The southwest monsoon has covered most of India, bringing much-needed relief from the summer heat. However, the season also brings a significant rise in seasonal infections, digestive issues, and respiratory illnesses. As humidity levels soar and temperatures fluctuate, the body’s immune system faces constant challenges, making it vulnerable to common monsoon ailments.

Health experts are now emphasizing the importance of simple, natural immunity boosters found right in our kitchens. According to data from the ICMR, India sees a 35 to 45 percent rise in upper respiratory and gastrointestinal infections during the June-September monsoon period. This year, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting below-normal rainfall for August, experts suggest a proactive approach to strengthening natural defenses.

The Power of Kitchen Staples
The most effective immunity boosters are often the ingredients already sitting in your pantry. Turmeric, a staple in every Indian household, contains curcumin, a powerful compound with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. A glass of warm turmeric milk every night can help fight inflammation and reduce infection risk. To maximize absorption, it is vital to add a pinch of black pepper.

Amla and Tulsi for Daily Defense
Amla, or Indian gooseberry, is a powerhouse of Vitamin C, offering 20 times more than an orange. Eating fresh amla or drinking its juice daily can significantly strengthen immunity and protect against seasonal infections. Similarly, Tulsi (holy basil), one of Ayurveda’s most celebrated herbs, is rich in antioxidants and helps the body cope with seasonal coughs and colds.

Traditional Kadha and Ginger
The traditional kadha, made by boiling ginger, tulsi, black pepper, cloves, and cinnamon, is a powerful natural shield. One cup daily is one of the strongest natural defenses against monsoon illness. Ginger, in particular, supports healthy digestion and provides a warming effect during damp weather.

A Holistic Approach to Wellness
While these natural remedies are effective, experts stress they are part of a holistic lifestyle. A balanced diet, safe drinking water, adequate sleep, and regular physical activity remain the foundation of good health. The 'Ritu Suraksha-2026' program, launched under the AYUSH department, highlights the importance of seasonal wellness routines. By incorporating these simple health hacks, Indians can navigate the rainy season with stronger immunity and overall well-being.

With the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting below-normal rainfall for July and a 40 per cent rainfall deficit in June, health experts are now urging citizens to adopt natural immunity boosters to combat the unusual weather patterns.

Kitchen Remedies That Work

Health professionals emphasise that the most effective immunity boosters are often found right in Indian kitchens. Turmeric, a staple in every household, contains curcumin — a powerful compound with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Pairing turmeric with black pepper enhances curcumin absorption significantly.

Consultant Dietitian Kanika Malhotra explains that starting the day with amla strengthens immunity and helps prevent diseases. Packed with vitamin C and antioxidants, amla protects the body against oxidative stress during the monsoon season.

Traditional Remedies Making a Comeback

A glass of warm turmeric milk every night fights inflammation, reduces infection risk and keeps the immune system strong through the wet monsoon season. Meanwhile, a traditional kadha made from ginger, tulsi, black pepper, cloves and cinnamon — boiled together and consumed daily — serves as one of the strongest natural defences against monsoon illness.

Raw garlic, containing allicin that fights bacteria and viruses, is another simple yet powerful remedy. Adding it to dal or eating a small raw clove daily is one of the easiest ways to keep monsoon infections away.

Ginger and Tulsi for Daily Defence

Ginger supports healthy digestion, helps relieve bloating and provides a warming effect during damp weather.
Holistic Approach to Wellness

Health professionals advise eating loads of seasonal fruits and vegetables rich in vitamin C to prevent infections. Probiotics present in curd and fermented foods build immune response. Indian herbs like turmeric, coriander, fenugreek, ginger, curry leaves and garlic all help boost immunity.

Government Initiatives

The 'Ritu Suraksha-2026' programme, launched under the AYUSH department in Kerala, aims to prevent illnesses during the monsoon through traditional treatments including panchakarma therapies, along with counselling on diet and lifestyle changes.

What Experts Recommend

Health authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, with the Ministry of Ayush promoting traditional wellness practices alongside modern healthcare interventions. A balanced diet, safe drinking water, adequate sleep, regular physical activity and good personal hygiene remain the foundation of good health during the monsoon.

As the 2026 monsoon season drenches India, health experts are raising concerns about the sharp decline in immunity that typically accompanies the rainy months. According to medical professionals, the combination of humidity, fluctuating temperatures, and increased pathogen activity makes the body more susceptible to infections. The good news? Traditional Indian kitchens hold the answer to building natural defences against these seasonal threats.

Turmeric: The Golden Spice That Fights Inflammation

Health experts are strongly recommending the inclusion of turmeric in daily diets. A glass of warm turmeric milk every night can fight inflammation and reduce infection risk. Turmeric naturally helps break down thick chest mucus, making it easier to breathe during wet, cloudy monsoon days. Nutritionists suggest adding turmeric to soups, vegetables, or consuming it with black pepper for better absorption.

Amla and Jamun: Vitamin C Powerhouses for Rainy Days

The monsoon brings with it seasonal fruits that are nature's immunity boosters. Amla, or Indian gooseberry, is being hailed as a vitamin C powerhouse. Eating fresh amla or drinking amla juice daily significantly strengthens immunity and protects against seasonal infections. Similarly, jamun (Indian blackberry), a monsoon favourite across India, is packed with vitamin C and iron. These nutrients help support immunity and maintain healthy haemoglobin levels while protecting the body against seasonal infections.

Traditional Kadha: The Ayurvedic Immunity Drink

Ayurvedic practitioners are reviving the ancient practice of consuming kadha during the monsoon. The Tulsi Ginger Kadha and Turmeric Black Pepper Kadha combine natural herbs and spices into soothing herbal drinks that support seasonal wellness. These traditional preparations are known to fight cough, cold, and other common monsoon ailments. Start your morning with warm tulsi ginger tea, and add turmeric to your meals for maximum benefits.

Foods to Avoid: Ayurveda's Monsoon Dietary Guidelines

Ayurveda suggests reducing the consumption of certain foods during the monsoon. Too much curd, especially at night, cold drinks, iced foods, and deep-fried items like pakoras are best avoided. Instead, focus on light, freshly cooked meals. Use Indian herbs like turmeric, coriander, fenugreek, mustard, asafoetida, ginger, curry leaves, and garlic, as all these help in boosting immunity.

What Next: Making Immunity a Daily Habit

Health experts advise that immunity building should not be a seasonal activity but a year-round practice. However, the monsoon demands extra attention. Simple daily habits like drinking boiled water, eating seasonal fruits, and incorporating turmeric and ginger into meals can go a long way. As India navigates through the 2026 monsoon season, these natural health hacks offer a safe, effective, and affordable way to stay healthy.

Feeling Weak This Monsoon? 7 Immunity-Boosting Drinks to Stay Healthy During the Rainy Season

Frequent colds, fatigue and low energy during the monsoon may be signs of weakened immunity. Health experts recommend seven simple, kitchen-based immunity-boosting drinks along with healthy lifestyle habits to help fight seasonal infections naturally.

The monsoon season brings welcome relief from the summer heat, but it also creates ideal conditions for bacteria, viruses and fungi to multiply. As a result, many people experience fatigue, frequent colds, digestive issues and recurring infections during this time.

According to dietitian Dr. Nidhi Shukla Pandey, maintaining strong immunity is one of the most effective ways to stay healthy during the rainy season. She recommends incorporating natural herbs and spices commonly found in Indian kitchens into daily beverages and meals to strengthen the body's natural defense system.

Why Does Immunity Weaken During Monsoon?

Changing weather conditions can affect digestion and reduce the body's ability to fight infections. Weak immunity may lead to:

Frequent cold and cough

Fever

Stomach infections

Skin problems

Constant tiredness and fatigue

Contaminated food, unsafe drinking water and increased exposure to germs during the monsoon further raise the risk of illness.

7 Monsoon-Friendly Immunity-Boosting Drinks

Health experts recommend consuming one warm drink daily, preferably in the morning or evening, in moderate quantities.

Tulsi (Holy Basil) Tea

Ginger Tea

Turmeric Milk

Giloy Herbal Drink

Mint and Lemon Water

Cinnamon Tea

Ajwain (Carom Seed) Water

These beverages contain natural compounds that may support immunity, improve digestion and help the body cope with seasonal infections.

Include Herbs in Daily Meals

Apart from herbal drinks, adding ingredients such as tulsi, curry leaves, mint, coriander and ajwain to everyday meals can provide additional health benefits without making major dietary changes.

Healthy Habits Matter Too

Experts emphasize that herbs alone cannot build strong immunity. A balanced diet, adequate sleep, regular physical activity, proper hydration and good hygiene are equally important for maintaining overall health during the monsoon.

Use Herbs with Caution

Some herbs may not be suitable for everyone. Pregnant women, people taking blood-thinning medicines, those with autoimmune disorders, gallstones, kidney stones, liver disease or severe acidity should consult a healthcare professional before consuming certain herbs regularly.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle alongside a nutrient-rich diet remains the most effective strategy to stay protected against seasonal illnesses.

The southwest monsoon has covered most parts of India, bringing much-needed relief from the summer heat. However, health experts are now warning that the season also brings a spike in seasonal infections, digestive issues and respiratory illnesses across the country.

According to health officials, the monsoon season often leads to a temporary dip in immunity. High humidity, fluctuating temperatures and increased exposure to contaminated food and water create favourable conditions for infections to spread. The India Meteorological Department has forecast below-normal rainfall for July, making it even more critical for individuals to take proactive steps.

The Science Behind Seasonal Vulnerability

Ayurveda has long recognised that the monsoon season weakens Agni, or digestive fire. When digestion slows down, food may not be processed efficiently, leading to the accumulation of Ama, or incompletely digested metabolic waste. Ayurveda considers this build-up one of the important reasons behind reduced immunity and greater susceptibility to infections.

Health experts emphasise that if your digestive system is functioning well, your body is generally better equipped to absorb nutrients and maintain healthy immune responses. This makes food choices during the rainy season particularly important.

Turmeric: The Golden Shield

Turmeric, a staple in every Indian kitchen, contains curcumin, a powerful compound with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Regularly incorporating turmeric into meals helps support normal immune function. Health experts recommend pairing turmeric with black pepper to enhance curcumin absorption significantly. Turmeric also helps break down thick chest mucus, making breathing easier during damp monsoon days.

Amla: The Vitamin C Powerhouse

Amla, or Indian gooseberry, is one of the richest natural sources of vitamin C available. During monsoon, when immune demands are high, this matters greatly.
Monsoon Child Health: 5 Natural Tips to Keep Kids Safe This Rainy Season

With the 2026 monsoon in full swing, parents across India are concerned about their children's health. Seasonal infections, digestive issues and skin problems are on the rise among kids, but simple natural health hacks can make a significant difference.

The monsoon brings increased risk of colds, coughs, viral infections and stomach problems for children. Health experts recommend a combination of traditional wisdom and practical hygiene measures to keep young ones safe.

Warm, Freshly Cooked Meals

A balanced monsoon diet for children plays a critical role in maintaining energy, immunity and cognitive function. Serve freshly prepared, warm food to reduce infection risks. Khichdi, warm dals and light soups are gentle on young stomachs and easier to digest during the rainy season.

Ayurveda tips for keeping kids healthy during monsoon include warm meals, steady sleep, hygiene and gentle indoor movement for a calm, comforting daily routine.

Vitamin C-Rich Foods

Include fruits like oranges, guavas and papayas, which are rich in vitamin C, to boost immunity. Amla, one of the best sources of vitamin C, can be given to children in various forms. Vitamin C-rich foods such as citrus fruits, amla and guava enhance iron absorption and support immune defence.

Frequent Handwashing

Hand hygiene remains one of the simplest and most effective ways to prevent infections. According to UNICEF India, washing hands with soap at critical times can reduce diarrhoeal diseases by nearly 47 per cent and respiratory infections by 23 per cent. Encourage children to wash hands before meals, after using the toilet and after coming home from school or play.

Avoid Street Food and Raw Vegetables

World Health Organisation guidelines recommend avoiding stale and street food during monsoon. Street food can carry harmful bacteria that lead to stomach infections. Try to avoid eating raw vegetables as they may contain bacteria and viruses. Instead, serve cooked vegetables that are easier to digest.

Probiotics for Gut Health

Probiotic-rich foods like curd (yoghurt) help maintain gut health in children. Monsoon humidity slows down digestion, and adding probiotics to the daily diet balances gut bacteria and improves digestion. Fresh, homemade curd or yoghurt can be included in meals.

Proper Clothing and Mosquito Protection

Go for fully covered clothes and use mosquito nets while sleeping. Proper clothing plays an important role in taking care of children's health in the rainy season. Use of repellents and creams on the skin of small babies is generally not advisable.

Consistent Sleep Schedule

Regular meal times, a consistent sleep schedule, everyday hygiene and dry clothes after rain play are essential for children's health during monsoon. A consistent sleep routine helps strengthen the immune system and keeps children energised.

What Parents Should Know

With a few consistent habits — good food, proper hydration, the right footwear and knowing when to simply let a child rest — families can get through July and August without major disruption. Health authorities continue to monitor the situation, and parents are encouraged to seek medical attention if symptoms persist.

As the 2026 monsoon continues, these natural health tips offer parents practical, affordable ways to protect their children from seasonal illnesses while building strong immunity for the future.

Monsoon Immunity Booster: 5 Natural Health Hacks for Rainy Season

Boost your monsoon immunity with natural health hacks from your kitchen. Experts recommend turmeric, amla, and ginger to prevent seasonal infections this rainy season.

Monsoon Brings Health Challenges; Experts Recommend Kitchen Remedies

As the southwest monsoon finally covers most parts of India, bringing relief from scorching summer heat, health experts are warning about the seasonal spike in infections, digestive issues, and respiratory illnesses. With the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting below-normal rainfall for July 2026 at less than 94 per cent of the long period average, the unusual weather pattern makes it critical for individuals to strengthen their natural defences.

Hospitals across major cities are already reporting a rise in respiratory viral infections. In Bengaluru, doctors are detecting an increase in influenza cases, particularly Influenza A H1N1 and H3N2 strains, alongside a slight rise in Covid-19 infections. "More than Covid-19, it is seasonal influenza that has increased. We are seeing around 10 to 15 influenza cases a day," said Dr Ankitha Teja Narayan, Internal Medicine, KIMS Hospitals. The reopening of schools is also contributing to the spread of viral infections.

Health experts emphasise that the most effective immunity boosters are often found in Indian kitchens. Dr Sujit Paul, Group Chief Executive Officer and Health Expert at Zota Health Care Ltd, told news agencies that turmeric, a staple in every household, contains curcumin, a powerful compound with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Regularly incorporating turmeric into meals may help support normal immune function. Pairing turmeric with black pepper enhances curcumin absorption significantly.

Amla, or Indian gooseberry, is another powerhouse ingredient. Packed with vitamin C and antioxidants, amla strengthens the immune system and protects the body against oxidative stress. One amla contains 20 times the vitamin C of an orange. Ginger, a kitchen staple, supports healthy digestion, helps relieve bloating, and provides a warming effect during damp weather. It may also support respiratory health by soothing throat irritation.

Tulsi, or holy basil, is one of Ayurveda's most celebrated herbs for supporting immunity and respiratory health. Rich in antioxidants, tulsi helps the body cope with seasonal coughs, colds, and allergy-related discomfort. Garlic, nature's antibacterial powerhouse, contains allicin that actively targets harmful bacteria and viruses. Regular consumption boosts the ability of white blood cells to fight diseases.

While these Ayurvedic ingredients have stood the test of time, experts stress they should be viewed as part of a holistic lifestyle. A balanced diet, safe drinking water, adequate sleep, regular physical activity, and good personal hygiene remain the foundation of good health during the monsoon. The 'Ritu Suraksha-2026' programme, launched under the AYUSH department at Mar Sleeva Medicity in Pala, Kerala, aims to prevent illnesses and ensure health protection during the monsoon.

As the 2026 monsoon continues to unfold, incorporating these natural health hacks into daily life could make a significant difference in staying healthy and infection-free throughout the rainy season.
