In a shocking incident, two minor cousin sisters from the Laur area of Rewa district consumed poisonous substance together, leaving their families devastated and authorities probing the matter.

The girls, both aged 15, were rushed to Sanjay Gandhi Hospital on Thursday morning after their condition deteriorated rapidly. Doctors later shifted them to the ICU at the medical college for intensive care, where a team of doctors is closely monitoring them. Their condition is reported to be serious.

The incident has been registered as a medico-legal case (MLC). Police have been informed and have begun preliminary inquiries.

According to family members, the two girls suddenly fell ill after consuming the poisonous substance. They were immediately brought to the hospital, but the exact reason behind their extreme step is not yet known. “We have no idea why they did this,” relatives told police. Both girls are currently unable to speak, making it difficult to understand what triggered the incident.

Police said they are questioning family members and gathering more details from the locality. “We will know the full circumstances only after proper investigation and once the girls are able to give their statements,” an officer said.

The Laur area falls under the jurisdiction of the local police station, which has taken cognisance of the case. So far, no suicide note or specific cause has come to light. Officers are exploring possibilities of academic pressure, personal issues, or any family-related problems, though nothing has been confirmed yet.

Incidents of minors taking such desperate steps have been reported occasionally in the region, often linked to silent mental health struggles or sudden emotional distress. However, both girls attempting it together has left the local community stunned.

Doctors have not yet revealed the exact nature of the poisonous substance, but treatment is focused on stabilising the girls. Their condition remains critical, and further updates will depend on how they respond to treatment in the next few hours.

The district administration and child welfare officials have also been alerted. Police said the investigation is ongoing and more details are awaited once the girls regain consciousness or family members provide additional information.

This case has once again highlighted the need for better mental health awareness and support systems for adolescents in smaller towns and rural areas of Madhya Pradesh.
