Australia Reach Record Eighth Women’s T20 World Cup Final After Dominant Win Over West Indies

London: Australia moved one step closer to another global title after defeating West Indies by eight wickets in the semi-final of the Women’s T20 World Cup at The Oval, securing a record eighth appearance in the tournament final.

The six-time champions produced a clinical all-round display on Tuesday, restricting West Indies to 125/7 before chasing down the target in just 13 overs with eight wickets in hand.

The victory underlined Australia’s continued dominance in women’s cricket and extended their remarkable record in ICC events. They will now face the winner of the second semi-final between hosts England and South Africa, scheduled to be played at the same venue on July 2. The final will take place at Lord’s on July 5.

After winning the toss, Australia opted to bowl first and quickly gained control despite West Indies managing to get through the powerplay without losing a wicket. Openers Hayley Matthews and Qiana Joseph struggled to accelerate, with the Caribbean side reaching only 35 runs in the first six overs.

The breakthrough came in the ninth over when Georgia Wareham dismissed Matthews for 30 off 28 deliveries. The wicket triggered a collapse as West Indies failed to build partnerships in the middle overs.

By the 16th over, the score had slipped to 83/6, leaving the batting side under pressure. Deandra Dottin provided some late resistance with a brisk 26 off 16 balls, helping West Indies cross the 120-run mark and post a total of 125/7 from their 20 overs.

Australia’s bowling attack shared the workload effectively. Captain Sophie Molineux, Ashleigh Gardner and Wareham picked up two wickets each, while Annabel Sutherland chipped in with one wicket.

The target never appeared challenging once Australia’s chase got underway.

Georgia Voll and Beth Mooney attacked from the outset, putting pressure on the West Indies bowlers. Voll struck 16 runs from 11 deliveries before being bowled by Chinelle Henry in the third over. Phoebe Litchfield followed soon after, trapped lbw by Matthews for four.

Even with two wickets down, Australia remained firmly in control thanks to Mooney’s aggressive approach.

The innings briefly encountered uncertainty when experienced batter Ellyse Perry was forced to retire hurt after scoring two runs. Perry appeared uncomfortable after the seventh over and left the field following a short stay at the crease. Her condition will be closely monitored ahead of the final.

Gardner then joined Mooney and ensured there would be no comeback for West Indies.

The pair added an unbeaten 63-run partnership for the third wicket, finishing the chase with remarkable ease. Mooney remained unbeaten on 61 from 36 balls and was the standout performer with the bat. Gardner contributed an unbeaten 35 from 20 deliveries, capping off an impressive all-round outing after also claiming two wickets earlier in the match.

West Indies managed only two wickets during the chase, with Matthews and Henry taking one each.

Australia’s ability to dominate both with the ball and bat has been a recurring theme throughout the tournament, and the semi-final was no exception. The defending powerhouse barely allowed West Indies an opportunity to build momentum at any stage of the contest.

With another final now secured, Australia will enter the title clash as strong favourites regardless of whether England or South Africa emerge from the second semi-final. For West Indies, the defeat brings an end to their campaign, while Australia remain on course to add another chapter to their already glittering Women’s T20 World Cup history.
