Madhya Pradesh witnessed an overwhelming display of devotion on the first Monday of the holy month of Sawan, with lakhs of devotees thronging Shiva temples across the state for Jalabhishek, Rudrabhishek and special prayers. The largest gathering was witnessed at Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain, where more than 1.10 lakh devoteeshad offered prayers by Monday afternoon. Long queues were seen throughout the day as pilgrims from across the country arrived to participate in the auspicious occasion.

Grand Bhasma Aarti at Mahakal

The day began with the traditional Bhasma Aarti, for which the temple doors were opened at 2:30 am. Following Jalabhishek, priests performed the Panchamrit Abhishek using milk, curd, ghee, honey, sugar and fruit juices.

Lord Mahakal was adorned in the majestic Rajadhiraj form with sandalwood paste, bhang, dry fruits, flowers and ornaments. Rituals also included the worship of Lord Ganesha, Goddess Parvati and Lord Kartikeya before offerings of fruits and sweets were presented to the deity. Sacred ash was offered to Lord Mahakal by the Mahanirvani Akhara, after which devotees witnessed the revered Bhasma Aarti amid chants of "Har Har Mahadev."

Devotees Gather Across Major Shiva Shrines

Apart from Ujjain, thousands of devotees visited major Shiva temples including Omkareshwar-Mamleshwar, Bhojeshwar Mahadev in Bhojpur, Matangeshwar Temple in Khajuraho, Pashupatinath Temple in Mandsaur, Kundeshwar, Bandakpur Jageshwar Dham, Achaleshwar Mahadev in Gwalior and prominent temples in Bhopal, Raisen, Harda, Umaria and other districts.

Temple doors opened at different timings, ranging from midnight to early morning, with devotees performing Jalabhishek using holy water, milk, bel leaves, flowers and other traditional offerings.

Processions Add to Festive Spirit

Religious processions also marked the celebrations in several districts.

At Omkareshwar, the traditional procession of Lord Omkareshwar-Mamleshwar is scheduled to take place later in the day.

In Itarsi, the Shiv Seva Shankar Samiti organised a grand Kanwar Yatra carrying holy water from the Narmada River in Narmadapuram to Balaji Temple. The procession featured Lord Shiva's palanquin and witnessed enthusiastic participation from devotees amid continuous chants of "Har Har Mahadev."

A similar Kanwar procession was taken out in Soikala of Sheopur district, where devotees carried sacred water to Pipleshwar Mahadev Temple following long-standing local tradition.

Heavy Rush in Other Districts

Thousands of devotees also gathered at the historic Devtalab Shiv Dham in Mauganj district. MLA Girish Gautamoffered prayers at the temple and wished for peace and prosperity. Authorities deployed additional police personnel and crowd management teams to ensure smooth darshan for devotees.

In Harda, major temples including Gupteshwar, Tilbhandeshwar and Riddhnath Mahadev witnessed heavy footfall from the early hours of the morning. Special Rudrabhishek ceremonies were performed during Brahma Muhurta before devotees continued offering prayers throughout the day.

Administration Ensures Smooth Arrangements

Given the massive turnout, district administrations and temple management committees made elaborate arrangements for crowd control, security, drinking water and medical assistance. Police personnel remained deployed at major temples to regulate queues and facilitate uninterrupted darshan.

With Sawan considered one of the most sacred months for Lord Shiva devotees, authorities expect the large influx of pilgrims to continue over the remaining Mondays of the holy month.

Preparations have been completed at the world-famous Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain as the holy month of Shravan (Sawan) begins on July 30. The temple administration expects nearly four lakh devotees to visit the shrine every day during the festive period, with elaborate arrangements made for darshan, security, healthcare and religious ceremonies.

The Shravan month will continue until August 28, while the traditional royal processions of Lord Mahakal will extend into the Bhadrapada month, concluding on September 7.

Six Royal Processions Planned

One of the biggest attractions of the Sawan season is the royal procession (Rajsi Sawari) of Lord Mahakal.

This year, six processions will be taken out—four during Shravan Mondays and two during Bhadrapada Mondays. The first procession is scheduled for August 3, while the final royal procession will be held on September 7.

The procession will begin from the Mahakaleshwar Temple premises at 4 pm, proceed through the city's traditional route, and reach Ram Ghat around 5 pm, where rituals including Shipra Jalabhishek, puja and aarti will be performed. Lord Mahakal will return to the temple by around 7 pm.

Four Lakh Devotees Expected Daily

Temple authorities estimate that nearly 400,000 devotees may visit the shrine every day during Sawan and Bhadrapada.

To manage the massive influx, the administration has strengthened crowd management, medical services and security arrangements throughout the temple complex.

Special Arrangements for Devotees

According to Mahakal Temple Administrator Pratham Kaushik, devotees attending temple aartis will once again be provided moving aarti darshan from the first three rows of the Kartik Mandap.

The temple has also planned several additional facilities, including:

• Five LED display chariots during every royal procession.

• Tribal cultural groups performing devotional presentations.

• Medical teams deployed at 15 locations.

• Round-the-clock ambulance services.

• Enhanced crowd management and security measures.

Temple Timings Revised for Sawan

To accommodate the increased number of devotees, temple timings have been revised between July 30 and September 7.

The temple will open:

• Daily: 3:00 am

• Every Monday: 2:30 am

The famous Bhasma Aarti will be conducted:

• Daily: 3:00 am to 5:00 am

• Mondays: 2:30 am to 4:30 am

Normal temple timings will resume from September 8.

Dedicated Darshan Routes

Separate entry arrangements have been made for general devotees to ensure smooth movement inside the temple complex.

Pilgrims will be able to offer holy water through specially designated water vessels installed in the Sabha Mandap and Kartikeya Mandapam.

During Shravan and Bhadrapada, devotees can access the temple through designated routes including:

• Nandi Gate

• Shri Mahakal Mahalok

• Mansarovar Bhavan

• Facility Centre-1

• Temple Tunnel

• Kartik Mandapam

• Ganesh Mandapam

Visitors entering through the Neelkanth Gate will be directed via Mansarovar Bhavan and the temple tunnel before exiting through the designated exit gates.

Kanwariyas Allowed to Offer Water Four Days a Week

Temple authorities have also announced a special arrangement for Kanwar pilgrims, who will be permitted to offer holy water at the shrine from Tuesday to Friday during the Sawan season, helping regulate crowds on Mondays and other peak days.

South Indian Prasad Introduced

In another initiative aimed at improving the devotee experience, the Mahakal Temple's Annakshetra has introduced South Indian meals as prasad.

The special menu will be served every Tuesday and Friday, while fasting-friendly (phalahari) meals will be available for devotees observing Sawan fasts.

As the number of visitors continues to rise, Bhopal Police has implemented a comprehensive traffic and parking plan to ensure smooth movement around the temple and minimize inconvenience to commuters. Officials expect the area to witness heavy traffic every morning, particularly during the hours when religious events attract the largest gatherings.

According to the revised traffic plan, vehicle movement between Mansarovar and Pragati Square will remain completely diverted every day from 7:00 a.m. until the conclusion of the religious programme. Authorities have appealed to residents and regular commuters to use alternative routes and cooperate with traffic personnel deployed along the diversion points.

The new traffic arrangement has been designed to maintain public safety while allowing uninterrupted movement of devotees entering and leaving the temple premises. Since the area experiences a substantial influx of private vehicles and buses during the programme, traffic regulation has become essential to prevent congestion.

Vehicles approaching from the Mansarovar side will now be diverted through Mahavir Gate, Nutan College, and Vyapam Square before proceeding toward the Board Office area. This diversion is expected to reduce pressure on roads surrounding the temple while maintaining access to nearby neighborhoods.

Traffic moving beyond the Board Office Square will be redirected through Jyoti Talkies, Chetak Bridge, ISBT, and the RRL route. These diversions have been planned to keep through traffic away from the temple zone, where pedestrian movement is expected to remain exceptionally high throughout the programme.

Authorities have also advised railway passengers to begin their journeys well in advance, as travel time to the railway station may increase due to diversions and temporary congestion. Travelers have been encouraged to follow traffic updates and select alternate routes whenever possible to avoid delays.

For motorists heading toward Narmadapuram and Mandideep, police have recommended using the GG Flyover as the preferred route during the Chaturmas period. This measure is expected to ease traffic flow while preventing unnecessary bottlenecks around the Habibganj area.

In addition to traffic diversions, a dedicated parking arrangement has been introduced for devotees attending the religious event. Four-wheelers arriving at the programme will be directed to designated parking spaces located on the left-side road of MP Nagar. Officials have clearly stated that parking vehicles along roads surrounding the temple premises will not be permitted during the event.

The parking restrictions are intended to keep emergency routes clear and ensure uninterrupted traffic movement in one of the city's busiest commercial and residential zones. Traffic personnel and volunteers will remain present to guide visitors toward authorized parking locations.

Special arrangements have also been made for buses transporting groups of devotees. Such buses will drop passengers near the Pragati Petrol Pump Square before proceeding via the Board Office route to the ISBT bus parking area, where they will remain stationed until passengers return after the religious programme. This system is expected to reduce congestion near the temple entrance while improving passenger safety.
