Andy Burnham Messaged Fake Susie Wiles: What We Know About the Report

UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham reportedly exchanged messages with a person posing as Trump chief of staff Susie Wiles, raising fresh security concerns.

UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham reportedly exchanged messages with a person posing as US President Donald Trump’s chief of staff, Susie Wiles, before becoming suspicious that the contact was not genuine, according to a report by Politico.

The reported incident has raised fresh questions over the security of communications involving senior political figures in Britain and the United States. British officials have reportedly kept details of the exchange closely guarded because of potential national security concerns.

Burnham Received Suspicious Messages

According to the report, Burnham communicated with the person impersonating Wiles after entering Downing Street. Only a small number of messages were reportedly exchanged, although the exact date and content of the communication remain unclear.

One person briefed on the exchange described it as involving only “a few messages” and said they were of “no significance”.

Downing Street has declined to comment specifically on the incident, citing its policy of not discussing national security matters.

The reported contact has nevertheless drawn attention because Burnham had apparently believed he was communicating with a senior US White House official before becoming concerned that the person on the other end was not Wiles.

British Embassy Raised Issue

The incident was reportedly serious enough for the British embassy in Washington to raise the matter with the White House, according to officials cited by Politico.

The episode has also reportedly prompted concerns within the UK government about whether Wiles’ phone or contact information may have been compromised again.

The circumstances have added sensitivity to the case because Wiles had previously been targeted in a separate impersonation incident involving senior American political and business figures.

Earlier Wiles Impersonation Case

In 2025, US authorities investigated an effort in which someone allegedly posed as Wiles and contacted senators, governors, senior business executives and other influential individuals.

The Wall Street Journal reported in May 2025 that federal authorities were examining who was behind the impersonation and what the motive may have been.

At the time, FBI officials reportedly told the White House that they did not believe a foreign government was responsible.

Wiles had also reportedly informed associates that contacts stored on her cellphone had been compromised. The device was said to be her personal phone rather than her official government handset.

How Impersonator Contacted Officials

According to reports from the earlier investigation, the impersonator used compromised contacts to approach people who would normally have been able to communicate directly with Wiles.

Some recipients reportedly became suspicious after noticing differences in the messages.

The communication style allegedly differed from Wiles’ usual manner, with unusual grammar and more formal wording. The messages were also reportedly sent from numbers that did not match Wiles’ actual phone number.

In at least one reported case, the impersonator allegedly asked the recipient to transfer money.

The person also reportedly asked questions about President Trump that Wiles, as a senior White House official, would normally have been expected to know.

Why the Burnham Case Matters

The reported communication with Burnham gives the earlier impersonation controversy an international dimension.

It remains unclear whether the person who contacted Burnham was the same individual or group involved in the earlier US incidents. The identity and motive of the person behind the messages have not been established publicly.

The episode is particularly sensitive because Burnham recently moved into Britain’s highest political office.

According to the report, the communication occurred around the period when Burnham was entering Downing Street, making the possibility of an impersonated foreign official contacting a newly installed prime minister a significant security concern.

Cybersecurity Risk for Leaders

The incident also highlights a broader vulnerability facing political leaders and senior officials: impersonation through compromised contact lists, spoofed identities and deceptive messaging.

Senior officials frequently communicate through personal and professional networks, making compromised contacts potentially valuable to people attempting to gain access to sensitive conversations or establish credibility.

Even brief exchanges can create security concerns if officials are persuaded that they are communicating with a trusted foreign counterpart.

The latest case is therefore likely to draw further attention from British and American security authorities, particularly as governments continue to deal with increasingly sophisticated attempts to impersonate senior officials.

For now, the exact content and significance of Burnham’s reported exchange remain unclear. Neither Downing Street nor the White House has publicly provided detailed confirmation of the communications.

Dimagi Naxals Explained: Kiren Rijiju Lists Three Categories After PM Modi Remark

Kiren Rijiju explained the three categories he associates with the term “dimagi Naxal” after PM Modi's Independence Day remark triggered a political controversy.

The political controversy over Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s reference to “dimagi Naxals” intensified after Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju sought to explain who the term was meant to describe.

Rijiju, in a post on X, said the expression was not aimed at Opposition leaders as a group and outlined three categories of people whom he said could fall under the description.

According to Rijiju, the term refers to people who support Maoists while rejecting the Constitution, those who back separatists and support Article 370, and individuals who advocate separating the Northeast from the rest of India through the Siliguri Corridor.

What Did PM Modi Say?

PM Modi used the expression during his Independence Day address, saying India had successfully weakened armed Naxalism but warning that its ideological influence could continue to pose a challenge.

The Prime Minister said people with a Maoist mindset had established themselves in positions of influence, including advisory roles connected with government institutions.

Modi also recalled the impact of decades of Naxal violence, saying the movement had damaged the lives and aspirations of young people and affected families across several parts of the country.

He said such ideological networks could seek opportunities to create violence and disorder and called for them to be identified and isolated.

Rijiju Defines ‘Dimagi Naxal’

Rijiju later provided a more detailed explanation of the expression.

The first category, according to the minister, consists of people who support Maoists while rejecting the Indian Constitution.

The second category includes people who support separatists and favour Article 370. The constitutional provision had provided special status to Jammu and Kashmir until the Centre's 2019 decision to remove its operative provisions and reorganise the former state into the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.

The third category identified by Rijiju concerns those who allegedly seek to separate India's northeastern region from the rest of the country through the Siliguri Corridor.

Why Siliguri Corridor Matters

The Siliguri Corridor, popularly known as the “Chicken's Neck”, is a narrow stretch of territory in West Bengal that connects India's northeastern states with the rest of the country.

The corridor has significant strategic importance because of its geographical position and its role in maintaining connectivity with the Northeast.

Rijiju also shared a video featuring jailed activist Sharjeel Imam discussing the possibility of cutting off Assam and other northeastern areas through the Siliguri Corridor.

Opposition Pushes Back

Rijiju's clarification came amid criticism from Opposition leaders who questioned the Prime Minister's use of the term.

Congress leader and former Union minister P Chidambaram responded to the controversy by saying he was “proud” to be called a “dimagi Naxal”.

Rijiju criticised Chidambaram's response, calling it unfortunate and damaging. He reiterated that Modi had not described Opposition leaders collectively as “dimagi Naxals”.

The exchange has added another layer to the political debate over the government's use of labels linked to Maoism, separatism and national security.

Article 370 Reference Draws Attention

By including support for Article 370 in his explanation, Rijiju's definition extends the term beyond the traditional context of Maoist insurgency.

Article 370 had provided Jammu and Kashmir with special constitutional provisions. The Centre's 2019 decision effectively ended the region's special status and divided the former state into two Union Territories.

The issue remains politically sensitive, with the government's position on national integration continuing to differ sharply from that of several Opposition parties.

Government- Opposition Divide

The controversy reflects a broader disagreement over how political dissent and national security concerns should be discussed.

The government has framed the issue around Maoist ideology, separatism and territorial integrity, while Opposition leaders have questioned whether such terminology risks being applied too broadly to critics of the government.

Rijiju's clarification appears aimed at narrowing the meaning of “dimagi Naxal” to specific ideological and separatist positions rather than ordinary political disagreement.

The political debate is expected to continue, particularly as both the government and Opposition seek to present their positions in the context of constitutional values, national security and freedom of political expression.

Ram Mandir Donation Row Disrupts Parliament as Kharge, Rijiju Clash in Rajya Sabha

Parliament witnessed repeated disruptions over the alleged Ram Mandir donation controversy as Mallikarjun Kharge demanded answers from the Centre and Kiren Rijiju launched a sharp counterattack.

The alleged Ram Mandir donation misappropriation issue triggered a storm in Parliament on Tuesday, leading to repeated disruptions in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha before proceedings were adjourned for the day. The controversy dominated the 12th day of the Monsoon Session as the Opposition demanded accountability, while the government accused its rivals of politicising the issue.

The sharpest exchange took place in the Rajya Sabha, where Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge questioned the Centre over the allegations involving the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju responded by accusing the Congress and its allies of hypocrisy, resulting in heated exchanges between the treasury and Opposition benches.

Kharge Questions Centre Over Allegations

Raising the issue during the proceedings, Kharge referred to allegations of embezzlement involving cash donations, jewellery and land linked to the Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust.

He argued that the trust was constituted by the Central Government and entrusted with more than 70 acres of land for the construction and management of the Ram Mandir. He also noted that the Prime Minister and the Union Government had been associated with every major milestone of the temple project.

Questioning the role of central investigative agencies, Kharge asked where the Enforcement Directorate (ED), Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and other agencies were, and demanded that the government respond to the allegations in Parliament.

Government Launches Counterattack

Responding to the Opposition's charges, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju strongly rejected the allegations and accused the Congress and the Samajwadi Party of attempting to mislead the country.

Rijiju alleged that parties now raising questions had opposed the Ram Mandir movement for years and had criticised the temple even after its construction.

He said those who had opposed Lord Ram could not now claim to be concerned about the temple's affairs and accused the Opposition of shedding "crocodile tears" for political gain. He also demanded that they apologise to the nation before seeking answers from the government.

Repeated Disruptions in Both Houses

The issue sparked loud sloganeering and protests from members of both the ruling alliance and the Opposition.

Opposition MPs from the Congress, Samajwadi Party (SP), Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and other INDIA bloc parties staged protests inside and outside Parliament over the alleged donation irregularities.

The continued disruptions forced the Lok Sabha to adjourn shortly after reconvening in the afternoon, while the Rajya Sabha also witnessed repeated interruptions before being adjourned for the day.

Other Business Amid Protests

Despite the protests, the government managed to conduct limited legislative business.

The Lok Sabha passed the Appropriation (No. 3) Bill, 2026 by voice vote and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharamanintroduced the Taxation and Other Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026.

In the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai introduced the Registration of Births and Deaths (Amendment) Bill, 2026, which proposes stricter rules for delayed registration of births and deaths by requiring approval from a Judicial Magistrate First Class if registration is sought more than two years after the event.

Meanwhile, outside Parliament, DMK MPs protested over the Cauvery water dispute, while Congress MPs led by Deepender Hooda demanded that Haryana be considered to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games.

Political Flashpoint Continues

The Ram Mandir donation controversy has emerged as one of the most contentious issues of the ongoing Monsoon Session, with both the government and the Opposition refusing to soften their positions.

While the Opposition has demanded a detailed explanation from the Centre regarding the allegations linked to the temple trust, the government maintains that the issue is being used to create political controversy around a matter of faith.

With Parliament set to reconvene on Wednesday, the issue is expected to remain at the centre of political debate.

The Madras High Court on Tuesday directed that DMK leader and former Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin be released on the same day after questioning, following his detention over controversial remarks allegedly made during a public rally in Tamil Nadu.

The Tamil Nadu government informed the High Court that it had no intention of keeping Udhayanidhi in custody and that he would be granted station bail after the required questioning.

The development came hours after police detained the senior DMK leader in connection with a case registered over comments allegedly referring to actor Trisha Krishnan, which sparked political outrage and protests across the state.

Government Assures Court of Release

During the hearing before Justice G.K. Ilanthiraiyan, Advocate General Vijay Narayan informed the court that the detention was temporary and that the State would release Udhayanidhi after questioning.

The Advocate General told the court that the police action had been taken in the interest of women and clarified that there was no proposal to keep the DMK leader in judicial custody.

Accepting the submission, the court directed that he be released on station bail after the inquiry.

Controversy Over Rally Remarks

The controversy began during a rally on the Cauvery water dispute in Thanjavur on Monday.

While addressing the gathering and criticising Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, sections of the crowd reportedly chanted the name of actor Trisha.

According to the complaint, Udhayanidhi responded by saying, "Whether the water reaches elsewhere or not, it must definitely reach there."

Opposition parties alleged that the statement carried a double meaning and amounted to an insult to women.

Udhayanidhi, however, maintained that he was referring only to the waters of the Cauvery River and rejected the allegations of making an objectionable remark.

Case Registered Under Multiple Laws

Police registered a case against the DMK leader under several provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act, and the Information Technology Act.

Following the registration of the FIR, Udhayanidhi had also approached the Madras High Court seeking anticipatory bail.

He was taken into custody by the Thanjavur East Police before being transported towards Thanjavur for questioning.

Political Reactions Intensify

The detention triggered sharp political reactions across Tamil Nadu.

Several DMK workers staged protests outside Udhayanidhi's residence and the Madras High Court, while some demonstrations reportedly turned violent, with protesters burning effigies and raising slogans against the police.

Senior DMK leaders defended Udhayanidhi, alleging that the controversy was being deliberately politicised to divert attention from the Cauvery water dispute and issues affecting farmers.

The party also claimed that the police action was politically motivated.

Opposition Demands Action

Leaders from opposition parties, including the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and other political outfits, criticised Udhayanidhi's remarks.

Several leaders described the alleged comments as inappropriate and offensive to women, while BJP leaders demanded an unconditional public apology and strict legal action.

The controversy has also revived public discussion surrounding long-standing speculation linking actor Trisha Krishnanand actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay, although neither has ever publicly commented on such reports.

Issue Likely to Continue

Although the High Court's intervention ensured Udhayanidhi's release after questioning, the legal proceedings in the case will continue.

With both the ruling DMK and Opposition parties hardening their positions, the controversy is expected to remain a major political issue in Tamil Nadu in the coming days.

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal and senior party leaders staged a sit-in protest in the national capital on Tuesday after Delhi Police stopped their march towards the Prime Minister's residence over the Centre's E20 fuel policy.

The protest, held on Firoz Shah Road, saw Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia and other AAP leaders accusing the Union government of ignoring public concerns over ethanol-blended fuel. The party claimed it was carrying petitions signed by more than two lakh people demanding a review of the policy.

Police Stop March to PM's Residence

AAP leaders had planned to march to the Prime Minister's residence to submit a memorandum against the E20 policy.

However, Delhi Police halted the procession before it reached its destination, following which Kejriwal and several party leaders sat on the road in protest.

The party said it had informed the police in advance about its programme and maintained that the march was intended only to submit public petitions to the Prime Minister.

Kejriwal Seeks Meeting With PM

Addressing supporters before and during the protest, Kejriwal said he had written to Prime Minister Narendra Modiseeking an appointment to discuss concerns over E20 fuel but had not received a response.

He said the AAP wanted to hand over petitions signed by over two lakh citizens and urged the Prime Minister to meet the delegation.

Kejriwal also reiterated the party's demand that fuel stations continue to provide both conventional petrol and E20 fuel, while calling for a reduction in the price of ethanol-blended petrol.

Allegations Over Ethanol Policy

During the protest, Kejriwal alleged that the Centre was importing ethanol from the United States under pressure from US President Donald Trump.

He claimed that ethanol imported from the US was being imposed on Indian consumers and alleged that the policy could adversely affect a large number of existing vehicles.

The AAP chief described the issue as one that could trigger a nationwide public movement and said a campaign "bigger than the NEET protests" would be required to force the government to reconsider its policy.

These allegations have been made by the AAP leadership. The Union government has not accepted these claims.

AAP Says Public Concerns Ignored

AAP leaders accompanying the protest claimed that many vehicle owners had reported problems linked to the use of E20 fuel.

Delhi AAP president Saurabh Bhardwaj said the party had repeatedly appealed for dialogue with the Centre and accused the government of refusing to engage with citizens on the issue.

AAP leader Anurag Dhanda also alleged that crores of vehicles could be affected by the policy and urged the Centre to reconsider its implementation.

BJP Rejects Allegations

The Bharatiya Janata Party dismissed the AAP's campaign, calling it politically motivated.

BJP MP Tarun Chugh described the protest as "absurd" and said the ethanol blending programme had been introduced after scientific evaluation.

He argued that ethanol blending benefits farmers by increasing demand for agricultural produce used in ethanol production and accused the AAP of spreading misinformation.

Debate Over E20 Policy Continues

The protest comes amid growing political debate over the rollout of E20 petrol, following recent government acknowledgements that prolonged use of E20 fuel may require replacement of certain rubber components in older BS-III vehicles, though authorities have clarified that engine replacement is not required.

With the AAP stepping up its campaign and the BJP defending the policy, the issue is expected to remain a key political flashpoint in the coming weeks.

PM Modi's Forgiveness Appeal for Jantar Mantar Protesters Receives Cross-Party Support

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's call to forgive young protesters involved in the Jantar Mantar controversy receives support from leaders across political parties, shifting the debate towards counselling instead of punishment.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal to forgive young protesters accused of making abusive remarks against him and his late mother has sparked widespread political reactions, with leaders from several parties backing his message of guidance over punishment. The remarks have also shifted the national conversation surrounding the recent Jantar Mantar protest from calls for strict action to a broader debate on counselling and rehabilitation.

The Prime Minister made the appeal in a video message after controversial slogans and remarks were allegedly raised during a protest linked to the NEET paper leak issue at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi. While condemning the language used, he urged society to respond with compassion rather than retribution.

PM Advocates Guidance Over Punishment

Addressing the incident, PM Modi said the abusive remarks directed at him and his late mother were unacceptable and did not reflect the values of a civilised society. However, he stressed that legal action or public humiliation would not necessarily help young people who had gone astray.

Instead, he appealed to society to forgive them and help them return to the right path.

Using a simple analogy, the Prime Minister compared the relationship between the tongue and teeth, saying that even when the tongue gets hurt, people do not break their own teeth because both belong together. Similarly, he said, the country's youth are part of society and deserve guidance rather than rejection.

BJP Targets Congress Over Student Movement

The Prime Minister's remarks were followed by fresh political reactions, with the Bharatiya Janata Party renewing its criticism of the Congress over its alleged role in the student movement.

Bihar BJP president Sanjay Saraogi described PM Modi's response as an example of generosity and restraint. He said the Prime Minister had displayed a "big heart" by choosing forgiveness despite the offensive remarks directed at him.

Saraogi also accused the Congress of attempting to use student protests for political gains instead of addressing genuine concerns.

Leaders Across Parties Welcome Appeal

Support for the Prime Minister's statement came from leaders belonging to different political parties.

Uttar Pradesh Cabinet Minister Om Prakash Rajbhar said students who had taken the wrong path should be counselled instead of being punished. He maintained that governments and society should focus on helping young people reconnect with education and development rather than pushing them further away.

Rashtriya Lok Dal national general secretary Malook Nagar described the Prime Minister's message as one that placed the country's youth above political differences. According to him, the decision reflected responsible leadership and encouraged a constructive approach towards the younger generation.

Meanwhile, Nationalist Congress Party national working president Praful Patel said young people can sometimes make mistakes because of emotional reactions or external influence. He called PM Modi's response an act of magnanimity and said India's democratic system must continue to move forward by carrying everyone together.

Focus Shifts to Rehabilitation

The Prime Minister's remarks have changed the tone of the political discussion surrounding the Jantar Mantar protest. Instead of focusing solely on punishment, several political leaders have emphasized counselling, social responsibility and rehabilitation for young protesters.

The comments also came after police registered a Zero FIR over the alleged objectionable remarks made during the demonstration. While the legal process remains underway, political attention has increasingly centred on how society should respond to such incidents involving students and young participants.

Broader Debate Continues

The Jantar Mantar protest, initially organised over issues related to the NEET examination controversy, has evolved into a wider political issue following the controversial remarks and the Prime Minister's response.

With leaders from both the ruling alliance and its allies endorsing a conciliatory approach, the debate now extends beyond accountability to questions about youth engagement, responsible political discourse and the role of society in guiding future generations.

Datia Bypoll Results: Congress Leads BJP by 308 Votes After Five Rounds

Congress has taken a 308-vote lead over BJP after five rounds of counting in the Datia Assembly by-election, while candidate Ghanshyam Singh claims a victory margin of up to 15,000 votes.

The Congress gained a narrow lead in the Datia Assembly by-election after the completion of the fifth round of counting on Monday, moving ahead of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) by 308 votes in a closely contested electoral battle.

According to the latest counting trends, the Congress maintained a slender advantage as officials continued the counting process at the Government Polytechnic College in Datia. A total of 15 rounds of counting are scheduled, with nearly 350 officials and employees deployed to oversee the exercise.

Congress Moves Ahead

By the end of the fifth round, the Congress had secured a lead of 308 votes over the BJP.

In the fifth round alone, the BJP received 4,282 votes, while the Congress secured 3,757 votes. The Azad Samaj Party (ASP) polled 1,978 votes during the round.

Congress candidate Ghanshyam Singh expressed confidence in the party's prospects, claiming that the lead would widen significantly once votes from urban areas were counted.

"We are confident of winning by 12,000 to 15,000 votes. Counting from the city areas will begin from the sixth round, which will further strengthen our position," he said while interacting with reporters.

BJP Confident Despite Early Deficit

Senior BJP leader and former Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Narottam Mishra remained optimistic despite the Congress taking the lead.

"Our hard work will certainly yield results," Mishra said, dismissing Congress allegations of internal sabotage and asserting that the BJP remained confident of retaining the seat.

Responding to Congress claims of factionalism, Mishra remarked that allegations of infighting were "nothing new" for former Congress MLA Rajendra Bharti, whose conviction had led to the by-election.

Political Significance of the Bypoll

The Datia Assembly seat fell vacant after former Congress MLA Rajendra Bharti was sentenced to two years' imprisonment in the Cooperative Rural Development Bank fraud case, leading to his disqualification.

In the 2023 Madhya Pradesh Assembly election, Bharti had defeated then Home Minister Narottam Mishra by a margin of 7,742 votes, making the by-election politically significant for both major parties.

Congress Internal Rift Surfaces

The bypoll has also been marked by internal tensions within the Congress. Just a day before counting, the party suspended former MLA Rajendra Bharti from its primary membership following complaints from party candidate Ghanshyam Singh, who accused him of anti-party activities during the campaign.

Leader of Opposition Umang Singhar said voters had backed the Congress because of public dissatisfaction with the BJP government, expressing confidence that the final verdict would favour his party.

Meanwhile, Rajendra Bharti rejected the allegations, claiming Ghanshyam Singh was making excuses in anticipation of defeat.

Counting Continues

Polling for the Datia by-election recorded 71.44 per cent voter turnout, nearly nine percentage points lower than the turnout recorded during the 2023 Assembly election.

Election officials said counting is progressing peacefully under tight security, with results expected after the completion of all 15 rounds.

Political observers are closely tracking the outcome, which is being viewed as an important test for both the ruling BJP and the Congress ahead of future electoral contests in Madhya Pradesh.

Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former Madhya Pradesh minister Paras Jain passed away on Monday morning at the age of 77 after embracing Santhara (Sallekhana), the Jain religious vow of voluntary fasting in the final stage of life. He had been undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Indore and had reportedly taken Santhara three days before his demise.

His death has prompted an outpouring of condolences from political leaders, social organisations and supporters across the state.

According to family members, Jain's mortal remains are being brought from Indore to Ujjain. His final journey will begin at 2 pm from his residence in Arihant Nagar on Hira Mill Road, where a large number of party workers and well-wishers are expected to gather.

Chief Minister to Attend Funeral

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav is scheduled to reach Ujjain around 1 pm to pay his final respects before the last rites.

Arrangements have been made outside Jain's residence as supporters, relatives and BJP leaders continue to arrive to offer tributes.

Embraced Santhara Before Death

Family sources said Paras Jain had accepted Santhara (Sallekhana), a revered Jain spiritual practice observed during the final phase of life through voluntary renunciation of food and water with complete religious discipline.

They also informed that Jain had pledged eye donation, body donation and skin donation during his lifetime. As per his wishes, the donation procedures will be completed before the cremation.

Six-Time MLA from Ujjain North

Paras Jain remained one of the BJP's most recognised faces in the Malwa region. He represented the Ujjain North Assembly constituency six times and served as a minister in the Madhya Pradesh government.

He first became a minister in 2004 under the cabinet headed by former Chief Minister Babulal Gaur. Active in electoral politics since 1990, Jain earned a reputation as an accessible public representative with a strong grassroots connect.

Although the BJP denied him a ticket in the 2023 Madhya Pradesh Assembly elections, he continued to remain associated with organisational and public activities.

A Politician with a Wrestler's Discipline

Apart from his political career, Paras Jain was widely known for his disciplined lifestyle and passion for wrestling.

Even in his late sixties, he maintained a rigorous fitness routine and regularly visited local akharas whenever his schedule permitted. He devoted nearly an hour every morning to physical exercise.

His daily post-workout diet reportedly included papaya, soaked almonds, walnuts, a bowl of fenugreek seeds and a glass of milk, reflecting the disciplined lifestyle he followed throughout his public life.

Condolences Pour In

Leaders from the BJP, social organisations and residents of Ujjain expressed grief over Jain's demise, describing him as a dedicated public servant who remained connected with people throughout his political journey.

With his passing, Madhya Pradesh has lost one of its senior political leaders whose career spanned more than three decades in public life.

The West Bengal government has announced that all pending applications under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) will be processed within the next six months, with the state administration asserting that the law is intended to grant citizenship rather than revoke it.

Speaking at a citizenship certificate distribution programme in New Town on Saturday, Suvendu Adhikari said the implementation of the CAA had formally begun in the state and that eligible applicants would receive citizenship after completion of the prescribed process.

Around 300 members of the Matua community from North 24 Parganas were handed citizenship certificates during the event.

'CAA Grants Citizenship, Does Not Take It Away'

Addressing beneficiaries, the Chief Minister said the Citizenship Amendment Act was enacted to provide Indian citizenship to eligible refugees and should not be viewed as a law that strips existing citizens of their nationality.

He also alleged that the previous Trinamool Congress (TMC) government had created confusion regarding the legislation for political reasons.

Over 2.3 Lakh Applications Received

According to the Chief Minister, 2,30,605 applications have been received under the Citizenship Amendment Act across West Bengal.

He said 23,956 citizenship certificates have been issued so far, including 5,966 certificates distributed during the past 11 weeks.

District-wise, Nadia has recorded the highest number of beneficiaries, with 10,191 certificates issued, followed by North 24 Parganas, where 8,930 applicants have received citizenship documents.

State Begins CAA Implementation Process

The Chief Minister said the state has initiated the legal process for implementing the Citizenship Amendment Act and assured eligible applicants that they would receive protection under the law.

He stated that people belonging to communities covered under the Act who entered India before the prescribed cut-off date would be eligible to apply for citizenship through the online application process.

Border Security Measures Announced

The Chief Minister also announced that the state government had handed over 27 kilometres of land along the India-Bangladesh border to the Border Security Force (BSF) for fencing and security infrastructure.

He said the remaining land transfer process would be completed within two weeks and assured that additional land required for border security would also be made available whenever necessary.

What the Citizenship Amendment Act Provides

The Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) provides a pathway to Indian citizenship for members of the Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi and Christian communities who migrated to India from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistanafter facing religious persecution and entered the country before the notified cut-off date under the Act.

Eligible applicants are required to submit their applications online. Under the Act, the minimum residency requirement for eligible refugees has been reduced from 11 years to five years.

The implementation of the CAA has remained a politically significant issue in West Bengal, where refugee communities, particularly the Matua community, constitute an important voter base.

A Surat-based Right to Information (RTI) activist has sought an official investigation into the financial background of Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke and his family, raising questions about the funding of his higher education in the United States and the functioning of the organisation.

The complaints have been submitted to the Maharashtra government, the Election Commission of India (ECI) and the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC), seeking inquiries into the family's income, assets and CJP's financial operations.

Questions Raised Over US Education Funding

RTI activist Amit Tiwari has alleged that Abhijeet Dipke's father, Bhagwanrao Dipke, worked as a Junior Engineer (JE) with the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) and reportedly earned a monthly salary of around ₹60,000 to ₹65,000.

In his complaint, Tiwari has asked authorities to examine how the family financed the higher education of their children in the United States based on their declared income.

He has also urged the Maharashtra government to verify the family's income sources and assets.

Seeks Inquiry Into CJP's Functioning

The activist has further alleged that the Cockroach Janata Party is functioning as a political organisation without being registered with the Election Commission while collecting public donations.

In his representation to the ECI, Tiwari requested the Commission to examine whether CJP should be registered as a political party under Section 29A of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, if it is operating as one and raising public funds.

Complaint Over ₹1 Crore Legal Defence Fund

In a separate complaint submitted to the CBIC, Tiwari questioned the ₹1 crore contribution announced by Rajya Sabha MP and senior advocate Kapil Sibal towards the CJP Legal Defence Fund.

He has sought an examination of whether the contribution attracts 18% Goods and Services Tax (GST) under applicable laws.

The activist also alleged that although CJP initially campaigned on the NEET paper leak issue, its activities later expanded beyond student-related concerns. He further claimed that complaints had been submitted regarding remarks allegedly made during protests against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, his late mother and his alleged foreign connections.

These allegations have been made by the complainant and have not been independently verified or adjudicated by the authorities.

Legal Defence Fund Announced for Students

On July 27, the Cockroach Janata Party announced the creation of a Legal Defence Fund to provide legal assistance to students facing criminal cases related to protests over the alleged NEET paper leak.

During the announcement, Kapil Sibal pledged ₹1 crore to the fund and appealed to lawyers across the country to contribute.

According to CJP spokesperson Saurav Das, the fund was established amid concerns that students could face criminal proceedings despite assurances from the Union government. He said the organisation was coordinating with Supreme Court lawyers to provide legal representation.

About Abhijeet Dipke

Abhijeet Dipke, 30, is a digital media strategist from Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra. He studied journalism in Pune and is currently pursuing a Master's degree in Public Relations at Boston University in the United States. He has previously worked with the Aam Aadmi Party.

Former Peruvian President Ollanta Humala has been released from prison after Peru's Constitutional Court overturned his 15-year sentence in a money laundering case linked to the sprawling Odebrecht corruption scandal.

Humala, who served as Peru's president from 2011 to 2016, walked free from a prison facility in Lima on Friday evening under police escort after a criminal court ordered his immediate release following the Constitutional Court's ruling.

Supporters gathered outside the prison to welcome the 64-year-old former army officer, whose conviction had made him the first former Peruvian president to stand trial in the high-profile Odebrecht corruption investigation.

Conviction Set Aside

Humala and his wife, Nadine Heredia, were convicted last year on charges of receiving illegal campaign contributions from Brazilian construction giant Odebrecht and the Venezuelan government during two presidential election campaigns.

However, Peru's Constitutional Court ruled that the conviction was legally invalid, effectively nullifying the sentence. Following the ruling, a lower criminal court directed prison authorities to release the former president.

Humala Denies Wrongdoing

Speaking to reporters after his release, Humala maintained his innocence, alleging that he and his family had been subjected to political and judicial persecution.

"We have been victims of political and judicial persecution," he said.

After returning to his home in Lima, Humala again denied ever receiving campaign funds from either Brazil or Venezuela, insisting the prosecution was politically motivated.

His wife Nadine Heredia remains in Brazil after seeking asylum there following her conviction.

Major Corruption Scandal

The Odebrecht investigation has become one of Latin America's largest corruption probes, implicating politicians and public officials across the region.

In Peru alone, the scandal has affected several former presidents, including Alejandro Toledo, Martín Vizcarra, and Pedro Castillo.

All four former leaders have faced legal proceedings linked to corruption allegations involving the Brazilian construction company.

Government Reacts

Peru's Foreign Minister Carlos Espa welcomed the Constitutional Court's decision, describing it as fair.

The ruling comes under the administration of President Keiko Fujimori, who herself has previously faced legal proceedings over alleged campaign financing linked to Odebrecht. Those proceedings were later annulled after she spent more than a year in pre-trial detention.

Ironically, Humala had defeated Fujimori in the 2011 presidential runoff to become Peru's head of state.

Odebrecht's Global Impact

The Odebrecht scandal remains one of the largest international corruption cases in modern history. In 2016, the Brazilian construction company agreed to pay approximately $3.5 billion in penalties after admitting it had paid $788 million in bribes to politicians and government officials across several countries in exchange for lucrative public infrastructure contracts.

The company acknowledged paying at least $29 million in bribes to Peruvian officials between 2005 and 2014, triggering widespread investigations that reshaped Peru's political landscape.

Humala's release marks another significant development in the long-running corruption saga, though legal and political debates surrounding the Odebrecht scandal continue to influence Peru's judicial and political institutions.

Nepal Communal Violence Highlights Institutional Crisis and Governance Challenges

Nepal's recent communal violence has reignited debate over governance failures, delayed government response and the urgent need for stronger institutions to prevent future unrest.

The recent communal violence in Nepal has once again exposed the country's fragile governance system, raising questions over the state's ability to prevent local disputes from escalating into wider security crises. While the immediate trigger involved tensions during a Hindu religious procession in Sunsari district, analysts argue that the deeper problem lies in weak institutions, delayed government intervention and inadequate crisis management rather than religious divisions alone.

Violence that began in Sunsari quickly spread to parts of Madhesh Province, including Siraha and Dhanusha districts, leaving at least three people dead and prompting authorities to impose curfews across multiple areas. The unrest reportedly stemmed from disagreements over loudspeakers and religious flags during a procession, but the rapid escalation highlighted significant shortcomings in local conflict resolution mechanisms.

Prime Minister Balendra Shah, who had largely remained out of the public spotlight since assuming office in March, addressed the nation only after several days of violence. In his televised appeal, he urged citizens to maintain peace, exercise restraint and preserve communal harmony while assuring that the government would investigate the incidents.

However, critics have questioned the timing of the government's response, arguing that delayed political leadership allowed tensions to intensify. Political observers note that swift intervention during the initial stages of communal disputes often prevents them from spreading, whereas prolonged official silence can create uncertainty and deepen public mistrust.

The violence has also renewed concerns over Nepal's administrative preparedness. Experts believe the country lacks an effective early-warning mechanism capable of identifying and addressing local communal flashpoints before they develop into larger law-and-order challenges.

Another major issue attracting attention is the police action during the unrest. Reports indicate that the first fatality occurred during police firing in Sunsari. The government has announced an investigation into the incident and promised transparency in determining the circumstances surrounding the use of force.

Nevertheless, skepticism remains high due to Nepal's history of inquiries that have produced limited accountability. Analysts warn that unless investigations result in clear findings and concrete action, public confidence in state institutions could weaken further.

The opposition has also criticised the government's handling of the crisis, pointing out that President Ramchandra Paudel and opposition lawmakers reacted publicly before the Prime Minister issued his first statement. According to political commentators, effective governance requires timely communication during emergencies to reassure citizens and prevent misinformation.

The latest unrest comes against the backdrop of frequent political instability in Nepal, where repeated changes in government have often disrupted administrative continuity. Governance experts argue that sustained institutional reforms—including stronger local mediation systems, improved policing, faster crisis response mechanisms and greater administrative accountability—are essential to reducing the likelihood of similar incidents in the future.

While curfews and security deployments have helped restore order in the affected districts, observers believe long-term stability will depend on rebuilding public trust in state institutions rather than relying solely on emergency restrictions.

The communal violence has therefore become more than a law-and-order challenge. It has evolved into a broader test of Nepal's governance capacity, highlighting the urgent need for institutional reforms that can respond effectively to social tensions before they escalate into national crises.
