Indian security agencies carried out a coordinated multi-state crackdown against the Pakistan-based Shahzad Bhatti Network (SBN) on August 12, detaining 253 people across 14 states ahead of Independence Day, according to the government.

The operation was aimed at disrupting alleged plans for subversive activities around August 15. More than 80 FIRs have been registered against the network so far, while more than 200 arrests have been made under various laws, including the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and legislation dealing with arms, narcotics and explosives.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah said the operation had dismantled what the government described as an ISI-backed network and prevented its alleged plans to carry out attacks ahead of Independence Day.

253 Detained Across 14 States

According to the government, the crackdown was conducted jointly with state police forces through a real-time intelligence-sharing mechanism.

Uttar Pradesh recorded the highest number of detentions at 62, followed by Haryana with 52, Delhi with 51 and Punjab with 44.

Rajasthan reported 15 detentions, while Maharashtra recorded eight and Uttarakhand five. Karnataka, Gujarat and Bihar reported three detentions each.

Telangana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Kerala recorded two detentions each.

Fresh FIRs were also registered in Delhi and Karnataka as part of the coordinated action.

IEDs, Grenades Recovered

Security agencies also recovered weapons and surveillance equipment during the operations, according to the government.

The seized material included improvised explosive devices (IEDs), grenades bearing Pakistan Ordnance Factory markings, pistols and live ammunition.

Investigators also recovered CCTV cameras that the government said were allegedly being used for surveillance and espionage.

Amit Shah said the recoveries pointed towards alleged links between the network and Pakistan. The government has described SBN as a Pakistan-based terror syndicate allegedly involved in grenade, IED and petrol-bomb attacks as well as targeted killings in India.

Local Operatives Under Scanner

According to the government, the network allegedly relied on local conduits to conduct reconnaissance missions.

These operatives were allegedly tasked with monitoring police installations, defence establishments and religious sites. Authorities also alleged that members of the network paid local contacts to install CCTV cameras and gather information about potential targets.

The alleged use of local operatives is now a key focus of the investigation as agencies work to identify the wider network and determine the extent of its activities across different states.

Crackdown Ahead of August 15

The operation was launched days before Independence Day, when security agencies traditionally maintain heightened vigilance because of the potential for attacks or other disruptive activities.

The government said the August 12 action was specifically intended to disrupt activities allegedly planned around August 15.

The multi-state operation involved coordination between central security agencies and state police units, allowing authorities to act simultaneously against suspected members and associates of the network.

Government Signals Zero Tolerance

Amit Shah described the coordinated action as an example of the government's policy of “zero tolerance” towards cross-border terrorism.

The government said security agencies would continue intelligence-led operations to identify and dismantle remaining networks allegedly linked to SBN.

The crackdown also comes amid continued concerns among Indian security agencies about Pakistan-based organisations allegedly using local networks and sleeper operatives for surveillance, recruitment and attacks inside India.

Investigation Continues

With more than 80 FIRs registered and over 200 arrests made, investigators are expected to examine the alleged operational structure of the network, its local contacts and its sources of weapons and explosives.

The recovery of IEDs, grenades, firearms and surveillance equipment is likely to remain a central part of the investigation.

Authorities have said the coordinated action prevented alleged plans linked to the Independence Day period, while further operations are expected as agencies attempt to identify additional individuals connected with the network.

The government has maintained that dismantling such cross-border networks remains a key component of its broader counter-terrorism strategy.

The Har Ghar Tiranga campaign in Madhya Pradesh, which began on August 9, will conclude today, August 17, after a week of patriotic activities, Tiranga Yatras and public participation across the state. Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav had urged citizens to actively participate in the campaign by displaying the national flag at their homes and taking part in events organised across Madhya Pradesh. 

The campaign was organised around Independence Day with the objective of encouraging people to connect with the Tricolour and strengthen the message of national unity and pride. Across the state, government departments, local administrations, youth groups and citizens participated in rallies and other programmes.

Campaign Launched From Bhopal

The Madhya Pradesh government formally launched the campaign on August 9 in Bhopal. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav inaugurated the initiative and participated in a Tiranga Yatra that began from the TT Nagar Stadium.

Yadav also joined the rally on a motorcycle carrying the national flag, while a large number of citizens and young people participated in the event. The campaign was scheduled to run across Madhya Pradesh from August 9 to August 17. 

Tiranga Yatras Across The State

The campaign featured Tiranga Yatras in different parts of Madhya Pradesh. The state government encouraged people to display the Tricolour at their homes and participate in community-level activities.

In Bhopal, several programmes were organised during the campaign. A large Tiranga Yatra involving young people and citizens was also held as part of the Independence Day celebrations.

The Chief Minister said the enthusiasm of young participants reflected their patriotic spirit and appealed to citizens to hoist the Tricolour at their homes while respecting the national flag.

Youth participation has been one of the prominent features of the campaign. Speaking during a Tiranga Yatra in Bhopal, Yadav highlighted the participation of thousands of young people and described their involvement as a sign of their commitment towards the country's progress.

The central message of the campaign has been the display of the national flag at homes. Citizens have been encouraged to hoist the Tricolour as a symbol of national pride and remember the sacrifices made during India's freedom struggle.

The wider Har Ghar Tiranga 2026 initiative has also encouraged citizens to participate digitally by registering their involvement, uploading photographs with the Tricolour and obtaining a participation certificate.

Abhijeet Dipke, founder of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to use his Independence Day address to directly address concerns among India's youth, particularly on education, unemployment and rising inflation.

In a post on X on Friday, Dipke called on the Prime Minister to outline the government's plans and measures aimed at addressing issues affecting young people.

"We request the Prime Minister to explain what steps the government is taking for the youth on issues of education, unemployment and rising inflation," Dipke said in the post.

He also shared a link to an online petition and appealed to people who supported the campaign to sign it.

According to the information shared by the party, the petition had received more than 32,000 signatures by 4 am on Saturday. The link directs users to the CJP website, where they can participate in the campaign.

Focus on Youth Issues

Dipke's appeal comes ahead of Independence Day on August 15, when the Prime Minister traditionally addresses the nation from the Red Fort in New Delhi.

According to officials, he is among only 10 individuals chosen from across India for consistently depositing his monthly premium without any default since enrolling in the scheme in 2018.

Under the pension scheme, Amit contributes ₹130 every month and will receive a monthly pension of ₹3,000 after attaining the age of 60.

The official invitation reached Amit's residence on Friday through the Department of Posts.

Officials from the Khamaria Post Office first contacted him to verify his address before senior postal officers and a postman personally delivered the invitation from Rashtrapati Bhavan.

The invitation package also includes air travel to and from New Delhi, accommodation, entry passes to Rashtrapati Bhavan, and a commemorative gift provided by the Government of India.

Reacting to the honour, Amit said he initially found it difficult to believe that he had been selected.

Built to Survive for Two and a Half Centuries

Designing a container capable of surviving underground for 250 years required advanced engineering.

The capsule has been constructed using precision-milled stainless steel, a material chosen for its exceptional resistance to corrosion and environmental damage. Engineers opted for a cylindrical shape because it distributes pressure more evenly and reduces the risk of structural failure or water leakage compared to square containers.

To create an airtight seal, the capsule has been closed using indium, a soft metal capable of filling microscopic gaps that ordinary seals might leave behind.

Project lead scientist Michael Berilla explained that if floodwaters ever reached the capsule itself, it would likely indicate that much of Philadelphia had already been submerged, reflecting an extreme environmental event rather than a failure of the capsule's design.

More Than a Museum Exhibit

Unlike museum collections, which may be relocated, restored or reorganised over time, a time capsule remains untouched until its predetermined opening date.

Organisers say the project is intended to leave an unaltered message for people living in 2276, allowing them to experience an authentic record of the nation's everyday life, technological progress and cultural identity exactly as it existed during America's 250th year of independence.

Part of a Long Tradition

The United States has a rich history of creating long-term time capsules.

Among the most famous is the Crypt of Civilization at Oglethorpe University in Georgia, which is scheduled to remain sealed until the year 8113. Another well-known example is the Westinghouse Time Capsule, buried at the 1939 New York World's Fair and intended to be opened in 6939.

India also experimented with a similar project when the Kalpatra time capsule was buried near Delhi's Red Fort in 1973 during Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's tenure. However, it was excavated just four years later following a change in government amid political controversy over its contents.

As America marks a historic milestone, the Philadelphia time capsule serves not only as a celebration of the nation's past but also as a message of curiosity, innovation and hope for generations that will inherit its future two and a half centuries from now.
