The first Mahakal procession of the Bhadau month will be taken out in Ujjain on Monday, August 31, at 4 pm. It will be the fifth procession of Lord Mahakaleshwar during the ongoing season.

After special prayers and rituals at the temple’s Sabha Mandap, Baba Mahakal will be placed in a palanquin and taken through the city. At the main entrance of the temple, an armed police contingent will present a ceremonial salute to the deity.

The procession will include mounted police personnel, armed police forces, Home Guards, bhajan groups, jhanj (cymbal) groups and a police band.

Procession to Reach Ram Ghat

The procession will move from the Mahakal Temple through Mahakal Chauraha, Gudri Chauraha, Bakshi Bazaar and Kahaarwadi before reaching Ram Ghat on the banks of the Shipra River.

At Ram Ghat, Lord Mahakal will be given an abhishek using water from the Shipra, followed by prayers and rituals. The procession will then begin its return journey to the temple.

Return Route

The return procession will follow this route:

Ramanujkot → Modh Ki Dharamshala → Kartik Chowk → Khati Ka Mandir → Satyanarayan Temple → Dhaba Road → Tanki Chauraha → Chhatri Chowk → Gopal Mandir → Patni Bazaar → Gudri Bazaar → Mahakal Temple.

Live Broadcast Arrangements

Devotees who are unable to attend the procession in person will also be able to watch it online. The Mahakaleshwar Temple Management Committee will provide a live broadcast through its official Facebook page.

A mobile chariot equipped with an LED screen will also display the procession towards the end of the event, allowing devotees gathered along the route to watch the proceedings.

The procession is expected to draw devotees along its traditional route as Baba Mahakal makes the first ceremonial city visit of the Bhadau month.

The dispute over the right to conduct the daily Shipra Aarti at Ram Ghat in Ujjain has intensified, with the Panda Committee announcing a Jal Satyagraha in the Shipra River on Saturday evening. The protest comes after police removed priests from the ghat on August 7 when they opposed the Mahakal Temple Committee's attempt to conduct the aarti.

The dispute has been continuing since August 5 and centres on who should have the responsibility of conducting the Shipra Aarti. While the administration wants to develop the ceremony on the lines of the grand Ganga Aarti in Haridwar and Varanasi, the Panda Committee says the move threatens the traditional role of the city's teerth purohits.

Dispute Started on August 5

According to the Panda Committee, priests have been conducting the Shipra Aarti at Ram Ghat every evening at around 6:30 pm for the past 11 years.

The latest dispute began on August 5 when the Mahakal Temple Committee sent a letter to the Mahakal police and local administration seeking security arrangements and other requirements for conducting the aarti. Around 5 pm, members of the temple committee, accompanied by batuks, reached Ram Ghat.

The Panda Committee members reportedly stopped them from conducting the ceremony. Later, the temple committee's batuks performed the aarti at another location on the ghat.

Police Removed Priests

The situation escalated again on August 7 when members of the Panda Committee opposed the Mahakal Temple Committee's batuks conducting the aarti at Ram Ghat.

Police personnel and two SDMs reached the spot and attempted to resolve the dispute. When the standoff continued, police removed the priests from the area and allowed the Mahakal Temple Committee's batuks to conduct the aarti at another location.

The police action has now become a major point of contention, with the Panda Committee deciding to stage a water protest in the Shipra.

'Aarti for 11 Years'

Panda Committee representative Rajesh Trivedi said the city's teerth purohits have been conducting the Shipra Aarti since 2015.

He said the format of the ceremony had already been expanded and improved over the years and argued that handing the responsibility to the Mahakal Temple Committee after 11 years amounted to removing the traditional priests from the event.

The committee has maintained that the priests will continue to conduct the aarti and that they will oppose any attempt by the temple committee to take over the ceremony.

Administration Cites Singhस्थ Preparations

SDM Pawan Baria said the administration's objective is to provide devotees visiting Ujjain during the upcoming Simhastha with an aarti experience comparable to those in Haridwar.

According to the administration, the Mahakal Temple Committee has decided to start the aarti along the Shipra River as part of preparations to improve the overall experience for pilgrims.

Another SDM, LN Garg, said the administration had proposed that priests from the Panda Committee join the temple committee's batuks for the ceremony. However, the proposal was not accepted.

The administration has indicated that the Shipra Aarti will now be conducted daily by the Mahakal Temple Committee.

Smart City Plans Bigger Event

The dispute has also emerged at a time when Ujjain Smart City Limited has floated a tender to develop the Shipra Aarti as a larger cultural and tourism event.

The tender, titled 'Ujjain Mein Maa Shipra Aarti Ka Ayojan', proposes using a private agency for organising, managing, branding and digitally promoting the ceremony.

According to Smart City CEO Sandeep Shiva, the selected agency will conduct daily and special aartis at the Shipra Ghat located behind Unity Mall under a public-private partnership model.

Water Protest Planned

The Panda Committee has announced that its members will conduct the Jal Satyagraha at 4 pm on Saturday to protest the police action and the proposed change in responsibility for the Shipra Aarti.

The continuing standoff has now placed the administration and traditional priests directly opposite each other. With Simhastha preparations gaining momentum, the manner in which the Shipra Aarti is organised is likely to remain a sensitive issue in Ujjain.

The first Shravan procession (Sawari) of Lord Mahakaleshwar will be taken out in Ujjain on Monday evening, marking the beginning of the traditional series of royal processions held during the holy months of Shravan and Bhadrapada. After a special ritual at 4 pm in the Sabha Mandap of the Mahakaleshwar Temple, Lord Mahakal will embark on the ceremonial city tour to symbolically meet devotees and bless the people.

The temple administration has completed preparations for the first procession, while elaborate security and crowd management arrangements have been put in place to accommodate the large number of devotees expected along the route.

First Procession Based on Vedic Theme

According to Mahakaleshwar Temple Management Committee Chairman and Ujjain Collector Roshan Kumar Singh, this year's first procession will be organised around the theme "Vedic Udbodhan".

A special attraction will be the recitation of Vedic mantras by 1,100 Vedic students (Batuks) when the procession reaches the banks of the Shipra River, where traditional worship of Lord Mahakal will be performed before the procession returns to the temple.

Traditional Route Finalised

Following the rituals inside the temple, the procession will move through its traditional route, passing Mahakal Chauraha, Gudri, Bakshi Bazaar and reaching the Shipra River for worship.

On its return journey, the procession will pass through Ramanujkot, Modh Ki Dharamshala, Kartik Chowk, Khati Samaj Temple, Satyanarayan Temple, Dhaba Road, Tanki Chowk, Chhatri Chowk, Gopal Mandir and Patni Bazaar before concluding at the Mahakaleshwar Temple.

Six Processions Planned This Season

The Mahakaleshwar Temple will organise six processions during the Shravan-Bhadrapada period, each highlighting a different cultural or spiritual theme.

The scheduled themes include:

• August 3: Vedic Udbodhan

• August 10: Folk dance performances

• August 17: Police, Army, Home Guard and school band performances

• August 24: Environmental conservation

• August 31: Tableaux depicting the 84 Mahadev shrines

• September 7 (Royal Procession): Simhastha Mahaparva tableau along with flower shower using drones

The Rajsi (Royal) Sawari on September 7 will follow an extended route covering Mirza Naim Beg Marg, Teliwada, Kanthal and Sati Gate before returning to the temple.

1,200 Police Personnel Deployed

Ujjain Superintendent of Police Pradeep Sharma said around 1,200 police personnel have been deployed to ensure smooth conduct of the first Monday of Shravan and the Mahakal procession.

Security arrangements include traffic regulation, crowd management, emergency response teams and surveillance at key locations along the route.

Traditional Procession Order

The procession will begin with official and ceremonial vehicles, followed by mounted police, traditional cannon bearers, police bands, Scout and Guide contingents, devotional groups, tribal dance troupes and the Mahakal Temple Band.

The decorated palanquin (Palki) of Lord Mahakal will form the centrepiece of the procession, followed by ambulances, electricity department vehicles, fire brigade units and police escort vehicles.

The annual Mahakal Sawaris remain one of Ujjain's most significant religious traditions, drawing thousands of devotees from across Madhya Pradesh and other parts of the country during the holy month of Shravan.

Heavy monsoon rains continued to batter several parts of India on Friday, triggering floods, landslides, waterlogging and widespread disruption across northern and western states. Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttarakhand were among the worst-affected as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued fresh alerts for heavy to very heavy rainfall over the coming days.

In Madhya Pradesh, the southwest monsoon has now covered the entire state within nine days. The IMD has forecast 4 to 8 inches of rainfall over the next 24 hours in Dhar, Barwani, Khargone and Dewas districts. In Ujjain, the rising water level of the Shipra (Kshipra) River submerged a temple near the famous Ram Ghat, with visuals showing water inundating the riverside shrine.

Meanwhile, Gujarat witnessed severe waterlogging after intense rainfall. Roads in Valsad district remained submerged, disrupting traffic and leaving several vehicles stranded. In Jamnagar, two children were swept away by strong floodwaters but were rescued safely by local residents before any major tragedy occurred.

In Himachal Pradesh, heavy overnight rain triggered a landslide in the Choling area of Kinnaur district. Massive debris rolled onto the national highway, burying two vehicles. State authorities said at least 49 roads have been closed following multiple rain-related incidents across the hill state, while restoration work is underway.

Heavy rain also affected Uttar Pradesh, where showers lashed Lucknow, Barabanki, Unnao, Jalaun and several neighbouring districts during the early hours of Friday. Water entered residential areas in parts of Unnao, disrupting normal life and causing inconvenience to residents.

In Rajasthan, intermittent rainfall continued for the second consecutive day. The IMD issued a red alert for Kota, Baran and Jhalawar districts, warning of extremely heavy rainfall and the possibility of flooding in low-lying areas.

The situation remained challenging in Uttarakhand, where continuous rainfall triggered landslides in Rudraprayag, Chamoli and nearby districts. Falling rocks and debris blocked stretches of the Badrinath and Kedarnath highways, prompting authorities to temporarily suspend the Kedarnath Yatra as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of pilgrims.

IMD Issues Fresh Rain Alerts

According to the IMD, heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected on July 4 over Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Odisha, Kerala, Goa, Tamil Nadu, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, West Bengal and Sikkim.

Strong winds with speeds of 50–60 kmph are likely over Bihar, while gusty winds are also expected in parts of Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, eastern Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu. Heatwave conditions may continue in isolated areas of eastern Uttar Pradesh despite ongoing monsoon activity.

On July 5, heavy rainfall is likely over Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand and Odisha, with isolated heavy showers expected in Assam, Meghalaya, West Bengal and Sikkim. The weather department has also issued an orange alert for Sikkim, Goa, Telangana and Karnataka.

Monsoon Nears Nationwide Coverage

The southwest monsoon, which reached Kerala on June 4, experienced a temporary slowdown during June due to break monsoon-like conditions. However, favourable weather systems over the Bay of Bengal have accelerated its progress.

According to the IMD, the monsoon is now expected to cover the entire country by July 5, three days ahead of its normal nationwide coverage date of July 8, bringing more widespread rainfall to the remaining parts of northwest India in the coming days.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has directed government officials to use the name "Shipra" instead of "Kshipra" while referring to the state's sacred river in official communication and public records.

The Chief Minister issued the instruction during a government review meeting, stating that the river has historically and culturally been known as "Shipra." He said official usage should reflect the traditional name, which is deeply associated with the state's religious and cultural heritage.

According to officials, the directive is aimed at ensuring uniformity in government documents and preserving the historical identity of one of Madhya Pradesh's most revered rivers. Departments concerned are expected to follow the instruction in future correspondence, publications and official records.

The Shipra River holds immense religious significance, particularly for Ujjain, where it is closely linked to the Simhastha Kumbh Mela. Millions of devotees gather on its banks during the festival to take a holy dip, making the river an integral part of India's spiritual landscape.

The Chief Minister also emphasized the need to preserve the state's cultural heritage through correct terminology and historical references. Officials said the government has been taking several initiatives to promote Madhya Pradesh's religious and cultural identity, with Ujjain remaining a major focus due to its importance in Hindu tradition.

Administrative departments are expected to implement the naming directive in official files, notifications and communications. The move is largely procedural and is intended to standardize the use of the river's name across government offices.

The Shipra River has long been regarded as one of the holiest rivers in central India and plays a central role in religious tourism, pilgrimage and cultural events in Madhya Pradesh. The latest directive is expected to reinforce the government's emphasis on preserving historical nomenclature in official usage.

Further instructions regarding implementation may be issued by the concerned departments in the coming days.
