India will celebrate its 80th Independence Day on August 15, 2026, marking eight decades since the country became independent from British rule in 1947. Across the country, the Tricolour will be unfurled at government institutions, schools, colleges, offices and public places as citizens come together to remember the freedom struggle and reflect on the journey India has undertaken since independence.

Independence Day is observed every year on August 15 to commemorate India's freedom in 1947. But the occasion is more than a ceremonial flag-hoisting programme. It is a day to remember the sacrifices of freedom fighters, honour those who continue to serve the country and look at the responsibilities that come with being an independent nation.

India Celebrates 80 Years

The 2026 celebrations are particularly significant as India completes 80 years of independence.

The journey from 1947 to 2026 has seen the country transform across several areas, including agriculture, industry, science, technology, education, infrastructure and defence. India has also emerged as one of the world's major economies and has expanded its presence in global affairs.

The 80th Independence Day therefore provides an opportunity to look back at the achievements of the past eight decades while considering the challenges that remain ahead.

Red Fort Remains the Centre

The historic Red Fort in New Delhi will once again remain at the heart of the national Independence Day celebrations.

The Prime Minister traditionally hoists the national flag from the Red Fort and addresses the nation. The ceremony is followed by a ceremonial salute and cultural and other programmes reflecting India's diversity and national identity.

The President also addresses the nation on the eve of Independence Day. The President's Secretariat confirmed that the President is scheduled to address the country on August 14 ahead of the 80th Independence Day. (Press Information Bureau)

Remembering the Freedom Struggle

Independence Day carries a deep historical significance because India's freedom came after decades of political movements, protests, mass mobilisation and sacrifices.

Leaders and ordinary citizens from different regions, communities and backgrounds participated in the freedom movement. The struggle included major movements such as the Non-Cooperation Movement, Civil Disobedience Movement and Quit India Movement.

The contribution of revolutionaries, soldiers, social reformers, workers, farmers, students and women also forms an important part of India's independence story.

Every year, Independence Day provides an opportunity for the country to remember these contributions and pass their significance on to younger generations.

Tricolour Connects the Nation

The national flag remains the most visible symbol of Independence Day.

The government has encouraged citizens to participate in the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign and display the Tricolour with pride. (Press Information Bureau)

From homes and schools to public institutions and major landmarks, the Tricolour becomes part of the country's visual landscape around August 15.

The campaign has also encouraged people to connect the national flag with everyday expressions of patriotism rather than limiting its presence to official ceremonies.

Honouring Those Who Serve

Independence Day is also an occasion to recognise people who serve the country in different capacities.

The government has announced Independence Day 2026 honours for personnel from the police, fire services, Home Guard, Civil Defence and correctional services. According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, 1,057 personnel have been awarded gallantry and service medals on the occasion. (Press Information Bureau)

Such honours recognise individuals whose service often takes place away from public attention, including during emergencies, disasters and situations involving threats to public safety.

From Freedom to Responsibility

The meaning of independence has evolved over the decades.

For the generation that fought colonial rule, independence meant freedom from foreign control. For today's generation, it also means building a country where citizens have access to education, healthcare, employment opportunities, technology and basic services.

India's next phase will involve balancing economic growth with social development, environmental sustainability, technological progress and national security.

The idea of a developed India by 2047 has increasingly become part of the country's broader national conversation. The remaining years before the centenary of independence are therefore being viewed as an important period for achieving long-term national goals.

The Road Ahead

As India celebrates 80 years of independence, the occasion offers both a moment of pride and an opportunity for reflection.

The country's transformation since 1947 has been significant, but the journey is not complete. Employment, education, healthcare, rural development, urban infrastructure, inequality and environmental challenges remain important areas requiring sustained attention.

Independence Day ultimately connects India's past with its future. The sacrifices that made freedom possible remain part of the country's collective memory, while the choices made by today's generation will shape what India looks like when it reaches 100 years of independence in 2047.

On August 15, 2026, the Tricolour will once again rise across the country. Behind that familiar sight lies an 80-year journey—and the larger question of what India wants the next 20 years to look like.

A khadi organisation in Gwalior that began in 1930 under the influence of Mahatma Gandhi’s spinning-wheel movement and the Swadeshi campaign has come a long way from making khadi products to producing India’s national flag.

The Madhya Bharat Khadi Sangh now supplies Tricolours to government institutions and customers across nearly 18 states. Flags made at its Gwalior facility have also been used at prominent government buildings, including the Red Fort.

The organisation received official approval in 2016 to manufacture the national flag according to prescribed standards, marking a major turning point in its long history.

From Khadi to National Flag

The Madhya Bharat Khadi Sangh was established in 1930, inspired by Gandhi’s emphasis on khadi, self-reliance and Swadeshi.

The organisation initially focused on promoting indigenous products and producing khadi cloth and flags. Over the years, its work expanded, eventually leading to efforts to manufacture the national flag in accordance with official specifications.

According to organisation president Vasudev Sharma, several attempts had previously been made to secure permission for producing standardised national flags. Approval finally came in 2016.

First Standardised Flag Reached Red Fort

Following the approval, the first Tricolour manufactured by the organisation according to the prescribed standards was supplied for use at the Red Fort.

Flags produced at the Gwalior facility have also been used at important government establishments, including secretariat buildings and high courts.

For the organisation, the production of the national flag represents an extension of its original commitment to khadi and indigenous manufacturing.

Business Crosses ₹1 Crore

The growing demand for the Tricolour around Independence Day and Republic Day has also increased the organisation's business.

In its earlier years, the annual business associated with the national flag was around ₹15 lakh to ₹20 lakh. The combined business around the two major national festivals has now crossed ₹1 crore, according to the organisation.

So far this year, Tricolours worth around ₹60 lakh have reportedly been sold.

Orders From 18 States

The Gwalior-made flags are now supplied not only within Madhya Pradesh but also to customers and institutions in around 18 states.

The organisation has received approximately 70 to 80 orders ahead of this year's Independence Day. With August 15 approaching, completing the orders on time has become one of the main challenges for the workers.

Officials associated with the organisation said demand has increased compared with last year, with campaigns such as Har Ghar Tiranga also contributing to greater public interest in displaying the national flag.

Women Play Key Role in Production

Women workers at the Gwalior facility are involved in several stages of production, including stitching and preparing the flags.

The Tricolours are folded and handled according to the required procedures before being dispatched to customers and institutions.

For the organisation, the work combines traditional khadi-based production with the demand for a nationally significant product.

A Legacy Linked to Gwalior

The history of the Madhya Bharat Khadi Sangh is closely associated with Gwalior and the wider Swadeshi movement.

Babu Takhtmal Jain, who played an important role in establishing the organisation, was also the first Chief Minister of Madhya Bharat. The institution continued to promote khadi, indigenous production and self-reliance through the decades.

What began with the spinning wheel and the promotion of Swadeshi in 1930 has now evolved into a manufacturing operation whose Tricolours reach government institutions and customers across the country.

As Independence Day approaches, the flags being prepared in Gwalior carry not only the national colours but also a history stretching back nearly a century.

The event was organised as part of the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call to mark Independence Day with displays of the national flag.

350 Boats Carry Tricolour

The Upper Lake presented a striking sight as a large fleet of boats decorated with the Tricolour moved across the water.

Water-sports players who have arrived from different parts of the country, along with athletes from Madhya Pradesh, young people, members of social organisations and local residents, participated in the event.

The boats carrying the national flag became a major attraction for people at the Boat Club, creating a large-scale patriotic display on the lake.

Security Arrangements at Boat Club

Authorities made extensive arrangements for the event, considering the large number of boats and participants.

Police, district administration, the sports department and State Disaster Emergency Response Force (SDERF) teams were deployed at the venue. Divers were also positioned as part of the safety arrangements.

Officials also made arrangements for traffic management, parking and cleanliness around the Boat Club area.

Cabinet Minister Vishwas Kailash Sarang had inspected the Boat Club a day earlier to review preparations for the event.

CRPF Holds Bike Rally in Mandla

In Mandla, personnel of the 148th Battalion of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) organised a Tricolour bike rally on Thursday morning.

The rally passed through major roads of the city, with CRPF personnel carrying the national flag and spreading awareness about the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign.

During the rally, residents were encouraged to hoist the national flag at their homes and participate in Independence Day celebrations.

The initiative also highlighted the role of security forces in connecting patriotic programmes with local communities.

Tricolour Yatra in Harda

A separate Tricolour Yatra was organised by the district administration in Harda.

The procession began from the Middle School Ground and saw participation from Collector Siddharth Jain, Superintendent of Police Shashank and officials and employees from several departments.

Personnel from the police and Home Guards, along with representatives from the health, women and child development, sports and youth welfare and education departments, participated in the procession.

Carrying the national flag, participants conveyed messages of patriotism, national unity and civic responsibility.

Independence Day Celebrations Across MP

The events in Bhopal, Mandla and Harda are part of a wider series of programmes being held across Madhya Pradesh ahead of August 15.

While the Bhopal event used the Upper Lake as the backdrop for a large-scale Tricolour display, the CRPF bike rally in Mandla and the administrative procession in Harda took the campaign onto city streets.

With government departments, security personnel, sportspersons, youths and residents participating, the programmes have added a visible patriotic atmosphere across the three districts in the run-up to Independence Day.

His grandson Ankit brought him to Australia for a two-month tour.

At 80, most people are content with a quiet life. Not Chuhad Singh. The farmer from Batta village in Haryana's Kaithal district has just set a unique record — skydiving from 18,000 feet in Australia, with the tricolour in hand.

The video of his dive has gone viral. In it, he can be seen wearing a white kurta, cheering mid-air as the trainer encourages him. The old man's spirit is unmistakable.

"We are Haryanvis, we are not afraid of anyone. If we were afraid, we wouldn't have come abroad," he says in the video, as the wind howls around him.

This wasn't his first jump. Chuhad Singh had previously skydived from 15,000 feet at Patiala Airfield in Punjab. That experience, his grandson Ankit said, made him want to go higher.

The Dive: 60 Seconds of Freedom

According to Ankit, the jump cost around ₹50,000. But the price tag didn't matter. The pair are in Australia for a two-month tour that began on June 1.

"Fitness is checked by doctors before diving. You can only jump after providing a fitness certificate," Ankit told Bhaskar.

During the jump, Chuhad Singh descended at a speed of 200 kilometres per hour and remained in the air for about 60 seconds. He took selfies with a stick and unfurled the tricolour flag mid-air.

Initially, he was told not to take the flag along. But during the dive, he was requested to carry it — and the trainers eventually agreed.

For 80-year-old Singh, this is a long way from the farm. He spent his entire life farming on his 5 acres of land. His diet has always been traditional — milk, curd, roti, khichdi. Nothing fancy.

But his grandson Ankit, a social media influencer, decided to take him places. "I came to Australia for my grandfather's happiness. Now they are touring abroad just to give him some peace," he said.

Before this, Ankit had taken his grandfather to the UAE and Thailand. There are plans to visit more countries.

Ankit, who is studying BA First Year after completing 12th grade, said the experience was more about the old man's spirit than anything else.

"There was no nervousness on his face. He was completely stress-free during the jump," he said.

Chuhad Singh's dive is being celebrated across social media, with many praising his courage and the grandson's gesture. At an age when many slow down, this Haryana farmer chose to fly.
