Bengaluru Court Issues Non-Bailable Warrant Against Prakash Raj in Voter ID Case

The actor failed to appear before the court in a case alleging possession of voter identity cards in multiple states, prompting the issuance of a non-bailable warrant.

A Bengaluru court has issued a non-bailable warrant (NBW) against actor Prakash Raj after he repeatedly failed to appear in connection with a case related to alleged multiple voter registrations. The development has brought renewed attention to electoral compliance laws and the legal obligations of public figures facing judicial proceedings.

The order was passed by the 48th Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM) Court in Bengaluru after the actor reportedly did not respond to multiple court summons issued in the matter. Authorities are now expected to take steps to secure his appearance before the court so that the proceedings can continue.

Allegations Over Multiple Voter IDs

The case originates from a complaint filed by advocate Dilip Kumar, who alleged that Prakash Raj possesses voter identity cards in more than one Indian state. According to the complaint, the actor is registered as a voter in Karnataka, Telangana, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.

The complainant had earlier approached local authorities and the Election Commission of India seeking action regarding the alleged violation. After administrative channels failed to resolve the issue, the matter was brought before the judiciary.

Reports indicate that the complaint questions whether multiple voter registrations exist simultaneously, which would be contrary to electoral regulations that permit an individual to be registered as a voter in only one constituency at a time.

Court Takes Strong View

The Bengaluru court reportedly issued several notices and summons to Prakash Raj before taking the latest step. However, after repeated non-appearance during scheduled hearings, the magistrate decided to issue a non-bailable warrant.

Legal experts note that such warrants are generally issued when a court believes a person's presence is necessary for the continuation of proceedings and previous notices have not resulted in compliance.

The warrant does not constitute a finding of guilt but is intended to ensure the accused appears before the court.

Case Still Under Judicial Review

At present, the allegations against Prakash Raj remain unproven. No court has yet determined whether the actor violated any election-related laws.

According to legal procedures, the actor will have an opportunity to present his side of the case and challenge the allegations once he appears before the court. The judicial process will examine relevant records, voter registration details and submissions from both parties before reaching any conclusion.

Electoral Compliance in Focus

The case has also highlighted the importance of maintaining accurate voter records. Election laws require citizens to be enrolled in only one electoral constituency, and duplicate registrations are subject to scrutiny by election authorities.

Officials periodically conduct verification drives to identify and remove duplicate voter entries. Cases involving public personalities often attract wider public attention because of their visibility and influence.
