Tripura Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankar, a senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the 1994 batch, was found dead at the state police headquarters in Agartala on Monday morning. The sudden death of one of the state's highest-ranking police officials has sent shockwaves through the police fraternity and administrative circles. Authorities have launched a detailed investigation to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.

According to preliminary information released by officials, Anurag Dhankar was found unconscious inside the police headquarters during the morning hours. Colleagues and staff immediately shifted him to Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital in Agartala, where doctors declared him dead upon arrival. His body has been kept at the hospital for post-mortem examination as part of the ongoing investigation.

Police officials stated that initial findings indicate the possibility of suicide. However, investigators have emphasized that the exact cause of death will only be confirmed after the completion of forensic examination, post-mortem reports, and other legal procedures. A forensic team, along with senior police officers, examined the scene where the officer was found, collecting evidence to assist the investigation.

Authorities have not released any official statement regarding the reasons behind the suspected suicide. Investigators are examining all available evidence, including the circumstances leading up to the incident, while maintaining that no conclusions should be drawn until the inquiry is completed.

Anurag Dhankar belonged to the 1994 batch of the Indian Police Service and served in several important positions during his distinguished career. Over the years, he earned a reputation for his administrative experience, leadership, and commitment to public service. His appointment as Tripura's Director General of Police placed him at the helm of the state's law enforcement machinery.

Apart from his responsibilities in Tripura, Dhankar was also associated with several significant investigations during his career. Among the most notable was his involvement in the investigation related to the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, a case that remained one of the country's most closely watched legal and investigative matters. His professional contributions were widely recognized within law enforcement circles.

The news of his death also brought attention to his roots in Uttar Pradesh. Anurag Dhankar hailed from Biharipur village, located around seven kilometers from Baghpat city in Uttar Pradesh. Villagers recalled him as a disciplined and hardworking student who maintained strong academic and sporting interests during his early years.

Residents of Biharipur said Dhankar had last visited his ancestral village nearly twenty-five years ago. His ancestral home still stands in the village, although it has remained locked for many years as no immediate family members currently reside there. Despite his long absence, many villagers continued to remember his achievements with pride.

Dhankar completed his primary education at the village government school before continuing his studies at Sarurpur Inter College, where he completed his higher secondary education. He later graduated from Baraut Degree College before preparing for the Civil Services Examination, eventually joining the prestigious Indian Police Service.

Friends who studied alongside him remembered him as an energetic student with a passion for sports, especially volleyball. According to one of his former classmates, the two studied together until Class 12 and shared many memorable experiences during their school years. After graduation, Dhankar moved to Delhi as he pursued higher aspirations and eventually entered public service through the UPSC examination.

Family members said Anurag Dhankar is survived by his wife, a son, and a daughter. His elder brother retired from the Indian Navy, while his younger brother continues to live in the village and is engaged in agriculture. News of his sudden death deeply affected relatives, friends, former colleagues, and villagers who remembered his journey from a rural background to one of the country's top policing positions.

The police department has expressed grief over the loss of a senior officer who served with dedication throughout his career. Officials from different states have also conveyed condolences, recognizing his contributions to policing and public administration.

Meanwhile, investigators continue to examine all aspects of the case. The forensic team is analyzing evidence collected from the police headquarters, while the post-mortem examination is expected to provide additional clarity regarding the cause of death. Authorities have urged the public to avoid speculation until the official investigation is completed.

The Chhattisgarh Police has carried out a fresh administrative reshuffle, transferring 10 police officers, including seven Inspectors serving as Station House Officers (SHOs) and three Sub-Inspectors, with immediate effect.

The transfer order was issued by Director General of Police (DGP) Arun Dev Gautam from the Police Headquarters in Nava Raipur following the recommendations of the Police Establishment Board. The new postings will remain effective until further orders.

Seven SHOs Among Officers Transferred

According to the official notification, several Inspectors have been assigned new responsibilities across different districts.

Laxman Bhagat has been transferred from Rajnandgaon to Jashpur, while Satish Kumar Sahu has been shifted from Mohla-Manpur-Ambagarh Chowki to Bilaspur.

Similarly, Nasimuddin Khan has been moved from Surajpur to Baloda Bazar-Bhatapara, and Ajay Kumar Sahu has been transferred from Balrampur-Ramanujganj to Bilaspur.

Amit Kumar Beriya has been posted from Dantewada to the Police Headquarters in Nava Raipur, where he will serve in the Administration Academy and Special Unit.

Meanwhile, Prem Prakash Awadhiya has been shifted from Kanker to Raipur Rural, while Sunil Dubey has been transferred from Bijapur to Kanker.

Three Sub-Inspectors Also Shifted

The transfer order also includes changes in the postings of three Sub-Inspectors.

Ganesh Yadav has been transferred from Mohla-Manpur-Ambagarh Chowki to Surguja, Amit Gupta has been moved from Mungeli to Surajpur, and Veena Sahu has been posted from Raigarh to the Police Headquarters in Nava Raipur.

Administrative Reshuffle

Police Headquarters stated that the transfers have been made on administrative grounds to strengthen policing and improve operational efficiency across districts.

All transferred officers have been directed to assume charge at their new postings immediately.

The latest reshuffle is being viewed as part of the state's routine administrative exercise aimed at ensuring effective law enforcement and better management of police establishments across Chhattisgarh.

The Madhya Pradesh Police has introduced a fully digital leave management system, allowing police personnel across the state to apply for and track leave online through the Electronic Human Resource Management System (eHRMS). The new e-Leave module came into effect on July 1 and has been implemented across all 120 police units in the state.

With the rollout of the new system, officers and employees will no longer be required to submit paper applications or visit offices to seek leave approval. Instead, leave requests can now be submitted through the eHRMS portal or the mobile application, with the entire approval process taking place on a single digital platform.

According to the Police Headquarters (PHQ), more than one lakh police personnel have already been onboarded onto the eHRMS platform. The department said the digital initiative is expected to make the leave approval process more transparent, faster and easier while reducing paperwork and administrative delays.

Under the new workflow, employees can submit leave applications using their login credentials on a computer or smartphone. Once the application is filed, it is forwarded digitally by the designated leave clerk to the competent authority for approval. Officers can review, recommend and sanction leave online, while applicants can monitor the real-time status of their requests through their personal dashboards.

Officials said the eHRMS platform already contains employees' service records, including details of leave categories, eligibility and available leave balances based on their respective cadres. This integration is expected to minimize errors and streamline the processing of leave applications.

Before the statewide rollout, the e-Leave module was tested in selected police establishments, including the State Crime Records Bureau (SCRB), Personnel Branch, Special Branch, Superintendent of Police (Rail), Bhopal, and the 25th Battalion in Bhopal. Technical improvements were incorporated based on feedback received during the pilot phase before extending the system to all police units.

The digitisation of service management within the police department began in July 2025, when authorities initiated the process of converting manual service records into digital format. More than one lakh service books have since been scanned and integrated into the system with support from the Madhya Pradesh State Electronics Development Corporation (MPSEDC).

The department has also expanded digital governance beyond leave management. An eHRMS Order Book (O.B.) module has been operational since March 23, 2026, enabling online access to service orders and official records. Officials believe the move will improve record management, ensure better preservation of documents and simplify access to important service-related information.

Senior officials said the transition to digital administration is aimed at improving efficiency and accountability across the police force. The online system is expected to reduce delays in file movement, enhance transparency in approvals and provide employees with quicker access to service-related information without repeated visits to administrative offices.
