Ujjain's Mahakal Temple strictly enforces a 3-month restriction on Bhasma Aarti bookings per mobile number. Protocol and VIP entries are also included.

In a bid to curb irregularities and ensure fair access, the Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple Management Committee has strictly enforced a rolling cap on the highly sought-after Bhasma Aarti bookings. Under the revised enforcement, devotees will now be allowed to secure a Bhasma Aarti permit only once every three months using a single mobile number.

Crucially, this restriction will explicitly apply to VIP and protocol routes as well. Temple sources revealed that certain mobile numbers linked to protocol requests were being repeatedly used to secure monthly permits—a practice that stands completely blocked under the refreshed system. While the temple administration maintains that this framework existed in the rulebook, officials conceded that it is now being implemented with zero exceptions.

Curbing Middlemen and Addressing Cadre Exploitation

The administrative clampdown comes on the heels of mounting complaints regarding ticket hoarding and the alleged exploitation of the booking system by unauthorized agents. Until about two years ago, the booking window opened 15 days in advance online with no mobile-specific restrictions, leaving the system vulnerable to automated cornering of slots.

This is not the first time the administration has attempted to patch these loopholes. Back in 2024, following a barrage of complaints, the then-District Collector Neeraj Singh had introduced a dual-lock system tying one Aadhaar card and one mobile number to a strict 90-day cooling-off period. Though the measure successfully checked erratic bookings initially, enforcement gradually phased out over the subsequent months, leading to a resurgence of repeat bookings.

Standardized System with Zero VIP Loopholes

The reinstated rule completely eliminates arbitrary interventions, forcing both online applicants and protocol-linked desks to undergo systemic verification. Devotees who previously managed to leverage VIP networks or official influence to attend the dawn ritual month-after-month will now have to wait out the mandatory three-month window like general line pilgrims.

"This policy is not entirely new; rather, it is a much more aggressive and technically watertight enforcement of an existing guidelines. The booking software has been updated so that a flagged mobile number cannot be reused within the 90-day window under any quota." — Pratham Kaushik, Administrator, Mahakal Temple Committee

The pre-dawn Bhasma Aarti, where the deity is worshipped with sacred ash, remains the most popular ritual at the Ujjain temple, attracting thousands of cross-country travelers daily. With the automated system rejecting repeated mobile digits, temple officials believe the move will significantly ease the artificial crunch of permits, freeing up slots for first-time visitors and genuine devotees who often wait months for a single slot.
