Chhattisgarh is likely to see an increase in rainfall activity over the next 48 hours, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall in parts of the state. North and central Chhattisgarh are expected to receive the most intense showers, with isolated areas potentially recording extremely heavy rainfall.

The weather system is also expected to bring some relief from the prevailing temperatures. The maximum temperature may fall by 2 to 4 degrees Celsius over the next two days.

Depression to Intensify Rainfall

According to the weather department, a low-pressure area that had formed over coastal West Bengal and adjoining Bangladesh has strengthened into a depression.

The system is moving west-northwestwards and is expected to move towards Gangetic West Bengal and Jharkhand during the next 24 hours. Its movement is likely to increase rainfall activity across Chhattisgarh.

The state is expected to remain under the influence of the active monsoon system for the next three days, after which rainfall activity may gradually ease.

Rain, Thunderstorms in Raipur

The state capital Raipur is likely to remain cloudy on August 14, with intermittent rain and thundershowers expected at some places.

The maximum temperature in the city is likely to remain around 28°C, while the minimum temperature may settle near 25°C.

During the previous 24 hours, Durg recorded the highest maximum temperature at 32.8°C, while Pendra Road recorded the lowest minimum temperature at 23.6°C.

What Is a Wind Shear Zone?

A wind shear zone refers to an area of the atmosphere where wind speed or direction changes significantly with altitude.

Such variations can make the atmosphere unstable and support the development of clouds and thunderstorms. When combined with an active monsoon system, a shear zone can contribute to increased rainfall activity across affected areas.

Chhattisgarh Rainfall Near Normal

Despite variations between districts, the overall rainfall situation in Chhattisgarh remains within the normal category.

Between June 1 and August 13, the state received 668.8 mm of rainfall, against the normal average of 734.4 mm for the period.

This represents a rainfall deficit of 65.6 mm, or around 9 per cent. However, the state's overall seasonal rainfall continues to remain within the normal range according to the available weather data.

Narayanpur Records Highest Rainfall

Among the districts, Narayanpur has recorded the highest rainfall so far this monsoon season, receiving 1,043.9 mm against its normal rainfall of 780.7 mm.

This is around 34 per cent above normal.

Other districts that have received substantial rainfall include Sarangarh-Bilaigarh with 948.2 mm, Bijapur with 870.6 mm, Janjgir with 857.3 mm and Mahasamund with 835.6 mm.

Sarangarh-Bilaigarh Gets 59% More Rain

Sarangarh-Bilaigarh has recorded the highest increase over its normal rainfall figure. The district has received 948.2 mm, compared with its normal rainfall of 598.2 mm, making the rainfall 59 per cent above normal.

Narayanpur has recorded 34 per cent excess rainfall, followed by Mungeli at 32 per cent, Balodabazar at 28 per cent, Mahasamund at 26 per cent and Janjgir at 24 per cent.

Surguja Faces 51% Rainfall Deficit

Several districts, however, continue to face significant rainfall shortages. Surguja has recorded the highest deficit at 51 per cent.

The district received 379.6 mm of rainfall against the normal figure of 773.2 mm. Jashpur has recorded a 45 per cent deficit, followed by Bemetara at 40 per cent and Kanker at 35 per cent.

Surajpur has a 22 per cent deficit, while Bastar and Kabirdham have recorded deficits of 21 per cent each.

Raipur Receives 13% Excess Rainfall

Raipur has received above-normal rainfall during the current monsoon season. As of August 13, the city had recorded 727.8 mm of rainfall, compared with the normal figure of 641.9 mm.

This means Raipur has received 85.9 mm, or 13 per cent, more rainfall than normal.

Of the state's 33 districts, 20 are currently in the normal rainfall category, while six have received above-normal rainfall and seven remain below normal.

With heavy rainfall expected over the next 48 hours, residents in northern and central parts of Chhattisgarh should remain alert to local weather warnings, particularly in areas vulnerable to waterlogging and flash flooding.

Madhya Pradesh is facing a significant monsoon shortfall this season, with the state recording an overall rainfall deficit of nearly 18 per cent, raising concerns over drought-like conditions and the impact on agriculture. The IMD has predicted that an active weather system, supported by a fresh western disturbance, is likely to trigger heavy rainfall across northern Madhya Pradesh over the next three days.

The state has received less than half of its total seasonal rainfall target so far.

Rudraprayag: Continuous heavy rainfall has intensified the flood situation in Uttarakhand's Rudraprayag district, with the Alaknanda River flowing above the danger mark and the Mandakini River also witnessing a sharp rise in water levels. The persistent downpour has inundated several low-lying areas, prompting the district administration to remain on high alert and closely monitor the evolving situation.

According to officials, rainfall has continued across the district since early morning, leading to a rapid increase in river discharge. Bodies Recovered After Search Operations

Search teams recovered the body of a 10-year-old boy who had been swept away in the Dheki River in Surajpur district. The child had gone missing two days earlier, and the body was located nearly 20–25 kilometres downstream after an extensive search operation by DDRF and police teams.

In another incident, rescue personnel recovered the bodies of a deputy sarpanch and his wife who were swept away while attempting to cross a flooded stream in Sarangarh-Bilaigarh district on July 26. Their submerged vehicle was located after an intensive search operation.

Rainfall Pattern Remains Uneven

According to official rainfall data, Chhattisgarh has received 477.8 mm of rainfall between June 1 and July 29, against the seasonal normal of 544.6 mm, leaving the state with an overall rainfall deficit of around 12 per cent. Orange Alert for Five Districts

The IMD has issued an Orange Alert for extremely heavy rainfall in:

A heavy rainfall warning has also been issued for 12 districts:

Officials have advised residents living near rivers, streams, and low-lying areas to remain alert as continuous rainfall may lead to localized flooding.

Labourer Dies in Betul Wall Collapse

Heavy rainfall triggered a tragic incident in Betul's Ganj police station area, where a railway boundary wall collapsed onto a nearby hut late Wednesday night.

The collapse killed 27-year-old labourer Rahul Uikey, who was asleep inside the structure. Another labourer, Shani Singh, sustained injuries and is undergoing treatment.

Betul received significant rainfall over the past 24 hours, with 93.4 mm recorded in the district headquarters and 107 mm in Bhainsdehi. Authorities also opened seven gates of the Satpura Dam following the rise in water levels.

Rain Deficit May Reduce

Meteorologists believe the ongoing rainfall could help reduce Madhya Pradesh's seasonal rainfall deficit.

So far, the state has received 359.3 mm (14.1 inches) of rainfall against the normal 428.9 mm (16.9 inches) for this period, leaving an overall deficit of 16 percent.

Rainfall remains 15 percent below normal in eastern Madhya Pradesh and 17 percent below normal in western Madhya Pradesh, although continuous showers over the coming days could narrow the gap.

Most Districts Still Below Normal Rainfall

According to IMD data, 47 districts continue to record below-normal rainfall, including Rewa, Sagar, Satna, Ujjain, Dhar, Betul, Narmadapuram, Raisen, Khandwa, Khargone, Shivpuri, Gwalior, Ratlam, Seoni, Chhindwara and Vidisha.

However, Bhopal, Indore, Burhanpur, Dewas, Sehore, Rajgarh, Bhind and Mandsaur have already received above-normal rainfall this season, with Dewas recording 29 percent excess rainfall.

July Crucial for Monsoon Performance

Weather experts note that nearly one-third of Madhya Pradesh's annual monsoon rainfall is typically recorded during July. Although rainfall activity picked up during the first half of the month, weaker spells over the past week pushed the seasonal rainfall back below normal.

Major cities have recorded notable historical rainfall records during July. Bhopal once received nearly 41 inches of rain in July 1986, while Jabalpur holds the state's highest July rainfall record of approximately 45 inches in 1930.

Authorities Advise Caution

With intense rainfall expected to continue through the weekend, district administrations have advised residents to avoid crossing flooded roads, remain away from overflowing rivers and nullahs, and follow official weather advisories.

Emergency agencies remain on alert as heavy rain is likely to affect transportation, increase the risk of waterlogging, and cause localized disruptions in vulnerable areas.

Continuous heavy rainfall has disrupted normal life across Chhattisgarh, with rivers and streams overflowing, flood-like conditions reported in several districts, and weather-related incidents claiming multiple lives. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rain, thunderstorms and lightning across many parts of the state over the next 48 hours.

Among the major incidents, a 55-year-old man drowned while attempting to cross a swollen stream in Gariaband district, while five people were killed in separate lightning strikes across the state.

Man Swept Away While Crossing Stream

The victim, identified as Thanwar Yadav (55) of Sahaspur village, was swept away while crossing the overflowing Sargi stream in Gariaband district. According to local residents, he was reportedly under the influence of alcohol when he entered the flooded stream.

His body was recovered nearly five kilometres away near Khuteri village after an extensive search.

Sikaser Dam Water Released

Authorities have released 15,000 cusecs of water from the Sikaser Dam, prompting an alert for villages situated along the Pairi River.

District administrations have advised residents living near riverbanks and low-lying areas to remain vigilant and avoid venturing into flooded streams or waterlogged roads.

Lightning Claims Five Lives

Heavy rain has also been accompanied by widespread lightning strikes.

According to officials:

• Three villagers lost their lives in Manendragarh-Chirmiri-Bharatpur district.

• A farmer was killed by lightning in Surajpur.

• A woman labourer died in Gaurela-Pendra-Marwahi.

At least 11 other people sustained injuries in separate lightning-related incidents and are undergoing treatment.

Search Continues for Missing Couple

Rescue teams are continuing their search for former sarpanch Devnarayan Patel and his wife, whose car was swept away in the overflowing Lat Nala in Sarangarh-Barmkela two days ago.

Despite continuous rescue operations, the couple remains missing.

Flood-Like Situation in Gariaband

Several areas of Gariaband district are witnessing flood-like conditions following incessant rainfall.

Water has been flowing above the Kholapara stream on the Chhindola-Amamora road, cutting off road connectivity between the district headquarters and villages including Amamora, Odh, Kukrar and Nagarar.

In another incident, a motorcyclist attempting to cross the flooded stream lost control of his vehicle but was rescued by local residents before being swept away.

Rain Likely to Continue

The Meteorological Department has predicted that most parts of Chhattisgarh will continue to receive light to moderate rainfall, while isolated areas may witness heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning over the next two days.

In Raipur, the forecast indicates cloudy skies with intermittent heavy showers. The maximum temperature is expected to remain around 27°C, while the minimum may hover near 23°C.

The highest maximum temperature in the state on Tuesday was 30.8°C in Durg, while Pendra Road recorded the lowest minimum temperature at 21.6°C.

Deep Depression Driving Heavy Rain

Meteorologists said the ongoing spell is being driven by a deep depression over Odisha and adjoining regions, which is moving towards northern Odisha, southern Jharkhand and northern Chhattisgarh. An active monsoon trough is also supplying abundant moisture, resulting in widespread rainfall across the state.

Authorities have urged people to avoid crossing flooded rivers, streams and causeways, remain indoors during thunderstorms, and follow local weather advisories until conditions improve.

Heavy monsoon rainfall continued to lash large parts of India on Wednesday, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue red and orange alerts across several states. Flooding, landslides, transport disruptions and industrial shutdowns have been reported as multiple weather systems intensified rainfall across the country.

The IMD said a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal is moving across Odisha, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh, while the monsoon trough remains active. The weather office has forecast above-normal rainfall over Northwest and Central India for the next four to five days and heavy rainfall across Eastern India for up to six days, increasing the risk of flooding and landslides.

Red Alert for Central India

The IMD has issued a red alert for parts of Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, warning of extremely heavy rainfall in several districts. In Madhya Pradesh, districts including Balaghat, Seoni, Chhindwara, Narmadapuram and Raisen are likely to receive intense rainfall over the next 24 hours.

Heavy rain warnings have also been issued for Dewas, Sehore, Harda, Betul, Pandhurna, Sagar, Narsinghpur, Damoh, Jabalpur and Chhatarpur, while moderate to heavy showers are expected in more than 40 districts, including Bhopal, Indore, Ujjain, Gwalior, Rewa and Shahdol.

The Meteorological Department has said the current spell of heavy rain is likely to continue in the state until August 1.

Gujarat Flooding Hits Tata Motors Plant

Continuous rainfall and flooding in Gujarat have disrupted operations at Tata Motors' Sanand manufacturing plant and several nearby supplier units.

The company said production of the Tiago, Tigor, Nexon and Sierra models has been temporarily affected after floodwaters entered the industrial area. Restoration work is underway, and operations are expected to resume once conditions improve. The temporary disruption may impact vehicle deliveries.

Maruti Suzuki, however, said its manufacturing facility at Hansalpur-Becharaji has not been affected.

Char Dham Yatra Suspended

In Uttarakhand, landslides triggered by heavy rainfall have blocked several pilgrimage routes. As a precaution, authorities have suspended the Char Dham Yatra for two days.

Heavy rain alerts have been issued for eight districts, with forecasts of thunderstorms, lightning and intense rainfall. Schools and Anganwadi centres in Champawat, Bageshwar and Tehri have also been closed.

The IMD has warned that adverse weather conditions are expected to persist across the hill state until August 5.

Rain Causes Urban Flooding

Heavy rainfall also affected several cities across northern India.

In Delhi, waterlogging in several markets and major roads led to long traffic jams and disrupted daily commuting.

In Punjab and Chandigarh, orange and yellow alerts remain in force after overnight rain brought temperatures down by nearly 3 degrees Celsius.

Flood Situation in Assam

Flood conditions remain critical in Assam, where the death toll has risen to 75.

According to state authorities, over 3.32 lakh people across seven districts continue to be affected, while more than 45,000 hectares of agricultural land remain submerged.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced financial assistance for affected families, including compensation for those who lost relatives in the floods and support for displaced students.

Rain Alerts Across States

The IMD has also issued rainfall alerts for several other states:

• Orange Alert: Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Gujarat, East Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Central Maharashtra and Karnataka.

• Yellow Alert: Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Konkan-Goa, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura.

In Rajasthan, rain alerts have been issued for 22 districts, while Bihar remains under a yellow alert for thunderstorms and lightning in 13 districts. Parts of Meerut (Uttar Pradesh), Khagaria (Bihar) and Gariaband (Chhattisgarh) also reported waterlogging and local flooding.

Authorities have advised residents in flood-prone and landslide-prone areas to remain alert, avoid unnecessary travel and follow local administration advisories until weather conditions improve.

At least five people drowned and two others were swept away in separate incidents as heavy rain swelled rivers and streams across Chhattisgarh. Rescue teams launched searches while local administrations urged residents to stay away from flooded crossings and water bodies.

Rain Raises Water Levels

Continuous rainfall has increased river flow and made familiar bathing spots, causeways and village crossings dangerous. Fast currents can develop without warning, particularly downstream from catchment areas receiving intense rain.

Search Operations Continue

Police, disaster-response teams and local volunteers have joined rescue efforts in affected districts. Poor visibility, strong currents and rising water levels can delay searches, especially in remote stretches without easy road access.

Preventable Monsoon Tragedies

Many drowning incidents occur when people attempt to cross overflowing roads, enter rivers for bathing or fishing, or underestimate current speed. Even shallow-looking water can sweep away people and vehicles when the flow is strong.

Administration Issues Appeal

Authorities have asked families to prevent children from approaching rivers and ponds during heavy rain. Barricades, warning boards and temporary closure of unsafe crossings will remain essential until water levels fall.
