Indian security agencies carried out a coordinated multi-state crackdown against the Pakistan-based Shahzad Bhatti Network (SBN) on August 12, detaining 253 people across 14 states ahead of Independence Day, according to the government.

The operation was aimed at disrupting alleged plans for subversive activities around August 15. More than 80 FIRs have been registered against the network so far, while more than 200 arrests have been made under various laws, including the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and legislation dealing with arms, narcotics and explosives.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah said the operation had dismantled what the government described as an ISI-backed network and prevented its alleged plans to carry out attacks ahead of Independence Day.

253 Detained Across 14 States

According to the government, the crackdown was conducted jointly with state police forces through a real-time intelligence-sharing mechanism.

Uttar Pradesh recorded the highest number of detentions at 62, followed by Haryana with 52, Delhi with 51 and Punjab with 44.

Rajasthan reported 15 detentions, while Maharashtra recorded eight and Uttarakhand five. Karnataka, Gujarat and Bihar reported three detentions each.

Telangana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Kerala recorded two detentions each.

Fresh FIRs were also registered in Delhi and Karnataka as part of the coordinated action.

IEDs, Grenades Recovered

Security agencies also recovered weapons and surveillance equipment during the operations, according to the government.

The seized material included improvised explosive devices (IEDs), grenades bearing Pakistan Ordnance Factory markings, pistols and live ammunition.

Investigators also recovered CCTV cameras that the government said were allegedly being used for surveillance and espionage.

Amit Shah said the recoveries pointed towards alleged links between the network and Pakistan. The government has described SBN as a Pakistan-based terror syndicate allegedly involved in grenade, IED and petrol-bomb attacks as well as targeted killings in India.

Local Operatives Under Scanner

According to the government, the network allegedly relied on local conduits to conduct reconnaissance missions.

These operatives were allegedly tasked with monitoring police installations, defence establishments and religious sites. Authorities also alleged that members of the network paid local contacts to install CCTV cameras and gather information about potential targets.

The alleged use of local operatives is now a key focus of the investigation as agencies work to identify the wider network and determine the extent of its activities across different states.

Crackdown Ahead of August 15

The operation was launched days before Independence Day, when security agencies traditionally maintain heightened vigilance because of the potential for attacks or other disruptive activities.

The government said the August 12 action was specifically intended to disrupt activities allegedly planned around August 15.

The multi-state operation involved coordination between central security agencies and state police units, allowing authorities to act simultaneously against suspected members and associates of the network.

Government Signals Zero Tolerance

Amit Shah described the coordinated action as an example of the government's policy of “zero tolerance” towards cross-border terrorism.

The government said security agencies would continue intelligence-led operations to identify and dismantle remaining networks allegedly linked to SBN.

The crackdown also comes amid continued concerns among Indian security agencies about Pakistan-based organisations allegedly using local networks and sleeper operatives for surveillance, recruitment and attacks inside India.

Investigation Continues

With more than 80 FIRs registered and over 200 arrests made, investigators are expected to examine the alleged operational structure of the network, its local contacts and its sources of weapons and explosives.

The recovery of IEDs, grenades, firearms and surveillance equipment is likely to remain a central part of the investigation.

Authorities have said the coordinated action prevented alleged plans linked to the Independence Day period, while further operations are expected as agencies attempt to identify additional individuals connected with the network.

The government has maintained that dismantling such cross-border networks remains a key component of its broader counter-terrorism strategy.

The Har Ghar Tiranga campaign in Madhya Pradesh, which began on August 9, will conclude today, August 17, after a week of patriotic activities, Tiranga Yatras and public participation across the state. Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav had urged citizens to actively participate in the campaign by displaying the national flag at their homes and taking part in events organised across Madhya Pradesh.

The campaign was organised around Independence Day with the objective of encouraging people to connect with the Tricolour and strengthen the message of national unity and pride. Across the state, government departments, local administrations, youth groups and citizens participated in rallies and other programmes.

Campaign Launched From Bhopal

The Madhya Pradesh government formally launched the campaign on August 9 in Bhopal. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav inaugurated the initiative and participated in a Tiranga Yatra that began from the TT Nagar Stadium.

Yadav also joined the rally on a motorcycle carrying the national flag, while a large number of citizens and young people participated in the event. The campaign was scheduled to run across Madhya Pradesh from August 9 to August 17.

Tiranga Yatras Across The State

The campaign featured Tiranga Yatras in different parts of Madhya Pradesh. The state government encouraged people to display the Tricolour at their homes and participate in community-level activities.

In Bhopal, several programmes were organised during the campaign. A large Tiranga Yatra involving young people and citizens was also held as part of the Independence Day celebrations.

The Chief Minister said the enthusiasm of young participants reflected their patriotic spirit and appealed to citizens to hoist the Tricolour at their homes while respecting the national flag.

Youth Participation Remains Key Focus

Youth participation has been one of the prominent features of the campaign. Speaking during a Tiranga Yatra in Bhopal, Yadav highlighted the participation of thousands of young people and described their involvement as a sign of their commitment towards the country's progress.

The campaign has also sought to take patriotic activities beyond government programmes by encouraging families and communities to participate directly.

Tiranga At Every Home

The central message of the campaign has been the display of the national flag at homes. Citizens have been encouraged to hoist the Tricolour as a symbol of national pride and remember the sacrifices made during India's freedom struggle.

The wider Har Ghar Tiranga 2026 initiative has also encouraged citizens to participate digitally by registering their involvement, uploading photographs with the Tricolour and obtaining a participation certificate.

Flag Respect And Proper Display

As citizens participate in the campaign, authorities have also emphasised the importance of respecting the national flag and following the prescribed rules for its display.

Citizens are expected to ensure that the Tricolour is not allowed to touch the ground and is handled respectfully. The Flag Code of India provides guidelines concerning the display, handling and disposal of the national flag.

Campaign Ends Today

With August 17 marking the final scheduled day of the Madhya Pradesh campaign, the state-wide initiative is now drawing to a close. The government has sought to use the campaign not only as an Independence Day activity but also as a means of encouraging continued public engagement with the values associated with the national flag.

The campaign's activities over the past week have included Tiranga Yatras and other public programmes, with Bhopal serving as one of the major centres of participation.

As the campaign concludes, the message from the state government remains centred on national unity, respect for the Tricolour and citizen participation.

Abhijeet Dipke, founder of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to use his Independence Day address to directly address concerns among India's youth, particularly on education, unemployment and rising inflation.

In a post on X on Friday, Dipke called on the Prime Minister to outline the government's plans and measures aimed at addressing issues affecting young people.

"We request the Prime Minister to explain what steps the government is taking for the youth on issues of education, unemployment and rising inflation," Dipke said in the post.

He also shared a link to an online petition and appealed to people who supported the campaign to sign it.

According to the information shared by the party, the petition had received more than 32,000 signatures by 4 am on Saturday. The link directs users to the CJP website, where they can participate in the campaign.

Focus on Youth Issues

Dipke's appeal comes ahead of Independence Day on August 15, when the Prime Minister traditionally addresses the nation from the Red Fort in New Delhi.

The CJP founder has sought a specific focus on issues that directly affect young Indians, including employment opportunities, access to education and the rising cost of living.

The party has increasingly positioned youth-related concerns at the centre of its political activities.

‘Kya Bolti Public’ Campaign

CJP has also announced plans to launch a nationwide public outreach campaign called 'Kya Bolti Public' from September.

Dipke announced the campaign during a media interaction in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra, on Thursday.

Under the campaign, party representatives plan to travel to villages and cities and interact with young people to understand their concerns.

According to Dipke, unemployment and expensive education will be among the major issues highlighted during the outreach programme.

The campaign is expected to provide the party with an opportunity to engage directly with voters and gather public feedback on issues affecting different communities.

Protest Over NEET Issue

CJP has also been active in protests concerning the NEET-UG examination controversy.

Dipke and members of the party staged a protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi for 36 consecutive days, from June 20 to July 25.

The protest focused on allegations surrounding irregularities and the NEET examination system.

The party announced the conclusion of its protest on July 25 following the resignation of then Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

CJP had demanded greater accountability and reforms in the examination system, particularly over concerns affecting medical aspirants.

Party Expands Organisation

The CJP also announced the formation of its National Working Committee on Thursday.

The party said it plans to establish state coordination committees along with Lok Sabha-level and city-level organisational units across the country over the next six months.

The move is part of an effort to expand the party's organisational presence beyond its existing base.

Political Outreach Ahead

The combination of the Independence Day appeal, the petition campaign and the planned 'Kya Bolti Public' programme indicates that youth concerns are likely to remain central to CJP's political messaging.

By focusing on employment, education costs and inflation, the party is seeking to connect its campaign with issues that affect a large section of India's younger population.

However, the petition and campaign represent the political position of CJP and Dipke and do not constitute government policy announcements.

With the Independence Day address approaching, Dipke's appeal places the focus on whether the Prime Minister will specifically address employment and education concerns in his national message.

Amit Kumar, a resident of Bapu Nagar in Ranjhi, will attend the Independence Day programme in New Delhi on August 15, where he will be felicitated by the President. He has also been invited to join the President for a special luncheon following the ceremony.

Selected from Across the Country

Amit's selection comes under the Ministry of Labour and Employment's Atal Pension Yojana, a government-backed social security scheme that encourages long-term retirement savings through regular monthly contributions.

According to officials, he is among only 10 individuals chosen from across India for consistently depositing his monthly premium without any default since enrolling in the scheme in 2018.

Under the pension scheme, Amit contributes ₹130 every month and will receive a monthly pension of ₹3,000 after attaining the age of 60.

Rashtrapati Bhavan Invitation Delivered

The official invitation reached Amit's residence on Friday through the Department of Posts.

Officials from the Khamaria Post Office first contacted him to verify his address before senior postal officers and a postman personally delivered the invitation from Rashtrapati Bhavan.

The invitation package also includes air travel to and from New Delhi, accommodation, entry passes to Rashtrapati Bhavan, and a commemorative gift provided by the Government of India.

'It Feels Like a Dream'

Reacting to the honour, Amit said he initially found it difficult to believe that he had been selected.

"I belong to a middle-class family. I never imagined I would get an opportunity to meet the President of India and be honoured by her. Being selected from among millions of beneficiaries is a matter of great pride and fortune," he said.

He also expressed gratitude to the Government of India and the Labour Department for recognising his commitment to the pension scheme.

Celebration in Family and Neighbourhood

News of Amit's selection quickly spread through his neighbourhood, with family members, relatives and local residents congratulating him on the achievement.

Residents described the recognition as a proud moment not only for Amit but also for Jabalpur, saying his selection highlights the importance of financial discipline and long-term social security planning through government welfare schemes.

School Holidays in August 2026: 12 Days Off Including Independence Day, Raksha Bandhan and Eid-e-Milad

August brings one of the more holiday-packed months of the school calendar, with Independence Day, Raksha Bandhan and Eid-e-Milad all falling within a few weeks of each other. Combined with regular weekend closures, schools are expected to remain shut for around 12 days this month — though the exact count and specific dates will vary depending on your state.

Independence Day — August 15 (Saturday)
India's 80th Independence Day falls on a Saturday this year. Schools nationwide will mark the occasion with flag hoisting ceremonies before the day rolls into the weekend, effectively extending the break for most students.

Eid-e-Milad / Milad-un-Nabi — August 25-26
Marking the birth anniversary of Prophet Muhammad, this holiday's exact date varies slightly by state and moon-sighting, falling around August 25 or 26 depending on regional notification. Schools in states with significant Muslim populations typically observe this as a full holiday.

Onam — August 26
A major harvest festival celebrated predominantly in Kerala, marked by the Pookalam flower arrangements, Vallam Kali snake boat races and the traditional Onam Sadya feast. Schools across Kerala remain closed, often as part of a longer multi-day Onam vacation.

Raksha Bandhan — August 28 (Friday)
Falling on a Friday this year, Raksha Bandhan creates a natural three-day weekend for most schools, running straight through to Sunday without requiring any extra leave.

Regional and restricted holidays
A few other observances fall within the month depending on location — Friendship Day is a school holiday in Karnataka, Parsi New Year is observed as a restricted holiday in Maharashtra and Gujarat, and Nag Panchami falls on August 17 as a restricted holiday in several states. Restricted holidays are typically optional, chosen by individual employees or, in some school systems, adjusted at the institution's discretion rather than being mandatory closures.

Why the total varies by state
Because several of these — Eid-e-Milad's exact date, Onam, restricted holidays — depend on regional practice, lunar calendar variations or state-specific notifications, the total holiday count for August can differ from one state to another even though the core national holidays (Independence Day, Raksha Bandhan) stay fixed everywhere.

What parents and students should do
Given the mix of fixed national holidays and state-specific observances, checking your child's school or state education department's official calendar remains the most reliable way to confirm exact dates — especially for Eid-e-Milad, where the specific day can shift based on official moon-sighting announcements closer to the date.

Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren Orders Push for 25,000 Government Jobs by Independence Day

Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren has directed the state's recruitment machinery to move faster, setting an ambitious target of nearly 25,000 government appointments by August 15.

The directive covers recruitment across both the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and the Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC), which have been told to complete pending examinations and selection processes without further delay. For posts that have already been advertised, the government has ordered the recruitment process to be expedited, while fresh requisitions coming in from various departments are to be processed immediately rather than added to a backlog.

The bulk of the expected appointments are likely to come from a handful of sectors. Assistant teacher positions in government schools are expected to make up a significant share, alongside recruitment of doctors, nurses and other medical staff for the Health Department. Engineers and technical personnel for road, bridge and broader infrastructure projects are also part of the planned intake.

Finance Minister Radhakrishna Kishore, addressing the government's reasoning behind the push, said filling vacant positions across state departments was a priority, pointing to persistent manpower shortages that have affected service delivery. If the timeline holds, close to 25,000 appointment letters or selection announcements could be issued around Independence Day — a date that would give the government a symbolic milestone alongside the practical staffing benefit.

Whether the JPSC and JSSC can actually clear the required examinations and selection rounds within the roughly month-long window remains the open question. Government recruitment drives in Jharkhand, as in most states, have historically faced delays tied to exam scheduling, verification processes and occasional legal challenges — and the compressed timeline here leaves little room for those kinds of holdups if the August 15 target is to be met.

Neither the JPSC nor the JSSC has released a full breakdown yet of exactly which posts will be prioritised or a department-wise count of the roughly 25,000 positions. Further details on the specific recruitment drives covered under this push are expected as the commissions begin acting on the CM's directive.

In a message posted on social media platform X, Modi said the relationship between India and the United States goes far beyond strategic cooperation and is built on the foundations of democracy, the rule of law and faith in the potential of their people.

“On behalf of 1.4 billion Indians, I extend heartfelt congratulations to President Trump and the people of the United States on this historic 250th anniversary of your Independence,” the Prime Minister wrote.

Highlighting the depth of bilateral ties, Modi said the two nations share a unique bond that has evolved into a force for global welfare. He noted that both countries continue to strengthen cooperation across a wide range of sectors, including trade, technology, defence, education, innovation and people-to-people exchanges.

The Prime Minister expressed confidence that the coming years would bring greater prosperity, peace and progress to the United States while further deepening the partnership between New Delhi and Washington.

“Our shared belief in democracy, the rule of law and the limitless potential of our people makes our friendship a force for global good,” Modi said, adding that he looked forward to seeing India-US relations reach new heights in the years ahead.

The message drew a response from US Ambassador Sergio Gor, who thanked the Prime Minister for his wishes. Sharing Modi’s post on X, Gor wrote a brief message expressing appreciation for the greetings extended by India on the landmark occasion.

Meanwhile, the US Embassy in New Delhi marked the celebrations by releasing a special video commemorating the 250th anniversary of American independence. The video featured highlights from the recent meeting between President Trump and Prime Minister Modi on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in France.

The tribute also included messages from prominent Indian personalities, among them former NASA astronaut Sunita Williams and Academy Award-winning composer A.R. Rahman, who joined in congratulating the United States on the milestone.

The United States celebrated its 250th Independence Day on July 4, marking two and a half centuries since the adoption of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. The anniversary has been observed through a series of commemorative events across the country and abroad.

India has also participated in the celebrations through a significant maritime outreach initiative. The Indian Navy deployed INS Sudarshini to take part in events associated with the anniversary year. According to the Navy, the vessel is currently undertaking the Lokayan-26 voyage, aimed at showcasing India’s maritime heritage and strengthening international goodwill and cooperation.

The Ministry of Defence said INS Sudarshini recently arrived at the Port of Baltimore after sailing from Norfolk, Virginia, through the historic Chesapeake and Delaware Canal. Earlier, the ship participated in the Sail 250 Virginia celebrations from June 19 to June 23, representing India alongside traditional sailing vessels from several countries.

The deployment of INS Sudarshini reflects India’s growing maritime engagement with partner nations and underscores the broader strategic relationship between India and the United States. As both democracies continue to expand cooperation in key sectors ranging from defence and technology to trade and education, the exchange of messages on the occasion of America’s 250th Independence Day highlighted the enduring strength of one of the world’s most significant bilateral partnerships.

Speaking at the "Salute to America" event on the National Mall in Washington, Trump addressed thousands of attendees despite severe weather that had temporarily disrupted the programme earlier in the day. Thunderstorms and lightning forced officials to evacuate parts of the venue before the ceremony resumed later in the evening.

Opening his nearly 40-minute speech, Trump thanked the crowd for returning after the weather interruption, saying the celebration would continue "rain or shine."

"I want to thank everybody because they did the right thing," Trump said, adding that the difficult weather had made the occasion even more memorable.

Throughout the address, Trump repeatedly praised American history, democracy and constitutional freedoms, describing the country's 250-year journey as a story of resilience and achievement.

A major theme of the speech was his criticism of communism. Trump argued that communist ideology was fundamentally incompatible with American values and warned against what he described as efforts to reshape the nation's historical narrative.

"You can be a communist, or you can be a patriot. You cannot be both," Trump said, while accusing supporters of Marxist ideas of undermining America's heritage and future.

He further described communism as "a cancer" that should be stopped before it spreads, asserting that the ideology had consistently failed wherever it had been implemented.

Trump contrasted what he called America's constitutional freedoms—including freedom of speech, freedom of religion and equal justice under the law—with authoritarian political systems, saying these principles remain central to the country's identity.

The President also used the occasion to promote his domestic political agenda. Referring to election reforms, he reiterated support for legislation requiring proof of citizenship for voting and stricter rules governing mail-in ballots. Trump argued that such measures would strengthen election integrity.

On foreign policy, Trump briefly highlighted recent US actions overseas, mentioning operations involving Venezuela and military strikes targeting Iranian naval assets as examples of his administration's approach to national security.

Military service and American history featured prominently throughout the celebration. Trump honoured veterans from World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War, recognising their contributions before a cheering audience.

Several historic American flags were displayed during the event, including flags associated with the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, Theodore Roosevelt's military service and the USS Arizona, which was sunk during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941.

Calling them "the real deal," Trump said the historic flags symbolised the courage and determination that shaped the United States.

The event also highlighted America's achievements in space exploration. Members of the Artemis II mission, which recently completed a lunar flyby, appeared alongside former Apollo 17 astronaut Harrison "Jack" Schmitt, the last surviving astronaut to have walked on the Moon.

As the ceremony concluded, Trump declared that America was entering what he described as a new "golden age," expressing confidence about the country's future.

The Independence Day celebrations ended with an elaborate fireworks display over the National Mall, accompanied by music and patriotic performances. Despite the earlier thunderstorms, large crowds remained until the conclusion of the event, marking one of the centrepiece celebrations of America's 250th anniversary.

The address reflected themes that have remained central to Trump's political messaging, combining patriotic symbolism, tributes to military service, criticism of ideological opponents and calls for preserving what he described as traditional American values.

As the United States celebrates the 250th anniversary of its independence, the country is undertaking one of its most ambitious historical preservation projects—a specially engineered time capsule designed to remain sealed for the next 250 years.

The 408-kilogram capsule will be buried on July 4 at Independence National Historical Park in Philadelphia, the city where the Declaration of Independence was adopted in 1776. Scheduled to be opened in 2276, the capsule aims to provide future generations with an authentic glimpse into American life, technology, culture and society as it existed in 2026.

The project has been officially documented by the National Park Service, ensuring that its exact location and intended opening date are preserved for centuries to come.

Why Philadelphia Was Chosen

Philadelphia holds a unique place in American history as the birthplace of the nation's independence.

It was here on July 4, 1776, that the Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence, laying the foundation for the United States. Choosing Philadelphia for the burial of the time capsule symbolically connects America's past with its future as the nation commemorates its 250-year milestone.

A Snapshot of America in 2026

The capsule contains carefully selected objects representing all 50 US states, capturing different aspects of modern American life.

Among the most unusual items included are a whale bone, sand collected from the world's largest gypsum desert, fabric linked to the Wright brothers' pioneering aircraft, historical documents, cultural artefacts and written predictions generated using artificial intelligence about what the future might look like.

The collection is intended to preserve not only physical objects but also the ideas, scientific achievements and technological advancements that define contemporary America.

Built to Survive for Two and a Half Centuries

Designing a container capable of surviving underground for 250 years required advanced engineering.

The capsule has been constructed using precision-milled stainless steel, a material chosen for its exceptional resistance to corrosion and environmental damage. Engineers opted for a cylindrical shape because it distributes pressure more evenly and reduces the risk of structural failure or water leakage compared to square containers.

To create an airtight seal, the capsule has been closed using indium, a soft metal capable of filling microscopic gaps that ordinary seals might leave behind.

Scientists have also maintained an internal humidity level of approximately 35 percent, considered ideal for preserving delicate materials such as paper, textiles and historical documents over extended periods.

Double Protection Underground

The capsule will be buried nearly 10 feet below the surface, where underground temperatures remain relatively stable throughout the year.

To provide additional protection, it will be enclosed inside a second steel cylinder, creating an insulating air gap that helps guard against groundwater intrusion and flooding.

Project lead scientist Michael Berilla explained that if floodwaters ever reached the capsule itself, it would likely indicate that much of Philadelphia had already been submerged, reflecting an extreme environmental event rather than a failure of the capsule's design.

More Than a Museum Exhibit

Unlike museum collections, which may be relocated, restored or reorganised over time, a time capsule remains untouched until its predetermined opening date.

Organisers say the project is intended to leave an unaltered message for people living in 2276, allowing them to experience an authentic record of the nation's everyday life, technological progress and cultural identity exactly as it existed during America's 250th year of independence.

Part of a Long Tradition

The United States has a rich history of creating long-term time capsules.

Among the most famous is the Crypt of Civilization at Oglethorpe University in Georgia, which is scheduled to remain sealed until the year 8113. Another well-known example is the Westinghouse Time Capsule, buried at the 1939 New York World's Fair and intended to be opened in 6939.

India also experimented with a similar project when the Kalpatra time capsule was buried near Delhi's Red Fort in 1973 during Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's tenure. However, it was excavated just four years later following a change in government amid political controversy over its contents.

As America marks a historic milestone, the Philadelphia time capsule serves not only as a celebration of the nation's past but also as a message of curiosity, innovation and hope for generations that will inherit its future two and a half centuries from now.
