Afghanistan secured direct qualification for the 2027 ODI World Cup after defeating Ireland by three wickets in the third ODI in Belfast on Monday.

Afghanistan opted to bowl first and dismissed Ireland for 206 runs in 46.3 overs. The visitors then chased down the target in 44.5 overs, finishing on 207 for seven.

All-rounder Rashid Khan played the decisive role in the tense chase. He remained unbeaten on 37 runs from 43 ballsand also claimed three wickets, earning the Player of the Match award.

Afghanistan appeared to be under pressure during the chase after losing their seventh wicket at 176.

Rashid, however, held his nerve and took responsibility for finishing the match. He struck four boundaries during his unbeaten innings and combined with Yamin Ahmadzai to take Afghanistan across the finish line.

Yamin stayed unbeaten on four from 26 balls as the pair guided Afghanistan to 207 for seven in 44.5 overs.

The victory also completed Afghanistan's second successive win over Ireland in the ODI series and provided the qualification boost the team needed.

How Afghanistan Qualified

Afghanistan's qualification is linked to the ICC ODI rankings and the cutoff date for direct qualification.

The team is currently ranked eighth in the ODI rankings. By securing the required results against Ireland, Afghanistan is set to remain inside the top eight until September 30, 2026, the cutoff date used for direct qualification for the 2027 ODI World Cup.

The top-ranked teams at the cutoff will qualify directly, while teams outside the qualifying positions will have to go through the qualification route.

Afghanistan's victory therefore guarantees its place in the 2027 tournament.

West Indies Face Qualifiers

Afghanistan's qualification also means that the West Indies will have to enter the World Cup qualifiers.

The West Indies are currently ranked 10th in the ODI standings. Even victories in their upcoming two-match ODI series against India would not be enough to take them into the top eight by the qualification cutoff, according to the current qualification scenario.

The development is a setback for the two-time ODI World Cup champions, who will now have to negotiate the qualifying pathway to secure a place at the 2027 tournament.

After helping Afghanistan restrict Ireland to 206, the leg-spinner returned to the middle during a difficult chase and remained unbeaten until the winning runs were scored.

The 2027 ICC Men's ODI World Cup will be staged across 12 venues in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia, with South Africa hosting matches at eight stadiums, the International Cricket Council announced on Thursday. The marquee 50-over tournament will return to Africa after a gap of 24 years and feature 57 matches under a new three-stage format. South Africa last co-hosted the men's ODI World Cup in 2003 alongside Zimbabwe and Kenya. This time, eight South African cities, three venues in Zimbabwe and Namibia's capital Windhoek will welcome teams during one of international cricket's biggest tournaments. The venues were formally unveiled at an event in Johannesburg attended by several prominent African cricketers, including Graeme Smith, Makhaya Ntini, Hashim Amla, Temba Bavuma and Kagiso Rabada from South Africa, along with Zimbabwe's Hamilton Masakadza and Namibia's Rudolf Jansen van Vuuren.

South Africa's eight venues will be the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg, Centurion in Tshwane, Newlands Cricket Ground in Cape Town, Kingsmead Cricket Ground in Durban, St George's Park in Gqeberha, Mangaung Oval in Bloemfontein, Boland Park in Paarl and Buffalo Park in KuGompo City, formerly known as East London. Zimbabwe will host matches at the Harare Sports Club in Harare, Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo and the newly constructed Fale Mosi-oa-Tunya International Cricket Stadium in Victoria Falls. Namibia's matches will be staged at the Namibia Cricket Ground in Windhoek. ICC chairman Jay Shah described the return of the tournament to Africa after more than two decades as a landmark moment for cricket. He said the three host countries were expected to showcase the region's passion, warmth and diversity while delivering a memorable World Cup. The tournament's return is particularly significant for South Africa and Zimbabwe, which were also part of the hosting arrangement when the World Cup was last played on the continent in 2003.

The 2027 ODI World Cup format will also be different, with 57 matches spread across three stages. According to the structure announced, a Super Series will first involve the teams ranked from 12th to 14th in a round-robin competition, with the winner progressing to the next stage. A 30-match round will then feature 12 teams divided into two groups of six, with each group following a round-robin format. The top three teams from each group, along with the next best-placed team across the groups, will progress to the Super 7 stage. That phase will feature another 21 round-robin matches. The four highest-ranked teams in the Super 7 will then qualify for the semi-finals. The team finishing first will face the fourth-placed side, while the second and third-placed teams will meet in the other semi-final, with the winners advancing to the World Cup final. The expanded structure is intended to increase competitiveness and give teams more meaningful matches during the tournament. With iconic grounds such as the Wanderers, Newlands and Kingsmead joined by newer venues including Victoria Falls, the 2027 edition will mark the return of cricket's premier 50-over competition to African soil for the first time in nearly a quarter of a century.

In a statement bound to ruffle feathers within the Indian cricket fraternity, former Indian batsman turned commentator Sanjay Manjrekar has openly opposed considering veteran opener Rohit Sharma for India's 2027 ODI World Cup campaign.

Manjrekar's blunt assessment comes right ahead of India's highly anticipated three-match ODI series against England, starting July 14 at Edgbaston, which marks a crucial transition phase for the national team's 50-over setup.

We should think about what is best for Indian cricket," Manjrekar pointed out.

He further added a sharp analogy regarding the nature of opening the batting in modern one-dayers:

"Opening in 50 overs is fun. It is like a rehabilitation programme. That, I think, you should give to a player who is in his prime and has got another 5 to 10 years. If you are thinking only about Rohit Sharma, it's not right... In that space, I don't think Rohit Sharma would be my choice in the squad."

Manjrekar's comments carry heavy context, arriving right after young sensation Yashasvi Jaiswal was left out of the ODI squad traveling to England, despite Jaiswal slamming two centuries in his last three ODI appearances.
