wire had fallen and people could be electrocuted.

The rumour triggered a sudden movement within the crowd.

People standing in the men's queue reportedly moved towards one side, pushing into the adjacent women's queue. The sudden pressure caused several women to fall, with others falling on top of them.

The resulting crush lasted only a few minutes but was enough to trap several people in the densely packed area.

Seven Women Die

Police personnel, volunteers and temple workers rushed to the affected area and began removing people from the crowd.

The victims were taken to Lakhisarai Sadar Hospital, where seven women were declared dead.

Officials said the victims died from traumatic asphyxiation caused by the crowd crush. More than a dozen people were injured, with some reportedly suffering from suffocation and heat exhaustion.

Authorities continued to assess the condition of those injured and coordinate medical assistance following the incident.

Investigation Into Crowd Management

Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Sinha expressed condolences to the families of those who died and said an investigation would examine the circumstances that led to the tragedy.

The inquiry is expected to examine several aspects of the incident, including crowd-management arrangements, barricading, the movement of devotees arriving from the railway station and the circumstances surrounding the fallen utility pole.

Authorities are also looking into the role of rumours about a live electrical wire in triggering the sudden movement that led to the crush.

Officials have warned that action could be taken against people found responsible for deliberately spreading false information that contributed to the panic.

Security Tightened Across Bihar

The tragedy comes during the ongoing Shravan festival, when large numbers of devotees visit Shiva temples across Bihar and other parts of the country.

Following the incident, authorities have strengthened security and crowd-control arrangements at major religious sites across Bihar.

The incident has also renewed concerns over crowd management at temples during major religious occasions, particularly when large numbers of devotees arrive simultaneously through railway stations and other transport points.

Officials are expected to review arrangements at Ashok Dham Temple and other major pilgrimage sites to prevent a repeat of the tragedy as the Shravan season continues.

The holy city of Ujjain is preparing to witness a record-breaking surge of pilgrims during the upcoming Shravan-Bhadau season, as advance railway bookings for August and September have already surpassed previous years' figures. Anticipating an average of nearly 95,000 passengers every day, the Indian Railways is introducing several crowd-management measures, including a one-way traffic system at Ujjain Railway Station, drone surveillance, additional trains, and enhanced security arrangements.

According to railway officials, the special arrangements will remain in place during the Shravan-Bhadau period, scheduled from July 30 to September 7, when lakhs of devotees are expected to visit the famous Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple for darshan.

Advance Bookings Break Previous Records

Railway data indicates that Ujjain Railway Station usually handles around 72,000 passengers daily under normal conditions. However, advance ticket reservations for the upcoming pilgrimage season have already crossed 95,000 passengers per day, reflecting a sharp rise in the number of devotees planning to visit the city.

Officials believe this year's pilgrimage could become the busiest in recent years, largely due to the growing popularity of Mahakal Lok, which has significantly increased tourist and pilgrim footfall since its inauguration.

One-Way Traffic System to Be Introduced

For the first time during the Shravan season, Ujjain Railway Station is expected to operate under a one-way passenger movement system to reduce congestion.

According to Railway Protection Force (RPF) Station In-charge Narendra Yadav, a proposal has been submitted to the railway division for approval. Under the proposed plan:

Passengers will enter the station through Platform No. 1.

Exit will be allowed through Platform No. 8.

Entry from the goods yard side will remain completely closed.

The move is aimed at ensuring smoother passenger flow and preventing overcrowding at the station premises during peak hours.

Six Additional Trains on Bhopal Route

Railway authorities have also announced plans to operate six additional trains, particularly on the Bhopal-Ujjain route, which witnesses the highest number of pilgrims during the holy month.

Officials say passenger traffic has consistently increased after the development of Mahakal Lok. While approximately 70,000 passengers visited the station daily during last year's Shravan season, the station now handles nearly the same volume even on regular days. This year's festive rush is expected to push the number beyond 95,000 daily passengers.

Waterproof Holding Area for Devotees

To improve passenger convenience and manage crowds efficiently, a waterproof holding area with a capacity of 1,200 passengers is being constructed outside the railway station.

The facility will provide basic amenities and allow authorities to regulate passenger entry into the station in a phased manner, reducing pressure on platforms and entry gates.

Officials believe the holding area will prove especially useful during heavy rainfall, which is common during the monsoon pilgrimage season.

Drone Surveillance and Enhanced Security

Security arrangements are also being strengthened to handle the anticipated crowd.

Railway authorities have requested 50 additional security personnel for deployment during the festival period. The number of CCTV cameras at the station will also be increased to improve surveillance.

For the first time, drones will monitor crowd movement around the station and adjoining areas. Officials say aerial surveillance will enable quicker response in case of emergencies, overcrowding, or any security-related incidents.

The integrated monitoring system is expected to significantly improve real-time crowd management during peak pilgrimage days.

Trial Run for Simhastha Crowd Management

Railway and district administration officials believe that the arrangements introduced this year will serve a larger purpose beyond the Shravan pilgrimage.

The one-way traffic system, drone monitoring, holding areas, and additional security deployment are expected to act as a trial run for future crowd management during the Simhastha Kumbh Mela, one of the world's largest religious gatherings hosted in Ujjain.

Authorities hope that the experience gained during this year's pilgrimage season will help formulate more efficient crowd-control strategies for future mega-events.

With record advance bookings already in place, Ujjain is preparing for one of its busiest pilgrimage seasons ever. The combination of improved infrastructure, enhanced security, additional train services, and innovative crowd-management measures is expected to ensure safer and smoother travel for thousands of devotees arriving every day to seek the blessings of Lord Mahakal.

The Odisha government has confirmed that two devotees died during the annual Shree Jagannath Rath Yatra in Puri on Thursday but clarified that the fatalities were caused by medical emergencies and not by a stampede.

Lakhs of devotees gathered on the Grand Road (Bada Danda) to witness the world-famous chariot procession of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra despite heavy rainfall.

Government Denies Stampede

Reports of a possible stampede emerged after confusion briefly broke out near Marichikote Chowk during the procession. However, the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) and the state government denied that a stampede had occurred.

Odisha Health Minister Mukesh Mahaling said the two deaths were the result of separate medical emergencies rather than crowd crushing.

According to officials, one elderly devotee died after experiencing severe breathing difficulties, while 35-year-old Anil Dash suffered a cardiac arrest despite receiving immediate medical attention.

Over 100 Devotees Receive Medical Treatment

Authorities said more than 100 devotees were treated during the festival for exhaustion, dehydration, breathing problems and minor injuries caused by prolonged exposure to the large gathering and humid weather.

Medical teams, ambulances and emergency response units remained stationed across the procession route to provide immediate assistance.

Human Chain Helped Emergency Response

To ensure quick medical evacuation, police personnel, security officials and volunteers formed human corridors whenever emergencies were reported.

The temporary passage allowed ambulances to reach affected devotees and transport them to Puri District Headquarters Hospital without significant delay. Officials said the coordinated response helped prevent further complications.

Opposition Seeks Review of Arrangements

The incident has sparked political reactions, with Leader of Opposition and former Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik expressing condolences to the families of the deceased.

He called for a comprehensive review of crowd management and safety arrangements to ensure the remaining Rath Yatra events are conducted smoothly.

The Odisha government has reiterated that the Rath Yatra continued under enhanced security and crowd management measures following the brief disruption caused by heavy rain and medical emergencies.

Bhopal Railway Division Gears Up for NEET Exam Rush, Focus on Crowd Management

Special arrangements planned at major railway stations as thousands of NEET aspirants are expected to travel across Bhopal and nearby districts on June 21.

With the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) scheduled for June 21, authorities in Madhya Pradesh have intensified preparations to ensure smooth travel and crowd management for thousands of candidates appearing for the examination. The Bhopal Division of West Central Railway has announced a series of measures aimed at facilitating the movement of students and their families across key examination centers in the region.

The examination will be conducted in Bhopal, Guna, Vidisha, Narmadapuram (Hoshangabad), and Ashoknagar. Officials expect the highest number of candidates in Bhopal, where 13,774 students are likely to appear for the test. Other districts are expected to host 1,839 candidates in Guna, 1,709 in Vidisha, 1,283 in Narmadapuram, and 865 in Ashoknagar.

Given the anticipated increase in passenger traffic, railway authorities have placed special emphasis on crowd control, passenger guidance, and train punctuality.

Special Arrangements at Railway Stations

According to Senior Divisional Commercial Manager (DCM) Saurabh Kataria, comprehensive arrangements have been made at all major stations under the Bhopal Railway Division to ensure a hassle-free experience for examinees.

Special crowd management measures will be implemented at station premises, entry and exit gates, and platforms. Additional personnel from the Commercial Department, Railway Protection Force (RPF), and Operations Department will be deployed to manage passenger movement and maintain order.

Railway officials have also activated dedicated announcement systems to provide real-time information and guidance to passengers. These announcements will help students navigate stations efficiently and reach their destinations on time.

Focus on Passenger Assistance

Authorities have planned queue management systems and barricading arrangements to regulate passenger flow at busy locations. Special assistance desks and guidance facilities will also be available to help candidates traveling to examination centers.

Officials stated that railway staff would be stationed at key points to provide directions and support to students unfamiliar with local transit arrangements.

The division has instructed all concerned departments to remain alert and prepared to respond to any unexpected surge in passenger traffic or operational challenges during the examination period.

Emphasis on Train Punctuality

Maintaining train schedules is another key priority for railway authorities. Special monitoring will be carried out at stations connected to examination centers to ensure smooth operations throughout the day.

Officials have been directed to take all necessary measures to keep train services running on time, particularly those trains that pass through or halt at stations serving major NEET examination centers.

The objective is to minimize travel disruptions and ensure that candidates reach their examination venues without delay.

Large Candidate Turnout Expected

NEET is one of India's most competitive entrance examinations, serving as the gateway for admission to undergraduate medical courses across the country. Every year, the examination witnesses large-scale movement of students and guardians, placing additional pressure on transportation infrastructure.

With more than 19,000 candidates expected across the five districts under the Bhopal Division's jurisdiction, railway authorities are treating the event as a major operational exercise requiring coordinated planning and execution.

As the examination date approaches, officials have appealed to students and their families to plan their journeys in advance, arrive at stations early, and follow railway instructions to ensure a smooth and stress-free travel experience.
