Korea Triple Murder Case Handed Over to CBI; Sai Government Approves Central Probe Into BJP Leader's Brutal Killing

Chhattisgarh govt approves a CBI probe into the Korea triple murder where a BJP leader was burned alive over a sand mining dispute. 12 arrested so far.

In a significant legal development, the Vishnu Deo Sai-led Chhattisgarh government has officially approved a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the brutal triple murder case in Korea district. The decision comes in response to sustained demands from the grieving family and rising political pressure following the horrific killing of a local BJP leader and two of his family members over an illegal sand smuggling dispute.

The incident, which took place on the night of June 16 in Naugai village, saw attackers drench a Toyota Fortuner in petrol and set it ablaze with the victims inside. To date, police have arrested 12 individuals in connection with the case.

Extortion and Illegal Sand Mining at the Root of the Feud

The gruesome murders are the culmination of a months-long turf war over illegal sand mining and extortion tracking back to the Chirmi sand ghat contract awarded eight months ago.

├── Mining Base : Chirmi sand ghat contract & illegal extractions from Sonhat/Kailashpur
├── Extortion Rate : ₹1,000 illicit levy collected per sand-laden heavy truck (Highwa)
└── Market Value : Single truck of sand retails for up to ₹5,000 in Baikunthpur

The friction escalated between the families of prominent local BJP leaders—Bharat Singh alias Lalla Singh and Manoj Tripathi. The Tripathi family, which operates multiple commercial tipper trucks, refused to pay the illegal ₹1,000 transit levy imposed by the Singh camp on sand hauled from alternative riverbeds, creating deep-seated animosity.

Political Clout, Hooter Disputes, and the Trigger Event

The political ties of both factions locked local law enforcement in a delicate position:

The Victims' Camp: Bharat Singh alias Lalla Singh was known as a powerful regional figure closely aligned with Baikunthpur MLA Bhaiya Lal Rajwade.

The Accused Camp: Main accused Manoj Tripathi is considered a close associate of BJP MLA and former Union Minister of State Renuka Singh.

Prior to the incident, the Tripathi camp had lodged a formal complaint against Lalla Singh for illegally using high-decibel police hooters on his private Fortuner. Under alleged political pressure, the Sonhat Police confiscated the hooters, intensifying the rivalry.

The immediate trigger occurred earlier on Tuesday, June 16, when members of the Singh family allegedly assaulted Nishant Tripathi near the Shivghat area in Naugai. Looking to resolve the subsequent police FIR, Lalla Singh and four relatives drove down to Manoj Tripathi's residence that same evening for a compromise meeting, where they were ambushed in a pre-planned trap.

Two other occupants survived the horrific attack with severe burn injuries and were immediately rushed to Raipur for advanced trauma care.

TS Singh Deo Demands End to Sand Contracting System

The political fallout of the triple homicide has triggered sharp criticism from the opposition. Former Deputy Chief Minister TS Singh Deo hit out at the administrative apparatus, stating that local intelligence was fully aware of the brewing gang war but chose to remain passive.

"The sand mafia has grown completely out of control across Chhattisgarh. We recently saw a government employee murdered on the Chhattisgarh-Jharkhand border, and now this. If the administration cannot regulate the law and order surrounding these natural resources, the government must immediately abolish the commercial sand contracting system altogether," Singh Deo asserted.

Former Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel also traveled to Korea district to review the situation and console the victim's family, who are currently demanding an immediate capital penalty or encounter-style justice for the perpetrators.

The local court has remanded four primary accused—Akshat Tripathi, Satyaprakash Tripathi, Mannu Tripathi, and Vishal Tripathi—to judicial custody, while the remaining eight arrested co-conspirators are undergoing separate custodial interrogation as the CBI prepares to take over the case files.
